Default Good news/Bad news for Denver

    Per Rocky Mountain News
    By Lee Rasizer

All expectations are enigmatic defensive tackle Shaun Rogers will be gone from Detroit by the time the trading period begins at 10 p.m. Thursday.

The Broncos are among the suitors aggressively pursuing the two-time Pro Bowl selection, and at one point Monday, they appeared to perhaps be on the verge of acquiring the 6-foot-4 interior defender. But other teams continue making their pitches. And now the Broncos don't appear to be in the clear.

The Miami Dolphins, Atlanta Falcons, New Orleans Saints and Tampa Bay Buccaneers are trying to fortify their front fours. And the Lions aggressively are marketing Rogers around the league before the start of the new NFL calendar.

Rogers' agent, Kennard McGuire, said he wouldn't confirm or deny any trade speculation regarding his client.

What is apparent in league circles is Rogers will be playing elsewhere next season. His battles - with weight, in particular - apparently have worn on Detroit coach Rod Marinelli to the point where a change of scenery would benefit both parties. And there are enough suitors for Rogers' services that compensation should be sufficient.

Rogers, 28, had his best game last season against the Broncos, earning NFC defensive Player of the Week honors with 2 1/2 sacks and a 66-yard interception return for a touchdown. He also had a career-high seven sacks, but he faded during the final eight games as Detroit went 1-7.

The Broncos also are one of the teams pursuing New York Jets defensive tackle Dewayne Robertson.

ETC.: Broncos coach Mike Shanahan is expected to make a public comment in the next couple days that will vociferously deny a Yahoo.com report regarding alleged spying practices "several years ago." The story contained a short item on the team that maintained the NFL had been aware the Broncos taped San Diego practices, prompting the Chargers to increase security, but the league considered it a team matter. . . . The Broncos are attempting to work out a long-term arrangement with safety Hamza Abdullah, who's scheduled to become a restricted free agent this week, in lieu of a tender offer. The sides were scheduled to meet Monday night in Indianapolis. . . . The agent for kicker Jason Elam spoke with Broncos general manager Ted Sundquist on Thursday, but no numbers were exchanged. And so far, no face-to- face meeting between Elam and Shanahan is on tap. The 15-year veteran is the Broncos' top in-house free agent. . . . An Internet report linking receiver Javon Walker to the Dallas Cowboys seemingly makes little sense, given Walker was having difficulty playing second fiddle to Brandon Marshall and Dallas' No. 1 is Terrell Owens.

Hopefully Rogers doesn't show up for games against us. He's that type of player - only shows up and plays well for certain games.

The key to taking Rogers out of the game is sustaining a couple of good drives early. The guy is oversized and out of shape, if you keep him on the field he becomes ineffective.

The 49ers own my heart, but the Chiefs will always hold a better than neutral spot for giving my favorite player a place to leave with grace...
