IMHO Reid isn't going to get fired unless he has back to back losing seasons. As much as we're ticked off at him, don't see it happening.
Our injured players aren't going to magically get well overnight. We really don't have many options at replacing players with guys that are as good or better than what we have, so I don't expect to hear about Veach bringing in people for interviews etc, etc. So not much changing personnel-wise.
So that leaves us with what we currently have, and what we do with them. Like you've already pointed out, Reid is pretty committed to running crap plays. It's unlikely he's going to divorce himself from the playcall process altogether. So the one main thing we can change with what we have, something that if it worked would drive teams nuts trying to figure us out as we go into the last six games...would be to start Mahomes.
I definitely consider it a "nuclear" option (no going back once you've done it), and there's no guarantee that Mahomes would do any better than Alex has with Reid's game plan, or if the WR's would quit dropping the ball or actually block or run a route, and there's no guarantee that Mahomes wouldn't get injured behind our O-line. And yes Mahomes is probably going to throw a lot more INT's, but I think he'd catch a lot of teams off guard for the remaining stretch.
