It was 50 years ago that the Kansas City Chiefs were crowned champions of the football universe following their victory over the Minnesota Vikings in Super Bowl IV.

The Chiefs entered the game as heavy underdogs - with many still viewing the National Football League as superior to its counterparts in the American Football League despite the AFL-NFL merger – but Kansas City silenced that notion once and for all with a convincing, 16-point victory over Minnesota and the legendary “Purple People Eaters” defense.

Amazingly, the Chiefs and Vikings have met just 11 times since that original matchup. The two squads simply don’t line up across from one another very often – doing so just four times since 2000 – but they’re set to clash once again this weekend at Arrowhead Stadium in a re-match of their historic meeting a half-century ago.



The game represents a chance for Kansas City to get back on track following a close loss to the Green Bay Packers last week, but at 6-2, the Vikings present quite the challenge on both sides of the ball.

It begins with Minnesota’s defense, which all these years later would likely make the Purple People Eaters proud. The Vikings are yielding just 16.5 points-per-game this season, which ranks as the third-best scoring defense in the NFL behind only the undefeated New England Patriots and San Francisco 49ers. That defensive effort is led by three players that earned Pro Bowl selections a year ago – those being linebacker Anthony Barr, defensive end Danielle Hunter and safety Harrison Smith – not to mention linebacker Eric Kendricks, who has 68 tackles this season, and defensive end Everson Griffen, whose 13 quarterback hits match Hunter for the team-lead.



At every level, the group rounds out as one of the more talented defenses in the league.

“They've played quite a little bit of time together, so there's some continuity there,” said Head Coach Andy Reid. “There are not a lot of things that you are going to trick them on. They have a pretty good feel for things. Before [Vikings’ Head Coach Mike Zimmer] became a head coach, he was one of the best defensive coordinators in the league, so they have a good scheme.”

It certainly provides a tough task for Kansas City on Sunday, especially if quarterback Patrick Mahomes isn’t able to play. The reigning league MVP is listed as questionable heading into the matchup, but Mahomes’ status hasn’t changed backup Matt Moore’s preparation throughout the week.

“[It’s the] same thing. You go out, you prepare, you get ready to play a game, you value the reps you get and use those to your advantage. You move forward with that mindset,” Moore said. “Again, this is nothing new. I’ve been in this situation before. I’m used to it. You just go practice and get yourself better for Sunday.”

Hardman will be joined by fellow pass-catchers Tyreek Hill, Travis Kelce, Sammy Watkins and the rest of the offense no matter who is lining up at quarterback, countering Minnesota’s heralded defense with arguably the top assortment of offensive weapons in the NFL.

“I feel like we have the players here to compete,” Watkins said. “They’re a good team, but we’re a good team too, so we [need to] go out there and put a complete game together – which we haven’t done yet – and play our best and move forward. There are still eight more games left and we’re not out of anything.”

Of course, the Vikings have some playmakers on offense of their own.

That list really begins with tailback Dalvin Cook, who leads the NFL in yards from scrimmage (1,116) and ranks third in touchdowns (9) while averaging 5.9 yards-per-carry on the ground.

“When he gets the ball, he’s never down. All 11 guys have to rally to the ball and gang-tackle, because he’s never down,” said cornerback Charvarius Ward. “He’s always breaking tackles and he’s fast – he’s just a good player – so we all have to rally to the ball to get him down.”

In addition to Cook, Minnesota features a slew of weapons offensively available to quarterback Kirk Cousins, who currently ranks third in the NFL in passer rating (115.2). Cousins wasn’t overly impressive statistically to begin the season, but in his last four games, the veteran passer leads the NFL in touchdowns (10) and ranks second in yards (1,262).



Cousins’ top target during that stretch has been wide receiver Stefon Diggs, whose 497 yards through the air over that same span rank second in the league. Fellow wide receiver Adam Thielen also represents as big a threat as any, but it’s worth mentioning that the sixth-year receiver is listed as questionable headed into the game with a hamstring injury.

Regardless, while stopping the Vikings’ attack won’t be easy, the Chiefs are eyeing an opportunity to halt their two-game skid at Arrowhead Stadium. Kansas City is 25-8 at home over their last 33 contests, and despite suffering some significant injuries on both sides of the ball of late – including losing Mahomes for at least one game – the locker room is eager to right the ship.

“We need to play better whether it’s home or away. We have to coach better and play better. That’s what you do as a player and that’s what you do as a coach,” Reid said. “You go back through, you study those things, you get down to what exactly the issues were and you fix them. That’s what we did this week and worked hard on.”

Kansas City will put that preparation to the test this weekend.

Chiefs-Vikings Preview

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Chiefs aren't the only ones who hope Patrick Mahomes plays against Minnesota on Sunday.

Vikings counterpart Kirk Cousins does, too.

"At the end of the day, I just want to see players healthy, out on the field. You want to play against their best," Cousins said. "You don't necessarily want free passes on anything."

Then again, Cousins isn't the one who would be tasked with slowing down the league's MVP on Sunday.

And if figuring out a way to stop Mahomes -- who has been recovering from a dislocated kneecap -- wasn't a big enough task for Vikings coach Mike Zimmer and his staff, the will he-or-won't he question compounds problems. Backup quarterback Matt Moore, who played well in the Chiefs' 31-24 loss to Green Bay, is different enough from Mahomes that they require significant tweaks to the game plan.

"I think you'll have calls based on the offense that you feel good about. Then you're going to have other calls based on that quarterback, other calls based on this quarterback," Zimmer said. "So you kind of put together your base plan and then you have plans if he plays and if he doesn't."

There is no question who will be under center for Minnesota (6-2) when it travels to Arrowhead Stadium for the first time since 2011 and tries to pull off what the Packers did a week ago.

After hearing plenty of doubters, Cousins has been on a tear the past four weeks, putting up a rating of 137.1 that leads the league. He also leads the NFL in yards-per attempt.

It helps his cause to have running back Dalvin Cook, the league's leading rusher, and wide receiver Stefon Diggs. And he also could have Adam Thielen back on the field after the wide receiver hurt his hamstring against Detroit and was held out of last week's win over Washington.

"If it comes down to it, we've just got to go score points," Cook said. "Don't worry about what they do. Don't worry how many points they score. We've just got to go out and execute every drive that we're out there and try to get some points out of every drive."

That could be important given the potent playmakers the Chiefs also have on offense: running back LeSean McCoy, wide receiver Tyreek Hill and Sammy Watkins and tight end Travis Kelce.

They'll be ready regardless who is under center for them.

"It's hard to say they're not at the top of the list," Moore said, when asked about supporting casts he's played with over 10 years spent in Carolina and Miami. "I've played with a lot of good guys over the years, and been fortunate to have great teammates, but you can't overlook these guys."

Or count them out, even if their biggest star is sidelined another week.

"We'll see how it goes," Chiefs coach Andy Reid said. "I'm taking it day by day here. I'm going to watch them do their thing and just see how they do."

DEFENDING HOME

The Chiefs have lost all three games at Arrowhead Stadium this year, following a strange league-wide trend of teams struggling at home. Of course, their opponents have been two first-place teams in Indianapolis and Green Bay and a second-place team in Houston.

Those three have a combined record of 17-6 heading into this week's games.

"We know what we have to do. We know what we need to improve," Chiefs wide receiver Mecole Hardman said. "It's our domain. It's our home. We've got to get back on track here."

BRINGING THE BLITZ

The Chiefs have 13 sacks for 128 yards over the past two games, and an increase in pressure dialed up by new defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo has been a big reason for it.

"When you start getting 16, 17, 18 blitzes in a row, it could be their identity," Zimmer said.

Cousins historically performs well on plays facing five or more pass rushers.

"It obviously keeps the running back in a lot," Cook said. "But we've got to identify guys and pick it up and give Kirk a chance to get the ball to these playmakers."

ANDY AND MIKE

Zimmer and Reid have competed against each other for decades, going back to 1986 as Big Sky foes when Zimmer was defensive coordinator at Weber State and Reid was offensive line coach at Northern Arizona.

They also faced off frequently as NFC East rivals when Zimmer was defensive coordinator in Dallas and Reid the head coach in Philadelphia. More recently, they've gotten to know each other in offseason meetings as fellow members of the NFL's coaching committee.

When Reid called plays for the Eagles, they ran a pure West Coast system relying on shorter, efficient throws, but over time he has embraced a wide-open, run-pass option scheme.

"He's always been a hard guy to defend," Zimmer said. "I think he's adjusted with the times."

PLAYOFF RACE

It's not too early to start looking at the standings, particularly for a pair of teams that are in the running for division titles, home-field advantage and first-round playoff byes.

"If you want to be a good team, you've got to beat a good team. That's what it comes down to at the end of the day," Diggs said. "That's what we prepare for, that's what we are trying to do at all times. They definitely are a contender. They've been well for the past couple of years."

RADAR GUN

One big debate in the Kansas City locker room this week was whether Hardman, who ran a 4.2-second 40-yard dash at the NFL combine, is faster than Hill, widely considered the league's fastest man.

Hardman admitted he probably would lose over 40 yards, but he thought he could win over 100.

"I'm really fast. Mecole is really fast," said Watkins, who is also a 4.3-second 40-yard guy, before breaking into a wide grin. "But Tyreek is beating all of us."
