Default Source: Chan Gailey fired as offensive coordinator

Source: Chiefs chop Chan Gailey | ProFootballTalk.com

A source within the otherwise impenetrable walls of One Arrowhead Drive advises that the Chiefs have fired this morning offensive coordinator Chan Gailey.

Gailey survived the initial purge of assistant coaches after Todd Haley was hired in February.

It's unclear what has changed between then and now.

Gailey became a star in the mid-1990s, serving as the offensive coordinator of the Steelers. After the 1997 season, he became head coach of the Cowboys, but he lasted only two years.

He then spent two years with the Dolphins before becoming head coach at Georgia Tech, where he recruited and developed receiver Calvin Johnson.

Gailey was fired after the 2007 season, and he joined the Chiefs as a member of Herm Edwards' staff.

In January 2007, former Steelers coach Bill Cowher endorsed Gailey for the job Cowher vacated, suggesting Gailey instead of Ken Whisenhunt and Russ Grimm, who served on Cowher's final staff and who were regarded as finalists for the job.

So look for Gailey to take a year off with pay and to join Cowher if/when Cowher re-enters the NFL next season.
Let me be the first to say that I think this is a bad move if true. I consider Gailey to be a very good offensive coordinator, not to mention the timing is really odd.

But as for Haley, I think he was a poor choice. But I didn't know much about him other than he didn't have a long track record with any one team or coaching staff. He fights with his players. Now, he's starting to micromanage. I think Haley's tactics are good for a young team. His hard-nosed approach is something I like, especially because our team is so young and it shows the young players exactly what is expected of them in the NFL. The problem comes when we're trying to attract free agents or keep the studs we've drafted and developed. By the time this team is mature enough to compete, they're all going to want out if their head coach keeps calling them out and embarrassing them on the sidelines.

I like the approach Haley is taking with this team, but I doubt he's going to be the long-term answer at head coach. Maybe his move to be the OC is just a step toward his permanent position with this team. I have a feeling we're going to be looking for one of those big name head coaches like Cowher this next winter.
Personally I am on the fence with Haley. I am not about to start pointing out all his flaws after 3 preseason games. He is already gotten the team in better shape than Herm eer did. And honestly...what did Chan Gailey ever really do for the team? We were never an offensive juggernaut under him. Not saying he was bad but he was only slightly better than Herm. As for telling that douche bag to f**k off, I dont really give a sh!t if he does not want seasons tickets. I dont want him to have them either. He is probably one of the idiots that boo during the game at Arrowhead too. Fans like him can kiss my as$!!!!

At least he's showing he's just as frustrated as we are and is trying to do something about it. That's more than I can say about Herm. I thought the previous regime was on the right track, but I didn't like that he didn't address obvious problems... like scoring touchdowns.

I just wish SOMEONE would do SOMETHING about the O-line. Turns out EVERYONE is made of glass behind a ****ty line like this one. The only one that can stay healthy is the one that can scramble. Hell, maybe WE should've signed Vick.

I really think this OL will improve. (can't get much worse). The Goff, Allerman, Ndukwe, and Brown signings gotta help - right? As these guys learn each other tendencies they will improve to at least average hopefully before the bye week...

I understand but the timing is crappy and I have lost some of that 'happy step' I got when we got Hailey.
If he is in a pissing match and feels he is the only one who will make the decisions so he bumps Chan out that's fine, but you better know what you're doing. I miss the 90's and watching the Chiefs, especially when they beat the Bills while going to College near Buffalo. It would be me and 7-10 Bills fans with abuse flying all over my apartment. Regardless of who won, and it was usually the Chiefs, (until the playoffs) the team was always competetive. I will never blow off the Chiefs if they have a bad play, game or season but this Coach needs to understand the sense of urgency involved here. Sorry, just a little pissed.

Gailey basically turned water to wine last season after he finally convinced Herm to stop playing the "run the ball 1st, 2nd, and most 3rd downs" offense, Hermball, and tried out the pistol spread with Thigpen. From that point on, Thigpen was one of the most productive QBs in the league and our poor offensive line was able to keep Thigpen on his feet a lot more.

I think if we had this year's defensive front seven last year, we would have easily been .500.

I have a lot of respect for Gailey and think he's gotten the short end of the stick for someone that has always been pretty good. He took the Cowboys to the playoffs both years he was coach, then got fired by King Powertrip himself, Jerry Jones.

Yeah but its all about the W. 6 wins in 2 years and 0-3 in the pre-season - the writing was on the wall...
