The Chiefs’ young players will have an opportunity to show what they can do on Sunday
It’s been 17 weeks since the Kansas City Chiefs spoiled the Super Bowl celebration in New England with a victory on opening night.
They’ve tallied a divvy of records, eight more wins and a second-consecutive AFC West title since that night, and with their postseason position locked in place, several of the Chiefs’ reserves will have an opportunity to show what they can do in this weekend’s regular season finale against the Denver Broncos.
That includes rookie quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who will make his professional debut under center on Sunday.
“Every snap that he gets is a valuable snap for him whenever he has that chance of getting in there,” said Head Coach Andy Reid. “It’s invaluable and, fortunately, we’re in a situation where we can do that.”
Mahomes’ debut gives starting quarterback Alex Smith a much-deserved week off following the best statistical season of his career. Smith finished the campaign with a league-high 104.7 passer rating while setting career bests in passing yards (4,042) and touchdowns (26).
Smith will have a chance to moonlight as a coach this weekend as he shifts his focus towards the postseason.
“We have a quarterback in Alex that understands it and who is having a phenomenal year,” Reid said. “It’s an MVP caliber year, so he understands the situation and this won’t detour anything from what he’s doing the remainder of the season.”
And though Mahomes’ role changed this week, his preparation did not.
“Every single week this entire season, I’ve been trying to prepare like I was the starter to try and learn and make sure I was ready for any moment,” Mahomes said. “This week I’m doing the same thing and preparing to go out and produce on the field.”
Mahomes will look to continue the Chiefs’ recent stretch of dominance over their division rival.
Kansas City has won four straight over Denver, scoring 29-plus points in each and winning by an average of two touchdowns.
What makes those numbers all the more impressive is that they’ve come against one of the best defenses in all of football.
The Broncos posted a top-five scoring defense in each of the last two seasons, and though they’ve slipped a bit this year, Denver still features some of the top defensive playmakers in the league.
That presents an intriguing challenge in Mahomes’ first shot as a professional.
“Let’s go there and do everything we can to get that win - that’s number one,” said Offensive Coordinator Matt Nagy. “Let’s get the ball out on time with your feet and your timing. Protect the football - the guy in front of him right now, number 11, is one of the best in the league at doing that and you win football games when you protect the football.”
Though Nagy is still looking for Mahomes to utilize what made him so successful in the college ranks – just in a way that fits the professional game.
“He’s a dynamic playmaker, he’s proven that his whole college career,” Nagy said. “Now you’re playing with the big boys and you have to understand that you have to play within the system, but still let your talent show. There’s a balance there, but how are you going to transition into that balance?”
Mahomes will attempt to achieve that balance with a cast of younger players around him, many of which are also experiencing their first real shot in the NFL.
“To have a chance to contribute to the team is definitely a special opportunity,” said rookie wide receiver Jehu Chesson. “It’s a big concrete step for us and it’s a testament to all the work we’ve put in so far in our careers. It’s just an opportunity go out there, have fun and make some plays for our team.”
It’s a luxury many teams don’t have – the chance to provide young players with real experience without suffering the consequences in the standings.
“There’s as much value on the experience to be able to play in a regular season game against a defense in the National Football League than anything,” Reid said. “I don’t think it can be anything but a plus for them.”
It remains to be seen which defensive starters will have the afternoon off, but whoever is on the field will be facing an inexperienced passer in Broncos’ quarterback Paxton Lynch.
Denver’s first round pick back in 2016, Lynch has played in just one game this season, starting in a Week 12 loss to Oakland. Lynch completed nine of 14 passes for 41 yards and an interception in the game before leaving with an ankle injury.
Lynch is vying to be Denver’s quarterback of the future, and he’ll have a chance to make his case on Sunday.
“He’s strong armed, a big man and he’s got great arm talent,” said Defensive Coordinator Bob Sutton. “He’s very mobile for a big man. He’s got that talent going for him and I think he’s going to be a really good quarterback. He’s like all young players at any position, but particularly that one, in that he just needs the reps. You need a chance to get in there and play.”
Lynch will have that opportunity on Sunday against a Chiefs’ defense that’s been playing its best football of late, even with several new faces working their way in the game.
It’s a fitting way to ring in the new year as a handful of the Chiefs’ youngest players get a shot at fulfilling a lifelong dream against a bitter rival, while a playoff game at Arrowhead inches a week closer.

Game Preview from ESPN.com
Chiefs visit Broncos with Mahomes at QB
DENVER -- The Denver Broncos are writing the closing chapter on a lost season.
The AFC West champion Kansas City Chiefs, locked into the conference's No. 4 playoff seed, are doing what they can to get through the Sunday regular-season finale unscathed in hopes of putting themselves in the best possible position for a deep postseason run.
Those divergent themes were evident in the teams' respective decisions on a starting quarterback. The Chiefs (9-6) will rest Alex Smith and will start his backup, rookie Patrick Mahomes II.
Denver (5-10) is slated to start Paxton Lynch, who hasn't played since sustaining an ankle injury in his first start of the season, Nov. 26 against the Oakland Raiders.
The Chiefs traded up to draft Mahomes with the 10th overall pick this year, and he has served as Smith's backup throughout this season, though he has yet to take a snap in a game. Besides trying to safeguard Smith in advance of the playoffs, Kansas City coach Andy Reid said he believed it was important to take advantage of the opportunity to get Mahomes some snaps in a game.
"We're in a position where we can do that," Reid said. "It gives the kid some experience. That's the reason. Listen, the Broncos are a good football team, real good defense. It'll be a great experience for him to go against that crew."
Mahomes will become the first rookie quarterback to start for the Chiefs in a non-strike game since 1979, when Steve Fuller did it. Mahomes said he is anxious to finish out the regular season on a positive note.
"The biggest thing for me is just to expect to go out there and win in any way possible," Mahomes said.
Reid is considering resting other starters, on both sides of the ball, or limiting their play, but he did not expect to make final decisions on the positions involved until later in the week.
"There's a chance I rotate some guys," he said.
Lynch, a second-year pro, is a former first-round pick whose playing opportunities have been limited by injuries. He is among three players who have started at quarterback for the Broncos this season. The others are Brock Osweiler and Trevor Siemian, who is finishing the season on injured reserve because of a shoulder injury.
None of the three established himself as the future Broncos' starter, and the quality of quarterback play has been a glaring issue for Denver throughout a desultory offensive campaign.
Lynch, though, has never had a sustained opportunity to play, and seeing him perform in an otherwise meaningless finale can provide general manager John Elway and other members of the Broncos brass something of a yardstick as they move into the offseason intent on resolving Denver's quarterback shortcomings.
Lynch knows he will be under a microscope against the Chiefs, and he accepts the challenge.
"I feel ready for Sunday, and I'm ready to go out there and play," Lynch said.
Broncos coach Vance Joseph said he likes what he has seen of Lynch, who has been getting the first-team practice repetitions this week.
"He practiced well," Joseph said. "He threw the ball well. He was in control of the offense, so that was good to see."
One bright spot for the Broncos heading into the finale of an otherwise disappointing season is the chance for C.J. Anderson to become the 21st 1,000-yard rusher in team history.
Anderson enters the Sunday game 54 yards shy of the milestone. He could become the first Denver running back since Knowshon Moreno in 2013 to hit the 1,000-yard mark.
"It's important for our football team, especially with the work C.J. put in in the offseason, coming in in great shape and staying healthy for the full season for the first time in his career," Joseph said. "Winning is our first priority, but any personal milestone like that, it's important for the player and the football team."
Meanwhile, the Broncos again could be without wide receivers Emmanuel Sanders (ankle) and Cody Latimer (thigh). They both continue to miss practice time, as does defensive lineman Zach Kerr (ankle).
Linebacker Tamba Hali (knee) and defensive tackle Bennie Logan (knee) missed practice time this week with the Chiefs.

Chiefs-Broncos scouting report, key players to watch, and a prediction
From The Kansas City Star
Red Zone
The Chiefs and NFL by beat writer Terez Paylor
DECEMBER 29, 2017 10:36 AM
The scheme
Head coach: Vance Joseph (5-10) is in his first year on the job. Joseph, 45, is a former quarterback and defensive back from Colorado who played a few years with the Jets and Colts an undrafted free agent. He spent six years on the college level as a graduate assistant and defensive backs coach at Colorado, Wyoming and Bowling Green before he was hired to be an assistant defensive backs coach with the 49ers. He was promoted to defensive backs coach the next year and served in the same position through 2010. In 2011, he joined the Texans in the same role and in 2014, he joined the Dolphins in the same capacity. He was hired to be the Miami Dolphins’ defensive coordinator in 2016. Joseph’s defense ranked fourth in the NFL on third downs (36.2 percent) while forcing the sixth-most negative plays (107) in the league as the Dolphins won nine of their final 11 regular-season games and he emerged as a legitimate head-coaching candidate. In January, he was hired to be the Broncos’ 16th head coach, replacing Gary Kubiak.
Offense: Bill Musgrave, 50, was promoted to offensive coordinator in November following the firing of Mike McCoy. After an illustrious career as a quarterback at the University of Oregon, Musgrave was drafted in the fourth round by the Cowboys. He then embarked on a seven-year career that saw him serve as a quarterbacks coach and/or offensive coordinator across several stops, including Carolina, Philadelphia, Jacksonville, Atlanta, Washington and Minnesota. Musgrave was Oakland’s offensive coordinator from 2015 to 2016 before he was relieved of his duties by Jack Del Rio. He landed with the Broncos as a quarterbacks coach before his most recent promotion. Denver ranks 19th in total offense (323.3 yards per game), 21st in passing offense (207.1) and 13th in rushing offense (116.1). Denver is passing the ball 58 percent of the time, and using play-action at a 21 percent clip (tied for eighth in the NFL), according to Football Outsiders.
Defense: Joe Woods, 47, is in his first year as Denver’s defensive coordinator. Woods was promoted from defensive backs coach in February, following Joseph’s hire. With Woods coaching the Broncos’ defensive backs, Denver finished first in the NFL in pass defense in both 2015 (199.6 yards per game) and 2016 (185.8). The Broncos also held opponents to the lowest completion percentage (57.8), yards per attempt (5.99) and passer rating (74.3) during that stretch. Before his promotion, Woods spent 13 seasons as a defensive backs coach with Denver, Oakland, Minnesota and Tampa Bay. Woods still runs the 3-4 defense the Broncos executed to perfection under Wade Phillips, who left this offseason to guide the Rams’ defense. The Broncos have fared well, ranking second in the league in total defense (284.1 yards per game), fourth in pass defense (196.1) and 20th in sacks (31). The Broncos’ run defense ranks third in the league (88.0 yards per game). Teams have opted to stay away from play-action against this team, though they are surrendering 8.1 yards per play-action attempt (26th in the league) according to FO.
Special teams: Brock Olivo, 41, is in his first year as Denver’s special-teams coach. The former Missouri star spent five years as a running back in the NFL with the Detroit Lions before turning to coaching. He spent two years at Coastal Carolina as a running backs coach and special-teams assistant before landing with the Chiefs as an assistant special-teams coach in 2014. Olivo then spent three years under one of the league’s top gurus, Dave Toub, before landing his current position with the Broncos. Kicker Brandon McManus has made 23 of 31 field-goal attempts, and his conversion percentage of 74 ranks 27th in the league among kickers with at least 10 attempts. Punter Riley Dixon has dropped 21 of 69 punts inside the 20, 26th in the league. Denver ranks 14th in kickoff returns (22.2 yards per return) and 17th in punt returns (8.6). It also ranks 29th in kick-return coverage (24.1) and 22nd in punt-return coverage (9.1). They’ve surrendered both a punt-return touchdown and a kick-return touchdown.
