CHIEFS CAMP BUZZ: Top draft pick Bowe practices

    Bowe

Bowe debutsRookie wide receiver Dwayne Bowe, the Chiefs’ No. 1 draft pick, practiced with the team for the first time in training camp. Bowe, who didn’t arrive in River Falls until last week because he hadn’t agreed to contract terms, snared a touchdown pass from Casey Printers.

Coach Herm Edwards said Bowe would play some in Thursday night’s preseason game against Miami at Arrowhead Stadium.

“We like what he did in the spring,” Edwards said, “but he’s been away from it, so we’ll bring him along slowly.”

    New receiver in town
Wide receiver Bobby Sippio’s stats from the last four seasons in the Arena League are freakish. The 6-foot-3, 214-pound Sippio caught 354 passes for 5,137 yards and 142 touchdowns.

But the Chiefs aren’t necessarily looking at Sippio, who signed a two-year contract Monday, as a savior.

“We need the legs,” Edwards said, referring to the need to keep his other receivers fresh. “We’ve still got two more weeks, and we’ve got to play games. We need more legs. That’s always good for the receivers.
They’ve run so much they always lose their legs. He’s a guy we kind of liked.”
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT …THE OFFENSE
Tight end Tony Gonzalez injured his knee on one of the last plays of practice. He limped off the field when it was over, but the injury didn’t appear to be serious. …
Edwards said the starters, with Damon Huard at quarterback, should play into the second quarter against Miami. … Justin Medlock made all five of his field-goal attempts from 30, 35, 41, 47 and 55 yards.

    THE DEFENSE
The Chiefs had a different alignment in their nickel defense from what they had shown previously. Rookie nickel back Tyron Brackenridge was replaced by Benny Sapp, who played cornerback with Patrick Surtain shifting to nickel back. … Starting tackle Alfonso Boone, who has been limited because of an injured finger, should play against the Dolphins. … Safety Bernard Pollard came a long way to break up a sideline pass intended for Eddie Kennison in a 2-minute drill.

    INJURY REPORT
Running backs Priest Holmes (conditioning) and Boomer Grigsby (rib), wide receivers Rod Gardner (groin) and Maurice Price (shoulder), tight end Jason Dunn (back), offensive linemen Damion McIntosh (knee), Chris Bober (hip) and George Batiste (knee) and linebackers Kendrell Bell (back) and David Hicks (knee) did not practice.

    TODAY’S SCHEDULE
The Chiefs will hold the summer’s final practice in River Falls before packing their bags and returning to Kansas City on Wednesday.

THAT quarterback is NOT a Pro Bowl quarterback. Never was and never will be.
