The Chiefs have signed somebody, but right now it's a mystery
The Chiefs have scheduled a 4:30 p.m. news conference today to announce the signing of a player. In keeping with the team's offseason theme, that player's identity for now remains a secret.
Let's play a game of Kansas City Clue.
OK, so we all know the team's needs are many, but what do they need most? A linebacker, but we're thinking that they hope to address that concern in the draft with the selection of Aaron Curry. They need a pass rusher, but there aren't many big-time, splash players left on the free agent market. No, for the team to schedule a conference call, this has to be fairly big. Bigger than the signing of receiver C.J. Jones, anyway.
Speaking of receivers, that could be it. There are two receivers looking for new homes, former St. Louis wideout Torry Holt and former Seattle receiver Bobby Engram.
Wait, but that's not the team's top need. But what's left? Offensive line? Orlando Pace is still lurking out there on the free-agent market, and the former top overall pick certainly would make a splash. Plus, the signing of an offensive tackle would open some future options for the Chiefs, such as drafting a pass rusher in the third round instead of continuing to address a sore need on Kansas City's offensive line.
So those are our three guesses, with Pace making the biggest impact but not necessarily the most likely candidate to land with the Chiefs. But it would make a lot of sense and would be the team's most impressive free-agent signing yet.*
*If this proves to be the case, we'll address the Branden Albert ramifications in a later post.
We'll all know at 4:30 p.m., but here are the unofficial Kansas City Star odds:
1. Pace, 4-1
2. Holt, 5-1
3. Engram, 6-1
Who are we forgetting? Who was seen last night in the parlor with a candlestick -- or an ink pen -- in his hand?
