Default LSU T La'el Collins Bad Timing

Police are requesting to speak with LSU offensive tackle La'el Collins after the shooting death of a pregnant woman last week, who is believed to be his former girlfriend, according to Baton Rouge police Lt. Jonny Dunnam. Collins is not considered a suspect, but police want to see if he can add any information to the case for background.

Collins' attorney, Jim Boren, told police he is currently in Chicago preparing for the NFL Draft on Thursday, but he has been in contact with the lead detective on the case. Boren said he retained the services of a private investigative firm to help prove Collins was not in area during the incident, according to ESPN.

"We took the investigation seriously," Boren said from his offices Tuesday. "We've tried to rule him out as a suspect. We're going to provide that information to the police, and ultimately (Collins) will sit down and talk to them. But the timing is poor.

"We have identified where La'el was the day the lady was murdered to establish he was nowhere around," Boren told ESPN. "We have offered to give names, witnesses who can vouch for his whereabouts that day until after the woman's body was discovered. We believe that when [police] have verified that information, that they will rule him out as a suspect in the homicide, just as I believe he should be."

Collins is projected as the third best tackle prospect in the upcoming NFL Draft. Senior NFL Columnist Pete Prisco has the Giants taking him at No. 9 overall and Senior NFL Draft Analyst Rob Rang has the Rams taking him at No. 10 overall in their latest mock drafts.

After what dorsey said today I doubt were gonna be a player for Collins but looks like he might play for someone this year

Former LSU football standout La’el Collins met with Baton Rouge homicide detectives Monday morning, and he was scheduled to meet with officials from two NFL teams over the next 24 hours.
Collins’ meeting with police capped a week of speculation about when he would answer questions as part of an investigation into the killing of a 29-year-old woman and her baby. Police said Collins “fully cooperated with investigators and is still not considered a suspect” in the April 24 slaying of Brittney Mills and her son Brenton, who was successfully delivered after the shooting but died a week later.

Collins, now an undrafted free agent, had meetings scheduled with officials from the Buffalo Bills and Miami Dolphins for Monday night and Tuesday morning, a source close to Collins told The Advocate. Collins has received interest from “almost every” NFL team over the past few days and will likely meet with several teams over the next few days, the source said.
News broke about detectives’ desires to meet with Collins early last week, two days before the offensive lineman was projected to be taken in the first round of the NFL draft. Even though Collins, 21, was identified merely as one of many people investigators wanted to speak with regarding Mills’ death, Collins’ draft stock plummeted. In the end, following a failed attempt by Collins’ agent to pull the lineman from this year’s draft, he was not picked.
Cpl. Don Coppola Jr., a Baton Rouge police spokesman, said detectives reached out to Collins’ family and his agent the day after Mills — described as an associate of Collins — was fatally shot. It wasn’t until last Tuesday when multiple media outlets posed questions about how Collins was connected to a murder investigation, that police said he was wanted for questioning.
“We were strictly responding to media requests,” Coppola said, describing why police said detectives wanted to interview Collins even though he was not a suspect or person of interest in Mills’ death.

Collins’ attorney, Jim Boren, said last week Collins hired a private investigator to prove the player was out of town April 24 and therefore could not have shot Brittney Mills.
Police said Monday they would not comment about Collins’ whereabouts on the day Mills was shot.
After the Monday morning meeting with police at the multi-jurisdictional Violent Crimes Unit inside State Police’s headquarters, Boren said his client answered all questions posed by homicide detectives.
“In my mind, he’s been cleared from the beginning,” Boren said.

We should have taken the risk and drafted him.

Yes we should have taken him in the 7th round. Your odds are better of him being innocent than finding another starter in tue uth round.

I almost think the NFL probably reached out to all NFL teams and basically, excuse the term Balck Balled him saying there would be consequences if you draft this guy. I can't believe no team took a chance on him with even a 7th rounder.

You know in the end, this may be better for him and he needs to take that approach. Sign a two year deal, go prove yourself to be the first round talent he believes he is, and then get that second contract that will make up for what he missed with the TEAM of his choice, while other in his draft class are still obligated to their slotted contracts with teams that they had no real say in playing for. If he proves himself a starter, he could end up making more over the life of his career than he would if he was drafted in the 2nd or 3rd round.

Seek....I believe you are ENTIRELY CORRECT! If he turns out to be innocent of any wrongdoing and if he turns out to actually be a 1st round type talent he will make at least as much $$$ as he would have if he had been drafted and he'll have the added benefit of getting to pretty much choose what team he wants to play for. And if he is smart, the team he will choose will be the CHIEFS! Reid-Dorsey are building a POWERHOUSE that people now WANT TO PLAY FOR!

Crap. They already had a decent O-Line with 3 first-round picks playing there. Now they add another 1st round talent to the mix. Small wonder that they didn't panic about picking up a RB. Any RB will be able to run behind their O-Line.

Collins is really thought he would not get a deal this year. But seems like he did.
    Happy Halloween 2021
