The Chiefs look to rebound from their first loss of the season back at Arrowhead Stadium against the Jets

Starting games slow is not a recipe for long-term success in the NFL, and through the season’s first two weeks, the Kansas City Chiefs (1-1) have done just that.

Against the San Diego Chargers in Week 1, they managed to erase a 21-point deficit en route to the greatest comeback win in franchise history, but they could not come back a week later against the Houston Texans in a 19-12 loss.

When asked about the two slow starts, head coach Andy Reid explained that everyone, both the coaching staff and the players, simply need to be better.

“I’ve got to make sure I do a better job of putting the guys in the right position and then when given the opportunity to make plays, we have to do that,” Reid said this week.

The challenge will be there for Reid’s offense as the Jets pose one of the best front sevens in the National Football League.

In their Week 1 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals, the Jets defense, led by Leonard Williams and Muhammad Wilkerson, sacked quarterback Andy Dalton seven times.

“Very, very strong inside seven,” co-offensive coordinator Brad Childress said. “The front seven is substantial. They’re big, physical guys – most of them are first round draft picks, and then you have a guy like David Harris who is a 10-year pro. Their anchoring linebacker, Erin Henderson, who was with the Vikings before he got there. The front seven is substantial.”

New York’s high-pressuring defense could potentially be an even greater challenge for the Chiefs this week, as they will be without starting left guard Parker Ehinger, as he deals with a concussion and foot injury, and backup guard Jah Reid, as he deals with knee and ankle injuries. Starting right guard Laurent Duvernay-Tardif is questionable with a lingering high-ankle sprain.

Jets linebackers David Harris and Henderson are questionable.

Behind the front seven is a Jets secondary led by a future Hall of Famer in cornerback Darelle Revis, who will surely provide a challenge for quarterback Alex Smith and the Chiefs offense.

“Watching him on film, he’s a good player,” Smith said. “He has good eyes, good feet, sees things well and he’s smart. I know there’s been two deep balls caught on him—one I’m not sure if you can totally put on him. That’s not what the media sees, so some of [the recent criticism] is a little overblown.”

The Jets will typically have Revis follow around an opposing team’s No. 1 aerial threat, so the expectation would have to be he’d be frequently matched up with wide receiver Jeremy Maclin on Sunday. Maclin has been targeted by Smith 22 times this season, and he has brought in 11 balls for 131 yards receiving and a touchdown.

With Jamaal Charles officially listed as doubtful to play once again, Spencer Ware and Charcandrick West should fill in for the Chiefs in the ground game.

So far through the two games, Ware has seen nearly double the workload of West as far as carries, but Reid and the offense have used them both depending upon the game situation. This has allowed the Chiefs to remain cautions with Charles.

“The way our running backs, Charcandrick and Spencer, are playing, it’s nice not to have that pressure where we need to hurry [Jamaal] back before he’s ready,” Smith added. The way these guys have been playing in the run and pass game, they’ve been really dynamic and have made plays for us. It’s nice for the organization, the coaches and Jamaal to not feel pressured.”

On defense, the Chiefs could be without cornerback Phillip Gaines, who only practiced limitedly on Friday due to a problem with his knee and is officially listed as questionable. Remember, Gaines had surgery to repair a torn ACL in his left knee this offseason.

If Gaines can’t go, the Chiefs could turn to rookie D.J. White, who has logged just one defensive snap this season, to see more time. Gaines’ fellow cornerback Steve Nelson, who has played more than 90 percent of Kansas City’s snaps in the first two games, would remain the right cornerback starter in the base defense across from Marcus Peters.

Chiefs LB Sam Barrington will also be out with a hamstring injury.

It isn’t the ideal time for injuries in the Chiefs defense, as the Jets offense was clicking on all cylinders last Thursday in their 37-31 win over the Buffalo Bills.

QB Ryan Fitzpatrick was 24 of 34 for 374 yards and a touchdown in the game, a line good enough for AFC Offensive Player of the Week honors.

The problem for Fitzpatrick is that he could be without his No. 1 wide receiver in Brandon Marshall, who is officially listed as questionable with knee and foot injuries. Eric Decker, an area of concern for the Jets earlier in the week, should be good to go.

Bowles: WR Brandon Marshall "probably a game-time decision."#NYJvsKC
    12:06 PM - 23 Sep 2016

With word out that Marshall could be a game-time decision, which could put added pressure on a younger player in third-year WR Quincy Enunwa, who is leading the team in receptions with 13 at the moment.

“[Quincy Enunwa] is playing at a really high level for them,” defensive coordinator Bob Sutton said. “He’s upped what he’s done and it’s upgraded their offense.”

Matt Forte, who joined the Jets this offseason after spending the first eight years of his career with the Chicago Bears, is another player that could have an impact this Sunday.

“He’s done a really nice job coming in and being professional,” Fitzpatrick said of Forte this week. “He does a great job with his vision and seeing holes and opening holes up, maybe when they’re not necessarily there and getting the tough yards. So, I think just his consistency – not just the way he runs the ball – but the way he can catch the ball out of the backfield will be a real asset for us as the year goes on.”

Though there are injuries on both sides, the weight of the game between two AFC playoff hopefuls remains stagnant.

Last year, the Jets finished 10-6, and it was AFC losses like this that kept them out. The Chiefs made the postseason, and it was winning games like this that got them in.

Winning games, especially against AFC foes, holds the same value whether they are played in mid-September or the end of December.

The Chiefs know they can’t come out slow for the third week in a row. Not against the Jets, and not against anyone.

    Game Preview from ESPN.com

Inconsistent Smith, Chiefs look to rebound vs. Jets

The third week of any season is not the point where teams, the media or fans can make many definitive statements about a specific club.

In another month, fortunes will rise and fall within the divisions. It's why every game is important in the season's final reckoning and the race for the playoffs.

That makes Sunday's meeting at Arrowhead Stadium (4:25 p.m. ET) a very important game for the New York Jets (1-1) and Kansas City Chiefs (1-1).

Both teams have seen very good play from parts of their roster, while at times also trying to solve problems with underachievement. The watch word around these teams would be Inconsistent.

However, both clubs should be in the mix in December when the league's contenders are fighting for spots in the playoffs. A 10-game winning streak at the end of the 2015 season punched Kansas City's ticket to the playoffs, while the Jets' chance evaporated in a loss to Buffalo in the last game of the regular season.

This is one of those games that looks good in the AFC standings and head-to-head tie-breakers.

"You love challenges in this business, from a coaching standpoint and player standpoint," Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said. "You work so hard to play against good caliber players. That's what this group is, so that'll be something to watch."

Jets head coach Todd Bowles knows what to expect from Kansas City. He was part of Reid's coaching staff in Philadelphia during the 2012 season.

"They're hard-nosed, tough and physical on both sides of the ball," Bowles said. "They've got playmakers on the outside, ball hawks at the corners, a tough safety, strong fast linebackers. They have a slew of running backs, a great tight end, a great receiver, and a quarterback who's very good."

That quarterback is Alex Smith and he's been the picture of inconsistency over the first two games.

In the opener against San Diego, Smith had one of the best passing days of his career in leading the Chiefs back from a 21-point deficit to beat the Chargers in overtime. Last Sunday, he was erratic and turned the ball over twice in the loss at Houston. The Chiefs did not score a touchdown against the Texans.

"Ultimately it comes down to a lack of execution," Smith said. "This last week certainly, every drive we had -- whether it be a penalty, a turnover, a sack, or a negative play -- it stalls the drive and it's hard to overcome versus a talented defense."

The start of the season has brought about questions concerning Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis. Long considered one of the league's top cover corners, the 31-year old Revis has struggled as Cincinnati wide receiver A.J. Green burned him and Buffalo's Marquise Goodwin caught an 84-yard touchdown pass.

Reid, however, said he didn't see anything on the game tapes to show a crack in Revis' skill level.

"He's getting older, but he's wiser," Reid said. "I've got a ton of respect for the guy. He transitions so easy with his hips and his ability to look back and run fast are unbelievable.

"Listen, I know they're saying he got beat. Maybe he gets beat one time. But the ones that people are saying, he didn't have help on; there weren't people in the middle of the field. So that's not his responsibility. He looks pretty good me. He looks pretty stinking good."

While the Jets have the veteran presence of Revis in their secondary, the Chiefs are like a football daycare center for cornerbacks. They play three in coordinator Bob Sutton's scheme: Phillip Gaines (25), Steven Nelson (22) and Marcus Peters (23). That group has struggled in two games, giving up 100-yard receiving performances last Sunday to Houston's DeAndre Hopkins and rookie Will Fuller.

The Jets' offense enters the game with a great deal of confidence after their victory last week over Buffalo. Quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick was named AFC Offensive Player of the Week for his performance, completing 24 of 34 passes for 374 yards and a touchdown toss. New York ran up 493 yards against the Bills.

"It's fun with everybody involved and everybody making plays," Fitzpatrick said. "The confidence in the huddle and the way the guys felt, we knew we were going to get in the end zone."

Fitzpatrick also understands that this Sunday dawns a new NFL day.

"The NFL is crazy in that we're only as good as what we do this week," he said. "We're not going to sit and celebrate last week because we have to move on. We have a team that last year won 11 straight and were a playoff team and have played very well already this year. And, it's a very tough place to play."

Chiefs game plan: Scouting the New York Jets (1-1)
    From The Kansas City Star

    Red Zone

The Chiefs and NFL by beat writer Terez Paylor

    SEPTEMBER 23, 2016 9:40 AM

    Scheme

Coach: Todd Bowles (13-8) is in his second year on the job. He took over in 2015 for Rex Ryan and guided the Jets to a six-win improvement with a steady hand. He got the job by building a strong, aggressive defense in Arizona that relied on tight, man-to-man coverage and showed a knack for creating turnovers and scoring defensive touchdowns. His Jets also play good situational football on defense; they’re good in the red zone and on third down.

Offense: Chan Gailey, a former NFL head coach,is in his second year as the offensive coordinator. The offense thrived in 2015, when the Jets set club records for total offense, passing yards and completions. He has a solid reputation for doing good work with quarterbacks and using lots of three-wide formations (39 percent of the time in ’15) and four-wide (18 percent) but is generally patient with the running game.

    Defense:
Kacy Rodgers enters his second year as the defensive coordinator. He made his bones in the league as a defensive-line coach, where his Dolphins produced the third-most sacks of any unit from 2008 to 2014. Bowles, a respected defensive mind, reportedly does not call plays but is still involved in the defensive gameplan. The Jets have held teams to 3.4 yards per carry, the second-best mark in the league, since Bowles’ arrival, and rank fourth in takeaways since 2015.

    Special teams:
Returner Jalin Marshall (5-10, 200) has decent speed (4.6 40-yard dash) but is slippery and dangerous; he broke off a 65-yard return against the Bengals in Week 1, so the coverage unit will need to be on point. Marshall fumbled last week though, so the Chiefs might actively try to poke the ball out on any return. Tyreek Hill or Knile Davis may have a chance to return some kicks this week, as Nick Folk has only drilled 43 percent of his kickoffs for touchbacks this year. The Jets have been OK at covering them, though. Folk has made 6 of 7 field goals this year, tied for the second-most in the league.

Four keys to a Chiefs victory

    1. Get on the same page, offensively
After a 19-12 loss to Houston that featured more instances of quarterback-receiver miscommunication than normal, everyone involved — from quarterback Alex Smith to his top target, Jeremy Maclin — needs to get back on the same page. If they can do that, they’ll have a chance to move the ball on a Jets defense that has surrendered an average of nearly 316 passing yards a game (26th in the league).

    2. Stop the mistakes

The Chiefs are 26th in the NFL in turnover margin after a three-turnover game against Houston on Sunday, and that’s just not good enough. Besides, the Jets will pose enough of a challenge without giving them breaks. That especially applies up front, where the Chiefs have surrendered seven sacks (29th in the league) while the Jets have recorded seven sacks (tied for fourth). Anchored by stud defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson (6-4, 315) —ranked No. 39 in the NFL’s top 100 — New York’s defensive front can really get after you.

    3. Win up front

Jets quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick likes to chuck the ball deep; they even use four-wide sets with regularity, which is a look the Chiefs haven’t seen much of this year. Defensive coordinator Bob Sutton said it’s offensive coordinator Chan Gailey’s preferred style. “It’s something he really believes in and it causes issues from time to time from matchup standpoints,” Sutton said. “They can spread you out and do a good running the ball.” One of the best ways to disrupt teams that do this is by rushing the quarterback, which means the Chiefs’ interior linemen and edge rushers need to be able to win their individual battles up front to effect the sometimes-erratic Fitzpatrick. Perhaps they’ll try to target the two young and unproven right tackles, Brent Qvale (6-7, 315) and Ben Ijalana (6-4, 322), with stunts and blitzes. The two rotate in at the position.

    4. Keep your composure

The Jets’ top trio of receivers — stud Brandon Marshall (6-4, 230) (ranked No. 25 in the NFL’s top 100), Eric Decker (6-3, 214) and Quincy Enunwa (6-2, 225) — is terrific. Most have heard of the first two receivers, but Enunwa, who is quick and powerful, has also made an impression on defensive coordinator Bob Sutton. They point is, there’s a good chance this group will make a few plays on Sunday, so the key for the Chiefs’ secondary will be keeping its composure and bouncing back. Marcus Peters will be at the center of that, especially after he’s been so animated in the first two games, but he typically finds a way to make teams pay eventually.

    Four Jets to watch

    No. 14, QB Ryan Fitzpatrick, 33 years old, 6-2, 223, 12th season
A Harvard grad who is coming off a nice statistical season (59.6 completion percenage, 31 touchdowns, 15 interceptions). Puts enough heat on the short to intermediate routes but his accuracy can waver on deeper throws, as the ball will occasionally float. Still, he’ll regularly try to test a defense vertically, as only one other quarterback (Cincinnati’s Andy Dalton) has completed more passes of 20 yards or more than Fitzpatrick this season. Was on point against Buffalo, completed eight passes of 20 yards or more to four different receivers while constantly taking advantage of single coverage on the outside with little help over the top (finished 24 of 34 for 374 yards and one touchdown). Has very good chemistry with his receivers; can get the ball to his playmakers quickly, even if they have to make tough catches sometimes (which they often do) because his accuracy can decline on short and intermediate throws, too. Is fairly nimble in the pocket; has a knack for avoiding sacks and is not afraid to take off and run if a lane emerges (270 rushing yards in ’15). Will throw off his back foot when pressured.

    No. 22, RB Matt Forte, 30 years old, 6-2, 218, 9th season
Ranked No. 90 in the NFL’s top 100. Dealt with a balky hamstring during the preseason but scored three touchdowns last week against Buffalo and has posted over 100 all-purpose yards in each of his first two games. Veteran, workhorse do-it-all back who consistently hits singles and doubles and often falls forward. Strong, patient glider with good vision who did most of his damage against Buffalo on runs between the tackles. Has good feet and is fairly nifty; has some quickness and juice when he has a head of steam but is not a burner. Has some power and possesses a knack for avoiding big hits. Has good hands, is a solid route runner (effective on screens) and is a willing and reliable pass blocker. They’ll go to quick and capable backup Bilal Powell (5-10, 204) when they want a chance of pace. They’ll team up to test a Chiefs run defense that was much better against Houston than it was against San Diego.

    No. 91, DE Sheldon Richardson, 25 years old, 6-3, 294, 4th season

Former Missouri star returned in Week 2 after serving a one-game suspension for violating the league’s personal-conduct policy. Teams up with Wilkerson and Leonard Williams (6-5, 302) to form an outstanding trio of interior down linemen. Lined up at right end, both shaded to the left tackle’s outside shoulder and a few yards wider than that, against Buffalo. Also lined up in the “A” gap between the center and left guard and as a three-technique (in passing situations) and showed good quickness off the snap. Rushed from a two- and three-point stance off the edge, where his initial quickness and athleticism for an edge player is adequate; still shows burst on stunts. Generally plays hard and pursues, both laterally and downfield, as he actively hunts tackles. Has powerful hands — can shock and jolt linemen when engaged, then find the ball. Has effective swim and rip moves and will use both, with good results. Only played 75 percent of the snaps against Buffalo, compared to 96 percent for Wilkerson and 85 percent for Williams. Finished the game with four tackles.

    No. 24, CB Darrelle Revis, 31, 5-11, 198, 10th season

Pro Bowler in seven of the last eight seasons who ranked No. 24 on the NFL’s top 100 list for 2016 but has struggled some in coverage this season. Mainly lines up at left cornerback unless he’s traveling with a receiver; will be interesting to see if they match him up with Jeremy Maclin. Cincinnati’s A.J. Green caught 12 passes for 180 yards and a touchdown while being shadowed by Revis in Week 1. Revis was also beat over the top for a long touchdown last week against Buffalo on a play in which he appeared to be late with his eyes. Willing tackler who generally gets the job done, even in space. Had four fumble recoveries last year, the most among cornerbacks. Very smart player who understands concepts. Still has very good feet and hips, particularly in press coverage near the line of scrimmage. Is aware and can play the ball in the air. Top-end speed and transitional quickness did not look the same against Buffalo, however; was a little grabby.

    Prediction:
    Chiefs 24-23

The Jets will be rested after disposing of Buffalo on Thursday Night Football, but the Chiefs are coming off a bad performance in which they turned the ball over way too much and were very undisciplined. Andy Reid teams typically bounce back, so it would be a surprise if the offense didn’t look much better — and get off to a stronger start — in a winnable home game. It will be close, because the Jets are competitive, but the Chiefs are probably the better team, provided they stop shooting themselves in the foot.

I'm worried about this game. I don't know much about the Jets, but everything I read suggests they are a team headed for the playoffs. And of course, with the exception of about 25 minutes against the Chargers our Chiefs haven't looked too good this year. And we have a couple of stars in Houston and JC that are out. We've got an advantage in that we are at Arrowhead but to win this game we are going to have to go out and play 60 minutes of solid football on both sides of the ball. The oddsmakers say Chiefs by 3 but they also figure homefield advantage as worth 3 point so essentially they say the two teams are evenly matched. I hope they are right, because we can't afford to be as flat as a pancake for the first half as we have been the last two weeks.
