Default The first of many stupid questions

I've only been a football fan for a few years and I never played at any level. Would someone please explain what a cover 2 is that I can understand it?

I believe it is putting your defenses cornerbacks in zone coverage, and making your safeties give up big plays down the middle of the field.

Ask Herm, because he has a bizarre sense of how to play defense after being a defensive back.

I don't think he has followed the game much since he played...

It is really just a defensive play, that has been reassigned as the name of a defensive scheme. It is a "base" 4-3 defense, that uses a zone-coverage, with two safeties covering deep. Hence the name "cover-2".

So why are our safeties getting burned so bad deep???

What exactly are we playing now... cover 0?

Much like the 4-3 or 3-4 with the advent of zone blitzes, and other plays, the Cover 2 has a lot of variations. Tampa Bay for example runs what is commonly referred to as the Tampa 2, and they use a lot of DB blitzes, and they will often drop Derrick Brooks (weakside LB) back into the deep slot and blitz the SS. Still a Cover 2, but the 2nd deep man is a LB instead of a safety.
