Could Feely be the Chiefs' answer as kicker?

The Chiefs' prayers for a place kicker may have been answered.
The Miami Dolphins today released veteran kicker Jay Feely, a year after he set the team's single-season record for field-goal percentage.
Feely, an eight-year veteran, made 21 of 23 field goals last season with a long of 53, and would appear to be an upgrade over the two kickers the Chiefs have in camp, rookie Connor Barth and Nick Novak, who has 16 games of NFL experience.
Feely, 32, missed Miami's pre-season opener last weekend against Tampa Bay because of a groin strain. Why not bring him to camp, get him healthy and let him compete with Barth or Novak?
The Dolphins, under new management with Bill Parcells, apparently have elected to go with rookie free agent Dan Carpenter, who made field goals of 41 and 49 yards in Miami's 17-6 pre-season loss to Tampa Bay on Saturday.
Feely has made 80.8 percent of his attempts during his seven-year career, and has improved in each of the last three seasons.
In 2005, he made 35 of 42 attempts (83.3) with a long of 52; and in 2006, he was 23 of 27 (85.2) with a long of 47 for the New York Giants. Kicking in the winds of Giants Stadium would be good experience for kicking in Arrowhead.

Chiefs Camp Buzz: Kicker Feely could get a look

    Chiefs could look at Feely
The Chiefs may eventually attempt to sign free-agent kicker Jay Feely, who was released Monday by Miami. While Nick Novak and Connor Barth have kicked field goals well in training camp, the Chiefs aren’t at ease with the idea of using a kicker without significant NFL experience.
That wouldn’t be an issue with Feely, who has kicked for Atlanta, the Giants and Miami. While with the Giants, Feely worked with Mike Priefer, now the Chiefs’ special teams coach.
“We know what he’s capable of doing,” coach Herm Edwards said. “We’re going to continue to look at our guys. We’re going to let these guys kick.
“We’ll have to wait and see. Nothing is out of the realm of trying to get better.”
Feely’s agent, Glenn Schwartzman, said the Chiefs had yet to contact him regarding Feely.
    Shortage of linebackers
Oliver Hoyte, acquired by the Chiefs on waivers from Dallas in the spring, began training camp as a fullback.
He was their starting middle linebacker on Tuesday, having switched positions early in camp.
Injuries have prevented Donnie Edwards and Napoleon Harris from practicing for several days, and neither will play in Saturday night’s game against Arizona at Arrowhead Stadium.
Starting middle linebacker Pat Thomas was mostly a bystander in practice because of a sore finger, though Herm Edwards indicated Thomas might practice today and should play against the Cardinals.
That left eight healthy linebackers and one, Aden Durde, is with the Chiefs as a special European exemption because he was assigned by the NFL.
Hoyte played four seasons as a linebacker at North Carolina State. He was moved to fullback by the Cowboys but was getting a long look at linebacker Tuesday.
“That’s a saving grace right there,” Herm Edwards said, thankful Hoyte was playing his new position. “Then we really would have been short. It’s a struggle.”

What you need to know about ...
    THE OFFENSE
Branden Albert was walking without crutches. … Nick Novak was three of four and Connor Barth two of four in the field-goal contest. Novak made kicks from 40, 45 and 55 yards but was wide right from 50. Barth was good from 50 and 55 but missed wide right from the shorter distances. … Jamaal Charles, who had a problem early in camp with fumbles, dropped another one. Later, after catching a short pass, he slipped on grass still damp from a morning rain when he had some open field ahead. … Larry Johnson failed to score on three runs from inside the 5 in a goal-line drill.
    THE DEFENSE
Starting defensive end Turk McBride (hamstring), starting linebacker Pat Thomas (finger) and reserve defensive end Brian Johnston (groin) dressed for practice but did little. … Brandon Carr broke up a pair of long passes, one for Dwayne Bowe and the other for Maurice Price in the end zone. On the latter play, Carr wasn’t fooled by a play fake. … DaJuan Morgan made a number of plays, including an interception of a Tyler Thigpen overthrow.
    INJURY REPORT
Wide receiver Kevin Robinson (knee), offensive lineman Branden Albert (foot), defensive lineman Trevor Johnson (concussion), linebackers Donnie Edwards (hamstring) and Napoleon Harris (knee) and safety Jon McGraw (shoulder) did not practice.
    TODAY’S SCHEDULE
The Chiefs will practice in the afternoon.

In my opinion the Chiefs have time to wait and see about this... I bet he will still be available late in the preseason if we want to pick him up.

I agree. We are still evaluating the two K's we already have.
Thanks for all the yards, TDs, and memories, Priest!

Personally I am rooting for Barth, Novak sounds decent but I really want someone all ours, not someone who someone else released, even though he could be great some team didnt think he was good enough for them. Didnt we do that last year with Dave Rayner and we all see how well that worked out. I dunno, but we will see.

We were forced into getting Rayner though. By the time we knew Medlock was a flop, we didn't have a lot of options.

With Hermie-ball all we need is a punter.

This year I have this feeling we will rely less on the punter and much more on the kickoff specialist and extra point kicker. Croyle, LJ, DBowe, Gonzo, and Jamaal Charles share league MVP with a special mention to Will Franklin, Maurice Price, and Conner Barth.

In addition ESPN and the NFL network cant quit talking about how they all ruled the Chiefs out to how they went from 4-12 to winning the Super Bowl and did it with the youngest team in the league.
