If you want to beat a good football team, if you want to come out on top of a legend, you had better play and produce for a full 60 minutes. Going for 55 minutes will not get the job done.
Just ask the Chiefs.
With five minutes, 18 seconds to play, the Chiefs held a 22-16 lead over the Green Bay Packers thanks to a Tony Gonzalez touchdown catch and a Priest Holmes two-point conversion leap.
They were 318 seconds away from their fifth victory of the season.
They ended up losing by 11 points.
When crunch time came Sunday afternoon at Arrowhead, the Chiefs got crushed by Brett Favre and the Packers. Green Bay scored 17 points in those 318 seconds to walk away with a 33-22 victory.
No lead is ever safe when playing against a guy like Favre. The Chiefs knew that. Everybody in the NFL knows that. Leading by six points with just over five minutes to play is nothing for Favre to overcome.
The Chiefs did not need to help them, but that’s what happened. The Packers got a field goal early in the quarter when after a Chiefs touchdown, kicker Dave Rayner punched his kickoff out of bounds, giving Green Bay starting field position at the 40-yard line. The defense held them to three points and the Chiefs got the ball back and drove down the field on six plays for 82 yards and eight points.
All was well in the land of red and gold.
But it took Favre only 2:13 to score the touchdown and PAT kick that gave his team the lead for good. He hit Donald Driver for 11 yards, Koren Robinson for 11 yards, Robinson again for no gain and then connected with Greg Jennings who beat Donnie Edwards and Jarrad Page deep for a 60-yard TD. Chiefs came back and thought they had a nice 36-yard play from Damon Huard to Jeff Webb, but Webb couldn’t get both feet down in bounds and a replay challenge overturned the ruling on the field that he made the catch. BREAKDOWN #2.
On the next play, Huard was sacked by Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila who badly beat left tackle Damion McIntosh. BREAKDOWN #3.
The Chiefs punted, but ended up with a net kick of just 16 yards thanks to a 27-yard return by Charles Woodson. BREAKDOWN #4.
The defense held Green Bay to a field goal, giving the Packers a four-point lead with 1:40 to play. On his third pass, Huard was picked off by Charles Woodson who took it back for a touchdown. BREAKDOWN #5.
Any one of those plays could have been survived. But when they come in concert, over a short period of time, they proved devastating.
But maybe no more devastating than the foot injury suffered by Larry Johnson. It came with just under eight minutes to play in the fourth quarter when his foot was caught under him and Packers linebacker A.J. Hawk. Johnson had to be helped from the field and after the game he was tucked away in the Chiefs training room.
Right now, the Chiefs aren’t sure just how serious this injury may be. X-rays and MRIs figure to fill the next 24 hours. If he’s gone for any amount of time, the Chiefs offensive problems only get worse.
