The Chiefs open their season up against the San Diego Chargers at Arrowhead Stadium

By now, the story of 2015 has been well told. After a 1-5 record to begin the season, the Kansas City Chiefs woke up.

They rattled off 10 wins in a row, clinched a playoff berth, and then won their first playoff game in more than two decades.

The run was astounding, the story amazing and unprecedented, but for as much fun as it was, that slow start is not one this year’s team wishes to repeat, and that intention starts Sunday when the Chiefs host the division-rival San Diego Chargers at Arrowhead Stadium in their first game of the 2016 regular season.

“I felt like I could do a better job,” Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said this week when asked about the beginning of last season. “I thought as it went on, we kind of pushed and stressed a little bit more than just playing. We settled down and did that. We were playing some good teams too. I’m not going to short change the teams we were playing. We were feeling ourselves out. We kind of just settled down as it went, and we did better – coaches and players.”

To start on the right foot Sunday, the Chiefs will need to beat a revamped San Diego team that made some changes after posting a 4-12 record last season.

With quarterback Philip Rivers and tight end Antonio Gates serving as San Diego’s nearly-forever constants, the team added wide receiver Travis Benjamin from the Cleveland Browns this past offseason.

Benjamin, who was drafted by the Browns in the fourth round of the 2012 NFL Draft, is coming off his most productive season and was signed as a complement to Keenan Allen. Allen, the team’s No. 1 wide receiver, returns to San Diego after a season-ending lacerated kidney injury that cost him half the year.

Chiefs starting cornerbacks Marcus Peters and Phillip Gaines will be the most often tasked with guarding the duo. Peters is hoping to have a good follow-up season to his Defensive Rookie of the Year campaign in 2015, while Gaines makes his much-anticipated return to the regular-season starting lineup after missing nearly all of last year with a Week 3 left ACL tear.

Defensive coordinator Bob Sutton commended the way Gaines has improved week by week since the start of training camp.

“He’s feeling confident and fine there," Sutton said. "I think he’s feeling more comfortable as a player and his reaction time is improving. That’s where I think he’s really making some strides and he’s feeling good about it.”

Inside linebacker Justin March is also scheduled to make the first regular-season start of his career after losing his rookie year to a torn meniscus last preseason. March received the nod after it was announced Josh Mauga would miss the entire season due to a labral tear in his hip.

March will serve as the “Mike” next to veteran Derrick Johnson, who likes the way their chemistry progressed throughout the preseason.

“Our communication is getting better,” Johnson said. “He’s a guy that wants to learn all that he can. He asks me and Josh Mauga questions galore, he’s a young guy that’s very hungry and I’m excited to see what he does on Sunday. We know he can make plays.

”Starting safeties Eric Berry and Ron Parker will likely round out the base secondary for the Chiefs. LB Tamba Hali is expected to play in a limited role. LB Justin Houston, who is on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) List, will not play.

On offense for the Chiefs, running back Jamaal Charles, who may not be quite ready to return from last year’s ACL injury, is the only player on the current 53-man roster listed as doubtful for the game.

Some combination of Knile Davis, Spencer Ware and Charcandrick West is expected to fill in for Charles in the ground game. Ware and West combined for more than 1,000 yards rushing and 10 touchdowns in Charles’ absence last season.

“At the end of the day, we don’t care who’s in there,” West said this week. “As long as when that clock hits zero and we’re in the W column, we don’t care who is running the ball, who’s throwing it, who’s catching it. As long as someone is doing it, and we’re being productive.

”In the passing game, Chiefs QB Alex Smith looks to continue his trend upward since he joined the team in 2013. Over the past three seasons, Smith’s final passer rating has been higher than the last, and he had more yards passing in 2015 than any other year in his 11-year career.

Smith explained this week that he is very confident in this year’s Chiefs, and that comes from it being the fourth season under Reid and his West Coast offense.

“There’s a confidence that comes with knowing your system, your fundamentals, the way you’ve been coached, the way you’ve prepared,” Smith said. “The great thing going against our defense is you’ve really kind of seen everything, a form of it. You have the answers, a matter of going out and trusting what you’re seeing, trusting your coaching and being able to handle it.”

The biggest differences to the San Diego defense will be the addition of former Seattle Seahawk Brandon Mebane and the departure of long-time Chargers safety Eric Weddle. Weddle, who was with the team for nine seasons, departed for the Baltimore Ravens this offseason.

“Eric is a very talented player and he was the leader of our team, of our defense and did an outstanding job for us,” Chargers head coach Mike McCoy said via conference call this week. “In this business, change happens. I think the guys who’ve jumped in his position – we brought Dwight Lowery in. Dwight has done a nice job for us, and we have some players last year that got some valuable playing time and have done a nice job.

”San Diego CB Jason Verrett was limited at practice with a calf issue this week and the No. 3 overall pick in this year’s NFL Draft, defensive end Joey Bosa, is not expected to play.

There is no better way to start the season than against a division rival, and that is precisely what the Chiefs have on Sunday in the Chargers.

The players on each team are a little different, but the goal remains the same.

February football only happens by consistently winning from September to January.

    Game Preview
    from ESPN.com

The San Diego Chargers visit the Kansas City Chiefs in a division matchup that could jump-start either team's season.

The Chiefs swept the Chargers last year, winning both games, though the weather looks to be better this weekend than the last time these teams met at Arrowhead Stadium. The Chiefs beat the Chargers in Kansas City, 10-3, but the game was played in a torrential downpour. The running attacks of both teams needed to be good last year and both will be looking to control the football in this contest as well. That might not be as easy for the Chiefs as they would have liked.

The Chiefs' running game ended the 2015 campaign in solid shape even though four-time Pro-Bowl running back Jamaal Charles was on the shelf with a torn ACL in his right knee. The injury happened in Week 5, so many in the organization thought Charles would be ready to play in the 2016 opener. Those plans may be tempered against the Chargers on Sunday.

Charles will likely miss the season-opening game, Chiefs coach Andy Reid said Friday.

"He's probably not going to play," Reid told reporters when talking about his running back.

The Chiefs kept four running backs on the 53-man active roster with Charles still ailing. The tandem of Charcandrick West and Spencer Ware held up their end of the bargain in 2015. The running backs combined for 1,037 yards and 10 touchdowns.

The Chiefs kept Knile Davis, primarily a kickoff returner, as the fourth tailback as insurance in case Charles is not healthy enough to play against the Chargers.

Ware is the likely starter with West and Davis also available.

"They'll all play," Reid said. "We have some personnel groupings so we'll see how that goes. You could probably say that (Ware will start) but it depends on the personnel groups so don't hold me accountable."

Bosa started practice this week with his leg wrapped, observing from the sideline, and is not expected to play.

The starting nod goes to second-year defensive end Darius Philon. The former Arkansas Razorback is powerful with his hands and is strong at the point of attack. Philon is solid against the run when lined up next to nose tackle Brandon Mebane. Since the Chargers run a 3- 4 base defense, the nose tackle position is critical to eat up the blocks of the center and at least one of the offensive guards. That is a talent at which Mebane excels.

With Mebane occupying two blockers, this should free up starting inside linebackers Manti Te'o and Denzel Perryman to have clear paths to the Chiefs' ball carriers. If Te'o and Perryman fill the running lanes and tackle with force, the Chargers should be able to force the Chiefs into passing the football more than they would like.

    ---continued from previous post

That's where Bosa enters the picture. The Chargers lacked consistent pressure on quarterbacks in 2015. Bosa, along with outside linebackers Melvin Ingram and Jerry Attaochu or Kyle Emanuel, will be rushing the edges against free-agent right tackle Mitchell Schwartz and newly-paid left tackle Eric Fisher. The revamped offensive line must keep quarterback Alex Smith clean in the pocket. The pass rushers of the Chargers hope this offensive line is as leaky as last year's when the front five gave up 45 sacks on the season. Bosa, Ingram, Attaochu and Emanuel must get to Smith in the backfield if the Chargers hope to win the game.

Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers has never lacked confidence. Even with the Chargers coming off a 4-12 campaign and not winning a single AFC West contest, the signal-caller still believes in his squad.

"We believe in here that we can go from the very bottom to winning the division," said Rivers about the team's plan to rebound from a year ago.

The difference must begin with Rivers and a much-maligned offense. This was an offense that was so poor in 2015 that most of the offensive staff was fired.

Newly installed offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt needs to find a way to protect Rivers and establish a running game with Melvin Gordon. A 2015 rookie who had a very productive college career at Wisconsin, Gordon has yet to score a NFL touchdown or even rush for 100 yards in a game.

Rivers has a new pass-catcher in wide receiver Travis Benjamin to complement Keenan Allen. This duo needs to be active outside the hash marks against the young cornerbacks of the Chiefs. Both Steven Nelson and Marcus Peters are second-year players who are aggressive, but can be beaten deep. Phillip Gaines is also expected to see time at cornerback opposite Peters.

Chiefs game plan: Scouting the San Diego Chargers
    by beat writer Terez Paylor

    from
    The Kansas City Star

A detailed look at the key players and matchups for the Chiefs-Chargers game at noon Sunday in Arrowhead Stadium. The game will air on CBS (Ch. 5).

    Scheme

Coach: Fourth-year man Mike McCoy (23-27) is on the hot seat after a 4-12 season in which nearly everything that could go wrong, did. McCoy, 44, made his bones in the NFL as an offensive coordinator for Carolina and Denver and is known for his work with quarterbacks.

Offense: Used the most shotgun of any team in the NFL. Was primarily an “11” personnel (three-wide) team with some “22” personnel (two backs, two tight ends) mixed in. Quarterback Philip Rivers prefers the shotgun but the Chargers operated under center more this preseason to better take advantage of the strengths of second-year running back Melvin Gordon. The return of offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt, who helped Rivers have a career year in 2013, should help with that.

Defense: Defensive coordinator John Pagano generally relies on his 3-4 defensive front to provide pressure and is not overwhelmingly exotic in the blitz game, though he will use some line stunts to get home. The Chargers like to mix up man and zone coverage, with lots of single-high looks.

Four keys to a Chiefs victory

    1. Pound the rock

The Chargers had one of the league’s worst run defenses a year ago, ranking 27th in the NFL. The Chiefs did their part to contribute to that, rushing for nearly 205 yards — for an average of 4 yards per carry — in their two games against them a year ago. The Chargers are hoping free-agent nose tackle Brandon Mebane (6-1, 311) will make them more stout up front, but the Chiefs need to use 229-pound sledgehammer Spencer Ware and 205-pound slasher Charcandrick West to test the gap discipline and toughness of a defense that surrendered 288 rushing yards in its preseason opener against Tennessee.

    2. Attack the linebackers in coverage

The Chargers could seek to make a statement by selling out against the run early. In that instance, the Chiefs need to be ready to show off what potentially could be the most dynamic passing game of Andy Reid’s tenure. The Chargers’ best cornerbacks Jason Verrett (5-10, 188) and Casey Hayward (5-11, 192) are pretty solid — and Verrett shadowed Jeremy Maclin the last time they met — so the Chiefs might be wise to see if they can isolate inside linebackers Manti Te’o (6-1, 241) and Denzel Perryman (5-11, 240), a pair of thumpers, in coverage. Charcandrick West had a 63-yard touchdown catch a year ago in which the Chargers’ linebackers failed tackle him in space (it was called back).

    3. Be sound (and physical) vs. the run

Running back Melvin Gordon (6-1, 215) looks much quicker and explosive than last season, when he battled a knee issue, dealt with 26 different offensive-line combinations and didn’t score a single touchdown. He’s been helped by the Chargers’ renewed commitment to operating under center, which he grew comfortable with during his record-setting career at Wisconsin. San Diego’s running game stunk last season, but if the Chargers — whose offensive line is finally healthy and averages 6 feet 6 and 325 pounds across the board — are able to get it going on the ground, it will open the play-action passing game, where Rivers can slice you up. Look for the Chargers to test both the stoutness and gap discipline of outside linebacker Dee Ford and new inside linebacker Justin March-Lillard.

    4. Always account for Keenan Allen

Mounting a pass rush against 34-year-old star quarterback Philip Rivers (6-5, 228) is always important against the Chargers, but so is keeping a close eye on Allen (6-2, 211), his No. 1 target. Allen likes to line up on both sides of the formation, which means he won’t always see the Chiefs’ top cover corner, Marcus Peters. That could be a problem for a young secondary tasked with matching up against the crafty fourth-year pro Allen, a chain-mover who sometimes catches the ball with his body but consistenly wins both short and intermediate with his size, route running and ball skills. Agile run-after-the-catch threat, particularly on his pet routes, which include curls, slants and crossers.

    Four Chargers to watch

    No. 12, WR/PR Travis Benjamin, 26 years old, 5-10, 176 pounds, 5th season

Big-money free-agent acquisition with 4.36 speed and terrific short-area burst and quickness. Has home-run speed and can win on the deep ball; boasts an outstanding 52.3-yard average on touchdown catches. Possesses a very slight, narrow build; presents a small target on 50/50 balls and is vulnerable to physicality. Seems more comfortable on the outside than in the slot and is a weapon on screens. Should also add some punch to one of the worst punt-return units in NFL history, as the Chargers recorded only 84 punt-return yards a year ago, the fewest in the NFL since 1981.

    No. 77, LT King Dunlap, 30, 6-9, 330, 9th season

Mounting a pass rush against Rivers is always important, but the Chiefs’ other outside linebacker, Dee Ford, might have his hands full with right tackle Joe Barksdale (6-5, 326), who played well last season. That means Tamba Hali might have to make some hay against Dunlap, who is coming off a down season in which an ankle injury and a concussion limited him to only seven games. Dunlap is an extremely long, rangy tackle with decent athleticism who uses his size and understanding of angles to win in pass protection and the running game. Is difficult to run around; repeatedly uses his length to push edge rushers past the quarterback but can be beat on inside counter moves. Generally completes his assignment as a run blocker but is not overpowering, despite his imposing size. Body catcher who does not always generate movement at the point of attack due to his height, which makes it easier for smaller players to get into his chest.

    No. 54, OLB Melvin Ingram, 27, 6-2, 247, 5th season

Recorded a career-high 10 1/2 sacks last season. Played all 16 games for the first time since 2012. Will line up on both edges. Boasts the burst, strength and athleticism to consistently threaten the edge. Recorded a sack against the Chiefs last year in which he blew past right tackle Jah Reid at the snap with a speed rush, bent around the corner with a rip and sacked Alex Smith.

The Chiefs also surrendered a few sacks to the Chargers in the last game because they failed to pick up stunts; if they struggle there again, and Ingram gets going, the Chargers’ pass-rush can disrupt the passing game. Can be caught giving up the edge as a run defender. Will match up in coverage against some tight ends. Has good speed going forward but is tight in space.

    No. 24 CB Brandon Flowers, 30, 5-9, 187, 9th season

Undersized former Chief who has dealt with knee issues and is coming off one of his worst seasons as a pro. Played too heavy last year but is noticeably thinner and significantly more agile; he does not seem to allow as much separation out of breaks as he did a year ago. Plays lots of slot corner against three-wide sets and still has very good instincts for the position. Still a competitve, very willing tackler who will stick his nose in the action. Toughness allows him to be an effective blitzer from the slot. Made an impressive interception against Arizona three weeks ago where he blitzed from the slot, read the bubble screen and leaped into the passing lane for a pick-six.

    PREDICTION: Chiefs 34, Chargers 27

Both offenses should be able to put some points on the board, with the Chiefs scoring plenty behind a balanced attack and the Chargers taking advantage of an uncertain edge rush and some youth at cornerback. Alex Smith was good against the Chargers last year, completing 72 percent of his passes against the Chargers last year for 444 yards, and the Chiefs should have enough playmakers on defense to make get a stop or two when it counts.
