Philip Rivers promises the Chiefs will get max effort from Chargers

    • KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The 11-4 Kansas City Chiefs can win the AFC West championship on Sunday, but only if beating the Chargers in San Diego is part of the equation. The other part of the equation is an Oakland Raiders loss to the Broncos in Denver. Against Sain Diego, the Chiefs are the team with the obvious motivation. Win or lose, the season ends Sunday for the 5-10 Chargers.

But quarterback Philip Rivers promised his team would give an effort worthy of a team trying to make the playoffs or win the division.
“They’re going to get everything we’ve got," Rivers said. “That’s the only way we do it here. That’s the only way we’ve done it in years past when we’ve been eliminated."

Philip Rivers is still a little salty about letting the Week 1 game against the Chiefs slip away. Norm Hall/Getty ImagesThe Chargers faced a similar situation in their final game last season against the Broncos in Denver. The Broncos needed a victory to secure the division title.

The Broncos won 27-20, but the Chargers pushed them to the end.

Rivers said he was a Chiefs fan, if only for one night, last Sunday when they faced the Broncos needing a victory to keep alive their hopes of winning the AFC West title. If they win the division, the Chiefs would be the AFC’s No. 2 playoff seed, a prize that carries with it a bye in the first round of the postseason. Rivers got his wish for a Kansas City victory when the Chiefs beat the Broncos, 33-10.

“I was pulling like crazy for the Chiefs on Sunday night to beat Denver and hoping they were going to play playing us for the (AFC West championship and) the two-seed so you get a little bit of that playoff-game type feel since we’re not going to be in them," Rivers said.

Rivers said the Chargers feel they owe one to the Chiefs from the Sept. 11 season-opener between the teams at Arrowhead Stadium. The Chargers led 24-3 in the third quarter before the Chiefs stormed back to send the game to overtime and then win it 33-27 in the extra period.

“We feel like we let the Week 1 game get away," Rivers said. “We dominated the game for 50 minutes. They dominated us for 10 minutes and they won. Credit to them. They beat us. But there’s still some saltiness around here about that game because that kind of was the beginning of what turned into losing a lot of close games early in the year and putting us in that 1-4 hole."

Probably. What worries me about Phillip Rivers, is with all that turmoil that comes from (another) losing season...Will the guy get traded away for draft picks if McCoy gets the axe? That's not a stable situation in SD.
