It looks more and more like a Draft day deal for Trent, or the possibility that he stays in KC.

Savage, speaking at a draft preview for Browns Backers at Cleveland Browns Stadium, said a trade for veteran Chiefs quarterback Trent Green was unlikely. He had preliminary discussions with Chiefs GM Carl Peterson a few weeks ago.
“There are so many steps on the staircase. We took one step and everybody took it to the limit,” Savage said. “It doesn’t seem like something that’s likely to happen.”
But Savage wouldn’t rule it out.
“It’s not going to occur in the next couple of days,” he said of Green being traded to any team, most likely the Miami Dolphins. “It’ll take weeks and maybe even happen on draft day.”

But why? It makes no sense. Draft day and he misses out on all the pre-training camp camps. It would seem worth it to pay a little bit more to get that extra time with him...
You can only have one favorite team. There are no "second favorites".

Green is a veteran that does not need to be at ANY pre-training camp. The reasoning expressed by Browns' GM Savage is the same that can and will be told by Detroit, Miami and even Minnesota. Why trade for Green unless Brady Quinn is in the bag? Trent Green no matter which team he ends up with, will only be a caretaker and teacher. If these teams needed a starting QB so bad why then did they all pass on Carr? Green is Quinns mentor period. It will be a draft day trade only.

I'm guessing the longer this drags on, the less value we get for Green. If he's not traded on draft day, he'll likely stay in KC which isn't good for our cap situation.

Agreed, if a trade is not completed prior to the draft or during the draft Green's value drops greatly. However, the Chiefs could still traded him after the draft for a conditional 2008 draft pick, or retain him or even release him after 1 June thus spreading the cap hit out over the 2007 and 2008 cap season.

I would like to see Green retire and become QB coach.
