The Chiefs are looking to get back on track on Sunday
It’s been a tough stretch for the Kansas City Chiefs.
They’ve dropped three-straight games and five of their last six contests, but despite all that, everything the Chiefs set out to accomplish prior to the season is still within reach.
The Chiefs lead the division and control their postseason destiny with five games to play, with three of those games at Arrowhead Stadium.
And it just takes one victory to tilt the momentum in the other direction, as the season’s first five weeks demonstrated.
“It’s always just one win away from getting that ball rolling in the right direction,” said linebacker Derrick Johnson. “We just have to make it happen. The sense of urgency is here, we all know that, it’s no secret.”
The Chiefs have a chance to make it happen this weekend as they travel to MetLife Stadium to take on the New York Jets.
Kansas City saw New York in Week 3 last season, winning a memorable game in which the Chiefs forced eight turnovers – the second-most in franchise history.
This year’s matchup features two teams looking to get back into the win column.
Expected to be in the midst of a rebuilding season, New York marched out to a surprising 3-2 start to the year before dropping five of its last six games.
They’ve consistently managed to keep it close, dropping all five losses in that stretch by a single score, but don’t have much to show for it in the standings.
The Jets are led by veteran quarterback Josh McCown, who’s put together an impressive season at 38 years of age.
The journeyman signal caller owns a 95.3 passer rating on the season, completing 67.3 percent of his passes and throwing 17 touchdowns to eight interceptions.
He’s found wide receiver Robby Anderson for seven of those touchdowns in what’s been a breakout season for the second-year wide out.
Anderson has hauled in 41 catches for 714 yards and has scored in five-straight games, the second-longest streak in team history. He’s averaging 17.4 yards per reception, the fourth-highest mark in the league.
McCown and Anderson’s numbers haven’t always translated to offensive success though, as New York is managing just 20.7 points per game in what’s been an up-and-down year on that side of the ball.
There’s performances like last week, when New York put up 27 points against the NFC South-leading Carolina Panthers, but also like two weeks ago, when the Jets scored just 10 points against a 4-7 Tampa Bay team.
The ability to run the ball effectively, or lack thereof, is at the root of New York’s inconsistencies on offense.
The Jets have scored 20 or more points seven times this season, rushing for at least 90 yards in six of those games. Conversely, New York has tallied 75 or fewer yards on the ground four times – scoring 17 or less points in each of those games.
Essentially, when the Jets are able to move the ball on the ground, they tend to put up points, and when they can’t, they struggle to score.
That matches up well with Kansas City, which has been stout against the run over the past three weeks. The Chiefs have held the opposition – which included tailbacks Ezekiel Elliott and LeSean McCoy – to just 3.47 yards per carry in that span.
The Jets’ Bilal Powell, who’s averaging 4.45 yards per carry on the year, will get the majority of the carries on Sunday, along with rookie Elijah McGuire and 10-year veteran Matt Forte.
Stopping the run became a point of emphasis after some struggles earlier in the season.
“Early on we were getting gashed at times, but now it’s talked about throughout the day,” Johnson said. “We’re not going to get complacent on that because stopping the run is going to help our team win - especially down the stretch. We have to get even tougher as December comes around.”
Success in that area has translated to a better effort overall defensively, as the Chiefs have held opponents to a combined 28 points over the past two weeks.
While it hasn’t led to wins, it’s an encouraging sign moving forward.
Another intriguing storyline on defense is the addition of cornerback Darrelle Revis, who has a chance to make his season debut against his former team on Sunday.
Revis played a total of eight seasons in two stints with New York, racking up 25 interceptions (third in franchise history) and 112 passes defensed (most in franchise history) while in the green and white.
The 11-year veteran signed with Kansas City on Nov. 22 and is already familiar with Defensive Coordinator Bob Sutton’s scheme, as the two spent time together with the Jets before Sutton joined the Chiefs in 2013.
He’ll be a player to keep an eye on if he’s able to suit up on Sunday as the defense looks to continue its strong play moving forward.
Oddly enough, the emergence of the defense has coincided with some struggles on the offensive side of the ball.
Kansas City averaged 29.5 points per game through the season’s first eight weeks, ranking third in the league, but hasn’t been able to find that success of late.
It’s something the Chiefs feel confident they can correct.
“I’ve said it from the beginning, none of it is from lack of effort,” said Offensive Coordinator Matt Nagy. “As long as you have effort, this thing will turn around. You go in, watch the tape and see where the execution is. It’s been one little thing here and there throughout and we’re going to get better and improve. Trust me, we all want to win, we all understand what’s been going on and we’re going to do everything we can to fix it.”
The Jets’ defense ranks in the middle of the pack this season, presenting a favorable opportunity for Kansas City to turn things around on offense this weekend.
This has also traditionally been the time of year that the Chiefs begin to ramp things up.
Kansas City is 9-3 in the month of December since 2014, winning eight of the last nine.
The Chiefs are looking to add to that on Sunday, as Kansas City takes aim at the first of five crucial games down the stretch.

Game Preview from ESPN.com
Revis aims to provide skidding Chiefs with jolt vs. Jets
Yes, Darrelle Revis will be suiting up for the Kansas City Chiefs at MetLife Stadium on Sunday when they visit the New York Jets, a team with which he played for eight seasons.
But Jets fans have seen Revis return twice before.
The seven-time Pro Bowl cornerback's first game after he initially left, in 2013, was against the Jets as a member of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He came back again with the hated New England Patriots the following season en route to winning the Super Bowl.
Both times Revis' teams left as one-point winners.
The more pressing issue for the Chiefs is trying to fix their stunning and prolonged downturn toward mediocrity. After impressive wins over the Patriots and Philadelphia Eagles en route to a 5-0 start, Kansas City has lost five of six and is clinging to a one-game lead over the surging Los Angeles Chargers (5-6) in the AFC West.
Three of the Chiefs' six losses have come to teams that currently have a losing record, including a 12-9 overtime loss to the New York Giants two weeks ago at the same stadium in which they'll play the Jets on Sunday.
After throwing 11 touchdown passes and no interceptions in the first five games, Alex Smith has eight TDs and four picks in the last six. Rookie Kareem Hunt failed to break 73 yards rushing, with no touchdowns, in the last six games after posting four 100-yard games and four touchdowns in the first five.
Though Smith's numbers haven't been a train wreck during the skid, fans (as they are wont to do) are calling for a quarterback change to rookie Patrick Mahomes, whom Kansas City traded up 17 spots to take 10th overall in April's draft. Mahomes, who impressed with his rocket arm in the preseason, was the first quarterback the Chiefs selected in the first round since Todd Blackledge in 1983, so one can understand the fans' excitement.
But Andy Reid, who's in his 19th straight season as an NFL head coach (five with the Chiefs), isn't letting the outside noise influence him.
"The thing I can do is stand before you and tell you that this isn't an Alex Smith thing," Reid said. "It's all of us. I think -- I know -- our players understand that, and coaches. We're all going to do better and raise our game up."
He's right that it isn't all on Smith, and that's where Revis comes back into the conversation.
The Chiefs have the 27th-ranked pass defense in the league, and their 21 sacks place them 21st. Cornerback Marcus Peters has three interceptions and two forced fumbles this season, but even he was burned on a crossing route by rookie Zay Jones for the Bills' only touchdown in last week's 16-10 loss to Buffalo at home.
It speaks volumes that the Chiefs were desperate enough to bring in the 32-year-old Revis, who looked washed up last season with the Jets. Revis allowed receivers to catch 67 percent of passes with him in coverage last season.
"We're going to find out how much he has left, because the Jets will go after him," Rex Ryan, who coached Revis for four years with the Jets and also faced him as an opponent seven times, told The New York Daily News. "The Jets know as well as anybody that he didn't play that well last year. If his technique is played the same as last year, well, they're going to go after him."
They certainly will. The Jets (4-7) have also lost five of six and are 3.5-point underdogs as of Wednesday evening, but what they have in their favor is a strong deep passing game. Robby Anderson scored in five straight games (the longest active streak in the NFL), including two in last week's 35-27 loss to the Carolina Panthers. The shortest of his seven touchdowns this season was 18 yards, while four were more than 30 yards and two were 50-plus.
This stat shows how potent the Josh McCown-Anderson connection has been this season: On passes thrown 30 yards or more beyond the line of scrimmage, the Jets are tied for the league lead for the best completion percentage (50) and most touchdowns (five).
But the Jets have struggled in the fourth quarter this season, having been outscored 117-44 in the final 15 minutes, while seven of McCown's 11 turnovers have come in last period.
The Chiefs have outscored their opponents 98-67 in the fourth.
"We expect to get the best Kansas City team," Jets head coach Todd Bowles said. "Obviously, they started fast and we don't know the reason why they won or why they lost. We just know they're dangerous."

Chiefs-Jets scouting report, key players to watch,
and a prediction
From The Kansas City Star
Red Zone
The Chiefs and NFL by beat writer Terez Paylor
DECEMBER 02, 2017 07:41 AM
The scheme
Head coach: Todd Bowles (19-24) is in his third year on the job. Bowles, 54, is a former free safety and four-year starter at Temple University who was inducted into the school’s Hall of Fame in 2001. He signed with Washington as an undrafted free agent in 1986 and carved out an eight-year career that included a stint with the San Francisco 49ers. When his playing career came to a close, he spent three years coaching at Morehouse University before joining the Jets as their secondary coach in 2000. He also enjoyed stints in the same position with the Cleveland Browns, Dallas Cowboys, Miami Dolphins and Philadelphia Eagles, with the latter coming in 2012, when he also served as an interim defensive coordinator for current Chiefs coach Andy Reid. Bowles then moved on to the Arizona Cardinals, where he fielded one of the league’s best defenses the next two years and was chosen the AP’s assistant coach of the year in 2014. He was hired to be the Jets’ head coach following the firing of Rex Ryan.
Offense: John Morton, 48, is in his first year as the Jets’ offensive coordinator. He was hired after spending the previous two years under offensive guru Sean Payton as the New Orleans Saints’ receivers coach. Morton, a former CFL receiver who also served as offensive coordinator at USC under Pete Carroll from 2009-2010 and receivers coach in San Francisco under Jim Harbaugh during 2011-2014, has done an admirable job this year with a unit that was expected to be putrid. The Jets rank 23rd in total offense (314.5 yards per game), 18th in passing offense (212.3) and 20th in rushing offense (102.3). The Jets like to run the ball behind the right tackle, where they rank eighth in the league in attempts and first in the league in average gain (6.6 yards). New York is passing the ball 58 percent of the time, which ranks 16th in the NFL, and typically attacks the right side when going deep, where it ranks first in the league in average gain (18.9 yards per play). The Jets also rank third in the NFL in average gain over the short middle (9.47 yards) and rarely use play-action (12 percent, 30th in the league), according to Football Outsiders.
Defense: Kacy Rodgers, 48, is in his third year as the Jets’ defensive coordinator. Rodgers, a four-year letterman at the University of Tennessee, spent nine years coaching defensive lines in college before he was hired to be the Dallas Cowboys’ defensive tackles coach in 2003. He eventually spent seven years as the Miami Dolphins’ defensive line coach before taking his current position with the Jets. New York runs a 3-4 defense that ranks 20th in total defense (342.5 yards per game), 15th in pass defense (222.2) and 23rd in sacks (22). Teams love to attack the left side of the Jets’ defense with the pass, be it short (eighth-most attempts) or deep (seventh-most attempts). They also fare well against play action, yielding 7 yards per attempt on such plays (tied for seventh in the league). The Jets are also surrendering 9.31 yards per gain on throws over the middle, which ranks 25th in the league, though teams rarely do it (31st in attempts). New York’s run defense also ranks 26th in the league (120.4), as teams typically run the ball behind the left guard against the Jets, who are surrendering an average of 4.02 yards on such plays — 23rd in the league. The Jets are also surrendering more than 4 yards per play on runs behind the center and right guard.
Special teams: Brant Boyer, 46, is in his second year as the Jets’ special-teams coach. Boyer, a former linebacker at the University of Arizona who carved out a 10-year NFL career, served as a training camp intern for the Cleveland Browns in 2009 and the New York Giants in 2010 before joining the Indianapolis Colts as an assistant special-teams coach in 2012, a position he served in until 2016, when he was hired for his current position with the Jets. Kicker Chandler Catanzaro has made 18 of 22 field-goal attempts, and his 82 percent conversion rate ranks 21st in the league among players with at least 10 attempts. Punter Lac Edwards has dropped four of his 61 punts inside the 20, tied for 18th in the league. The Jets rank 23rd in kickoff returns (20.4 yards per return) and 30th in punt returns (5.1). They also rank 21st in kick-return coverage (22.6) and 24th in punt-return coverage (10.2), where they’ve surrendered a touchdown.
Four keys to a Chiefs victory
1. Come out with some juice
It’s been weeks — WEEKS — since the Chiefs started a game with any energy on offense. Much of that is tied to execution, because — as many players privately pointed out this week — it’s hard to be excited when you aren’t seeing results on a play-by-play basis. The Chiefs need to hit on a big play early offensively. Whether it’s Alex Smith, Tyreek Hill, Travis Kelce or even Kareem Hunt, who has been quiet for the better part of a month, somebody has to do something to energize his teammates in the first quarter. Otherwise, we could be tracking toward another inept performance.
2. Dominate up front
The Jets’ defense is probably a little better than you think, particularly the front seven. The starting interior defensive line of Leonard Williams, Steve McClendon and Mo Wilkerson has the potential to dominate the Chiefs up front if the offensive line doesn’t come to play. In fact, they’re banking on it. Teams that have had success against the Jets this year have been able to win at the line of scrimmage, forcing them to bring their safeties closer to the action (which opens up the pass). It’s time for the Chiefs’ offensive line to get on track. If it doesn’t, there could be some tough sledding against this Jets defense, which also features a really good inside linebacker in Demario Davis.
3. Pressure McCown
The Jets’ offensive line has been a disappointment, and quarterback Josh McCown has constantly found himself under fire this season. He’s been sacked 35 times this season, tied for the third-most in football, which means the Chiefs have a chance to get after him. Justin Houston could have a nice game against right tackle Brandon Shell, while left tackle Kelvin Beachum is solid. The Chiefs could really make hay against the Jets’ interior, which has struggled in pass protection. That means Bennie Logan, Allen Bailey and Chris Jones need to do their part to make life difficult on McCown.
4. Win the special-teams battle
The best way to snap out of a slump like the Chiefs’ is to win the special-teams battle, and let’s face it, it’s been a while — week 5 against Houston — since the Chiefs’ special teams have made a game-changing play. That’s not like the Chiefs, especially with special-teams guru Dave Toub in charge. Teams are actively trying to take away Tyreek Hill by skying punts high in the air, but Toub says that’s no excuse. “When we don’t make a big play, we feel like it was a bad game for us,” Toub said. “Last week we felt like we didn’t contribute to helping us win that game so it was disappointing. But we can bounce back and have a good one this week.”
Four Jets to watch
No. 15, QB Josh McCown, 38 years old, 6-4, 218, 15th season
Third-round pick of the Arizona Cardinals in 2002 who has played for 10 teams during his journeyman career. Completed 54.5 percent of his passes for 1,100 yards, six touchdowns and six interceptions in five games last season with the Cleveland Browns. Has surprised this year for the Jets, as he’s on pace to complete 67.3 percent of his passes for 3,708 yards, 25 touchdowns and 12 interceptions — a career year. Is on track to start all 16 games for the first time in his career. Has also rushed 28 times for 98 yards and three touchdowns. Generally makes good decisions with the football, at least this year. Is aggressive with his downfield shots but is most accurate on short passes. Has enough arm strength to make most of the throws. Needs to do a better job securing the football; has fumbled 10 times this year. Decent runner for his age.
No. 11, WR Robby Anderson, 24 years old, 6-3, 190, second season
Former undrafted free agent who is building off a rookie season in which he caught 42 passes for 587 yards and two touchdowns in 16 games. Is on track to catch 60 passes for 1,039 yards and 10 touchdowns this season. Long-ball threat who must be accounted for vertically. Can really run; ran a blistering 4.34 40-yard dash at his pro day a few years ago, even though it didn’t always look that way on tape. Has good ball skills and can win jump balls vertically. Has the tools to make difficult catches but will make the occasional focus drop. Can be re-routed by physical corners due to his frame. Lack of strength hurts him as a run blocker.
No. 92, DE Leonard Williams, 23 years old, 6-5, 302, third season
Former No. 6 overall pick who posted a breakout second season in 2016 in which he recorded 68 tackles, seven sacks and 19 quarterback hurries and went to the Pro Bowl. Numbers have fallen off some this year, as he’s on pace to finish with 52 tackles, three sacks and 28 hurries, but is still very disruptive vs. the run and pass. Has all the physical tools to be an All-Pro defensive lineman. Good athlete with strength and quickness who is living up to his draft status. Was inconsistent off the snap in college but has gotten better at that. Has a bull rush and plays his tail off. Leads the Jets in snaps.
No. 56, ILB Demario Davis, 28 years old, 6-2, 248, sixth season
Former Jets third-round pick in 2012 who signed with Cleveland in 2016 and recorded 99 tackles, two sacks and two pass deflections. Was traded back to the Jets this June and is in the midst of a career year in which he’s on pace to finish with 134 tackles, seven sacks and four pass deflections. Really good athlete — was a top tester at his position in multiple categories at the NFL Combine — who fits the profile of a classic run-and-hit linebacker. Plays hard and gets after it. Complete linebacker who is solid in pass coverage.
Prediction: Chiefs 17-13
A leap-of-faith pick. The last time the Chiefs went 1-5 over a six-game stretch — like the one they are currently mired in — Andy Reid and company rattled off 10 wins in a row. It was one of the most impressive in-season turnarounds in years. The expectation should be that Reid can find a way to do it again, no matter how bleak things look right now. The Jets are a below-average football team — they only had one Pro Bowler a year ago and zero All-Pros — and this is a team the Chiefs should beat if they’re closer to their September form than the way they looked during their winless November. If the Chiefs lose this game there’s no way you can pick them to win next week against Oakland.

Nice job Topeka (as usual) I decided I am going to watch the game tonight. Who I'm kidding. I proclaimed I wasn't going to view the Chiefs/Jets game last week as I was so upset about the Bills game. I'll get the game on regular TV as we receive the NYC main channels here in Istanbul. If we dump this game, I'm going to lose it! Fingers crossed my KC Chiefs friends. Let's get this done tonight!
