Kidney Failure Claims Life Of Gatorade Inventor

-- The man who invented Gatorade and sparked the multimillion-dollar sports drink industry has died.Dr. Robert Cade died Tuesday of kidney failure. He was 80.The University of Florida announced his death.

While there, he and other researchers created Gatorade in 1965 to help the school's football players replace carbohydrates and electrolytes lost through sweat while playing in swamp-like heat.

Coaches found players began to "wilt" after playing in the heat and came to a group of researchers including Cade, Dr. Dana Shires, Dr. H. James Free, and Dr. Alejandro de Quesada for a solution, according to Gatorade's official Web site.After the introduction of the drink, the University of Florida Gators started winning, and they finished their season up 7-4.

The first Gatorade customers came following the Gators' success at the 1967 Orange Bowl, when coaches from the University of Richmond and Miami of Ohio ordered Gatorade for their teams.In the summer of 1969, the Kansas City Chiefs were so impressed with the "Gator coach's aid" that they continued fueling their players with it, which led to a Super Bowl IV victory, according to Gatorade's official Web site.

Today, Gatorade is the official sports drink of more than 70 Division 1 colleges, and, according to Gatorade's official Web site, it is now the official sports drink of the NBA, AVP, PGA, Major League Baseball, Major League Soccer and other professional organizations and teams.
