Default AN AFC PREVIEW – AFC South

    By Ron Borges

    AFC SOUTH

    1. Indianapolis Colts – The Colts already had plenty of holes to fill on defense before an unexpected one popped up along the offensive line which, if it remains unfilled, may give the defending champions more to worry about. Left tackle Tarik Glenn announced his retirement a week before training camp opened, a move that may be an attempt to force the Colts into granting him a long-term extension of a contract that is up at the end of the season. Indianapolis had already prepared for his probable departure next year by drafting Arkansas’ Tony Ugoh on the second round but if he played this year it was supposed to be at guard. Now, unless Glenn returns, a battle looms to find someone to protect quarterback Peyton Manning’s blind side...

    2. Jacksonville Jaguars – The Jaguars will go as far as quarterback Byron Leftwich takes them. Exactly how far that will be is open to debate because the Jags may yet land free agent Daunte Culpepper to replace him. It’s no secret that Leftwich and head coach Jack Del Rio are not on the same page. If it was up to Del Rio one wonders if they’d be on the same team...

    3. Houston Texans – Head coach Gary Kubiak remade the face of the offense this offseason by giving up on quarterback David Carr and running back Domanick Williams (aka Davis) and replacing them with former Falcon backup quarterback Matt Schaub and ex-Pro Bowl running back Ahman Green. Now all he needs is to find an offensive line who can keep them both off the ground, which was the problem Carr and Williams (aka Davis) faced the past few years...

    4. Tennessee Titans – How much can one guy be expected to do for his team? That’s what quarterback Vince Young may be wondering.
Young was remarkable once he took over the Titans’ offense, leading them to wins in six of their final seven games and four fourth quarter comebacks. While he was nothing short of breathtaking he needs help for the Titans to continue to improve and it doesn’t appear to be there yet unless disappointing LenDale White blossoms now that he’ll not be held back by a holdout and has room to run with the departure of Travis Henry.
