The Kansas City Chiefs recently kicked off a new season of games at its youth-specific football field. This spring, the YMCA of the Greater Kansas City is partaking in flag football games on the pristine Sprinturf youth football field. Erected in the shadows of Arrowhead Stadium, this field is made possible via the Chiefs Children’s Fund, the Hunt family and the NFL Youth Football Funding Board. It provides area youth teams with an opportunity unlike any other in the metro area. Youth games and practices take place on this field during both the spring and fall seasons mere footsteps the Chiefs very own practice fields.
This marks the first time that the youth field has been available for spring youth football activities but it is already a hit with the YMCA’s participants. The youth-specific football field is just the second of its kind located at an NFL team’s official training facility. Between the state-of-the-art playing surface and field’s location, it continues to enable all youth to dream big and feel as though they are a part of the Chiefs themselves.
Having just completed its first year of existence, the field saw immediate use shortly after it was officially opened during a ribbon cutting ceremony in September 2008. In all, the field was utilized for youth football activities in 50 of the 58 available days. 206 teams played on the field this past autumn, where 4,500 youth football players and coaches participated in games. Throughout the course of the season, approximately 12,450 spectators watched youth teams from such leagues and teams as Bishop Miege High School, Blue Springs Football, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Kansas City, Della Lamb, Heart of America Pop Warner, Kansas City Pop Warner, Police Athletic League, and the YMCA of Greater Kansas City.
The Chiefs efforts to promote and expand youth football are at the forefront of the organization’s focus to improve youth sports and academics in Kansas City. With the addition of this field, the Chiefs organization has now donated $1.75 million for metro-area field refurbishments and/or construction in the past decade. They also help with the up-keep at each field to make sure they are kept in superb condition. In addition to youth-field enhancements, the organization is involved with the Play it Smart, ATLAS & ATHENA, and Heart of a Champion programs, just to name a few.
