    Notable Quotables:
    Chiefs:

“The first and most important thing is elimination of the big play. Especially big plays that are touchdowns because you have no more chances. That sounds simple and basic, but it’s really true. ... [W]e’ve got to do a much better job on our third downs and go. We’re actually doing pretty well on the third and mediums, the low ones, the four and six, but we’re not doing good on that seven to 10 range. Which would be the opposite of what you would think. We’ve got to really hold that down, do a good job and work hard on our ability to rush, ability to pressure, ability to stay tight in coverage. All the things that are tied I think to playing pass defense.”
    --Chiefs Defensive Coordinator Bob Sutton

    Broncos:

“Number one, we've got to quit turning the football over. That's the first thing. Throughout the season that's the one thing that's hurt our team ... and secondly is eliminate penalties."
    --Broncos Offensive Coordinator Mike McCoy

These two have each lost two
    consecutive games, which is con-
    cerning. The Chiefs have defensive
issues, while the Broncos have off-
ensive issues. Something has to give
here. I think the Chiefs defense gets
the best of it. Kansas City takes it.

Chiefs vs. Broncos: Five Things to Watch

    From Chiefs.com

    Posted Oct 29, 2017

Here are a few storylines to keep in mind for Monday’s game

It’s the time of the NFL season that teams begin to separate themselves from those who came into the season with high expectations but will ultimately find themselves attempting to climb a mountain that’s become just too steep, and those whose ultimate goals will stay right at their fingertips.

Furthermore, it’s the way teams handle this pressure of an ever-shrinking margin of error that determines wins and losses every week, and that’s what’ll carry them throughout the second-half of the season.

In the game Monday night between the Kansas City Chiefs (5-2) and Denver Broncos (3-3), there’s no shortage of pressure. Both teams have lost two straight and are hoping a primetime matchup against a rival is just what they need to get back on track.

A Chiefs’ victory gives them a two-game cushion in the NFL’s toughest division—the AFC West, but a Broncos’ victory further clouds a division that could come down to the final week of the season when these two teams meet again on New Year’s Eve in Denver.

It should be a fantastic atmosphere Monday night at Arrowhead Stadium.

Here are five things to watch:

    1. How do the Chiefs bounce back?

The Chiefs have dropped back-to-back games against the Pittsburgh Steelers and Oakland Raiders by a combined seven points.

The games came within five days of one another and included a short week road game 1,800 miles west of Arrowhead Stadium, but there were no excuses being made inside the Chiefs’ locker room this week.

“I think guys were ready for it,” quarterback Alex Smith said. “It was something we obviously knew ahead of time. We don’t care where it is, and we don’t care what the schedule is. We will adjust. We are not going to use that as an excuse.”

“We all have a piece of it,” Chiefs’ coach Andy Reid added. “That’s how we feel about it, and we’ve had some time to look at it, and we’ll see how things go against Denver.”

While it’s not an excuse, there’s no doubt the Chiefs will be a better position physically Monday night considering they’ve had plenty of time to rest.

    2. Kareem Hunt and the rushing offense against the league’s No. 1 defense

The Broncos’ defensive front seven has been the best in the league against the run this year.

Through seven games, the Broncos are allowing a league-low of just 3.0 yards-per-carry to opposing running backs. They’re also the only team in the league that hasn’t yet allowed a rushing touchdown.

“They’ve got a good front; they have (Domata) Peko in the middle, he’s a legitimate nose guard,” Reid explained.

It’s important to note that the Broncos haven’t yet faced the league’s leading rusher in Chiefs’ rookie Kareem Hunt, who has carried the ball 124 times for 717 yards, which averages out to 5.8 yards per carry.

“When he gets into open space, the ability to break tackles,” Smith said of what makes Hunt special. “I think the plays in the pass game. You look at last week, a big block he stepped up and had on the touchdown to Tyreek. That’s a lot on a young back.

“For him to do all those things right now and handle all that stuff says a lot about him, his future is really bright.”

According to Pro Football Focus, Hunt has already broken 37 tackles this year, which is on pace to give him 85 on the year. For perspective, there hasn’t been a running back over the past two years that’s even broken as many as 65 tackles in a season.

    3. How does the defense stack up against a struggling offense?

For the first time in 25 years, the Broncos were shutout during their 21-0 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers last week. They finished with just 251 yards of total offense and turned it over three times.

It’s a performance they’ve been asked about all week.

“It’s a unit issue, and we’ve had some struggles in all areas,” Broncos’ coach Vance Joseph said this week. “From blocking the speed rushers—that’s been an issue from time to time, our run game was really good early on, but it hasn’t been good the last two or three weeks, and that’s been a factor with our issues on offense.

“But our goal is to get back to our formula. Our three wins look the same and our three losses look the same, so we’re looking to get back to doing what we do best.”

In the Broncos’ three wins, they’ve averaged 154 yards on the ground, while they’ve averaged just 75 yards on the ground in their three losses. They’ve also turned it over eight times in those

On the flip side, the Chiefs’ defense has allowed 944 yards and 50 points over the past two weeks.

With the Broncos sounding like they want to establish the run, that’s an area the Chiefs have given up some yards this season, allowing an average of 124.6 per game, which ranks 25th in the NFL.

    4. The matchup to watch—Mitch Schwartz and Von Miller

The right side of the Chiefs’ offensive line will feature a matchup between Chiefs’ right tackle Mitch Schwartz and Broncos’ All-Pro edge rusher Von Miller that’s worth the price of admission alone.

When Schwartz, who has proven to be one of the best in the game over the past five-plus years, signed as a free agent with the Chiefs before last season, it was for matchups like the one Monday night.

Since he came into the league in 2011, Miller leads the NFL with 80.5 sacks.

“He’s just a special talent,” Chiefs’ offensive coordinator Matt Nagy said of Miller. “He’s really good at understanding leverages and studies film really well, and when you have that with his explosiveness, it’s tough.”

Last year, Miller finished the Week 12 matchup against Schwartz with six quarterback hurries, but was held without one in the second matchup in Week 16 at Arrowhead.

That was the only game last season in which Miller didn’t finish with a hurry, and after that game, Schwartz exchanged jerseys with Miller as a show of respect.

In fact, it’s one of the only jerseys Schwartz has and displays in his house from a player who wasn’t a teammate (or family member) at some point.

Earlier this week, Schwartz spoke about the chess match that takes place within the game in going up against an elite pass rusher like Miller.

“As you go against guys, you get a little more familiar with them,” Schwartz explained. “That’s kind of the fun thing—you try one thing and see if it works and if it does, you know he’s going to get to a counter at some point.

“That’s what separates the good rushers from the elite guys in the NFL is having multiple moves and being able to beat you in multiple ways.”

Schwartz isn’t the only guy who is familiar with Miller.

“Seeing these guys at the Pro Bowl, you get an up-close view of what they’re all about and how they play,” Nagy explained. “I’ll never forget how at the end of the Pro Bowl this year, they put [Miller] back in at the end of the fourth quarter and said, ‘Von, go in there and go get a sack.’

“He did a spin move, got the sack, game over. I’ll never forget that.”

    5. Will we see the return of a few Chiefs?

The Chiefs could see the return of a few key players Monday night as starting center Mitch Morse, right guard Laurent Duvernay-Tardif, and cornerback Steven Nelson all returned to practice this week after missing time with various injuries.

Chiefs’ defensive coordinator Bob Sutton spoke this week about Nelson.

“I think they have a pretty good handle on his physical situation, and he looks pretty good,” Sutton explained. “Now, it’s just more about reaction, his comfort in getting back and seeing things. That’s probably always the hardest thing to judge because you’re still not seeing it at quite the speed you’ll see on game day.”

    Game Preview from ESPN.com

Charles returns to K.C. with Broncos

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Jamaal Charles ran through the tunnel onto the field at Arrowhead Stadium 51 times as he built a legacy in Kansas City as the Chiefs' all-time leading rusher.

Even so, he is unsure what response awaits him Monday night when takes the field as a member of the Denver Broncos.

"I really don't even know," Charles said. "I'm just going up in there to play football like I've been doing my whole life. I gave my all when I was with the Chiefs."

Charles' saga over the last two years provided a roller coaster of emotions for the 30-year-old running back, who rushed for 7,260 yards, added 2,457 receiving and scored 63 touchdowns over nine seasons in Kansas City. Charles tore the ACL in his right knee in October 2015, costing him the bulk of his season. He returned in 2016, but knee inflammation limited him to only 12 carries in three games.

The Chiefs (5-2) parted ways with Charles in February, and the four-time Pro Bowler signed in May with the Broncos (3-3).

"A lot of people think I'm a traitor just because I'm playing with the Broncos, but I'm just trying to get me a job at the end of the day," Charles said. "I'm happy that the Broncos kept that dream alive for me. I'm happy to continue to start a legacy after ... I started one with the Chiefs."

Charles is averaging eight touches per game through the Broncos' first six contests, but coach Vance Joseph envisions an expanded role for the veteran as the season progresses.

"Some of it by purpose, some of it just the games we've been in, but absolutely we want to get him more touches because he's so explosive," Joseph said. "I'm just waiting for him to have one of those Jamaal Charles breakout runs."

More touches for Charles appears exactly what the struggling Denver offense needs. Joseph said the Broncos play their best when running the football, avoiding long third downs and dictating terms to the defense.

"Our goal is to get back to our formula," Joseph said. "Our three wins look the same, and our three losses look the same. We're looking to get back to what we do best."

The Chiefs put an emphasis on quashing the run last week against Oakland and succeeded, holding the Raiders to 88 yards on the ground. However, Oakland quarterback Derek Carr gashed Kansas City's pass defense for 417 yards, driving his club to a 31-30 comeback victory.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid wants to see his team stay aggressive against the run while improving its pass rush.

"We actually did pretty good against the run this past week, and we can do a little bit better of getting pressure on them," Reid said. "There's all different kinds of areas and we can put them in better positions to do it. "

Many Chiefs fans saw red when Charles signed with the Broncos. It's said time heals all wounds, but finding a worthy successor to Charles certain helped as well.

The Chiefs found their heir apparent in this year's draft with Kareem Hunt, and his historic start helped soothe the heartburn precipitated by the departure of Charles. Hunt has emerged as a leading Rookie of the Year candidate in helping the Chiefs rank second in the league at 29.6 points per game.

Hunt leads the NFL with 717 rushing yards and also has 25 catches for 285 yards with six total touchdowns, though hasn't scored in the last four games. He topped 100 yards from scrimmage in each of his first seven games, a league record he hopes to extend Monday night.

Charles sees an all-around back in Hunt.

"He's taken over the tradition of the running backs where Larry Johnson took over from Priest Holmes, I took over from Larry Johnson," Charles said. "I'm happy for the guy. I wish the guy breaks all my records."

Charles said he credits Reid for helping himself and other Chiefs, including Hunt, achieve their greatness.

"Andy Reid is a great offensive mind," Charles said. "He can get any average person or any guy that can come into his offense and make plays and make them look like superstars."

Reid shares similar warm feelings for Charles.

"I like Jamaal," Reid said. "I'm not telling you I am pulling for him on Monday. The other times I am pulling for him. He is a good kid and sure was a great player here."

That connection between the Chiefs and Charles runs deep, making an emotional affair likely Monday night. When former general manager John Dorsey called Charles to let him know the Chiefs planned to release him, Dorsey discussed plans for making sure Charles retired as a Chief and putting his name along the club's Ring of Honor inside Arrowhead Stadium.

Charles, though, stands grateful the Broncos let him continue his career, though part of him remains in Kansas City.

"Some people probably don't think that I (am), but in my heart, I'm always a Chief," Charles said.

Chiefs-Broncos scouting report, key players to watch, and a prediction
    From The Kansas City Star

    Red Zone

The Chiefs and NFL by beat writer Terez Paylor

    OCTOBER 29, 2017 5:41 PM PM

    The scheme

    Head coach: Vance Joseph
(3-3) is in his first year on the job. Joseph, 45, is a former quarterback and defensive back from Colorado who played a few years with the Jets and Colts. He spent many years on the college level as a defensive backs coach, then spent time in the same role with the 49ers, Texans and Bengals before earning the Miami Dolphins’ defensive coordinator job in 2016. He was hired to be the Broncos’ 16th head coach in January, replacing Gary Kubiak.

Offense: Mike McCoy, 45, is in his first year as Denver’s offensive coordinator. McCoy has 17 seasons of NFL coaching experience, including the previous four seasons as the Chargers’ head coach. McCoy is fond of bunch formations and crossing routes. Denver ranks 15th in passing offense (223.5 yards per game) and 15th in rushing offense (114.5). Denver is passing the ball 59 percent of the time and is among the most play-action-reliant teams in the league, using it at a 26 percent clip (second in the NFL), according to Football Outsiders.

Defense: Joe Woods, 47, is in his first year as Denver’s defensive coordinator. Woods was promoted from defensive backs coach in February, following Joseph’s hire. With Woods coaching the Broncos’ defensive backs, Denver finished first in the NFL in pass defense in both 2015 (199.6 ypg) and 2016 (185.8). The Broncos also held opponents to the lowest completion percentage (57.8), yards per attempt (5.99) and passer rating (74.3) during that stretch. Denver still runs the 3-4 defense they executed to perfection under Wade Phillips. The Broncos rank seventh in the league in pass defense (186.7 per game) and 14th in sacks (16). The Broncos’ run defense ranks second in the league (71.8 ypg). Teams have opted to stay away from play-action against this team due to its pass rush, though are surrendering 7.8 yards per play-action attempt (19th in the league), according to FO.

Special teams: Brock Olivo, 41, is in his first year as Denver’s special-teams coach. The former Missouri star spent five years as a running back in the NFL before turning to coaching, even spending three season as the Chiefs’ assistant special-teams coach (2014-2016) before landing the Broncos’ job. Kicker Brandon McManus has made 8 of 13 field-goal attempts, and punter Riley Dixon has dropped 8 of 26 punts inside the 20, 26th in the league. Denver ranks second in kickoff returns (29.8) and 11th in punt returns (10.0). It also ranks 25th in kick-return coverage (25.2) and 32nd in punt-return coverage (15.2). They’ve surrendered one punt return touchdown.

Four keys to a Chiefs victory

    1. Stay ahead of the sticks

This is not the team to get to third-and-long against. Although the Broncos are no longer the same dominant, Super Bowl-caliber team they were just a few short years ago, that has little to do with the defense, which boasts multiple stars and can still be dangerous, particularly in must-pass situations. The Chiefs have to stay out of third-and-long, lest Von Miller and Co. start hunting.

    2. Attack the middle of the field

Specifically with the run. The Chiefs could get some help up front, as center Mitch Morse is expected to play for the first time in five weeks while right guard Laurent Duvernay-Tardif is a game-day decision. If they can get the running game going, specifically their inside zone, it will make life against a still-dangerous defense (which tackles reliably) much easier. What’s more, starting inside linebacker Todd Davis is questionable with an ankle injury.

    3. Stay gap sound

After getting gashed by the Steelers for 194 yards on Oct. 15, the Chiefs’ tightented up on defense and held Oakland to 87 yards on 21 carries. They must do the same Monday, because if the Chiefs allow C.J. Anderson and Jamaal Charles –– the ex-Chief who is still averaging 5.1 yards per carry this season in limited work and will be looking to stick it to the team that unceremoniously released him months ago –– to get going, it will open up things for one of the most play-action-heavy offenses in football. That, combined with the multitude of man coverage the Chiefs play, could mean big trouble.

    4. Get after Siemian

The Chiefs could try to do what other teams have done, which is stack the line of scrimmage to discourage the run and make quarterback Trevor Siemian beat them. Siemian is completing 63 percent of his passes, but has seven touchdowns to go with his eight interceptions and a passer rating of 82.5, which is 24th among qualifying quarterbacks. The Chiefs can help themselves by hitting and getting after Siemian, who isn’t very elusive in the pocket and is playing behind a line that has surrendered 22 sacks, tied for seventh-most in the league. They might even get a turnover out of the deal, as he’s fumbled five times (losing it twice).

    Four Broncos to watch

No. 88, WR Demaryius Thomas, 29 years old, 6-3, 229, eighth season

Joined Jerry Rice and Marvin Harrison a few years ago by recording four straight seasons with over 90 catches and 1,300-plus yards. Had that streak snapped a year ago when he recorded 90 receptions but finished with 1,083 yards and five touchdowns. Massive receiver with size, speed, burst and ball skills. Wins jump balls with ease due to his leaping ability and can make the spectacular catch. Is a run-after-the-catch threat, both short and intermediate. Is on track to finished with 80 catches, 1,037 yards and zero touchdowns this season. Can take it the distance after the catch; tough to bring down due to his strength. Nasty stiff arm. Reliable No. 1 receiver. Team captain.

No. 58, OLB Von Miller, 28 years old, 6-3, 250, seventh season

Ranked No. 2 on the NFL’s top-100 list for 2017. Recorded 78 total tackles with 13.5sacks (second in NFL) and 24 pressures (sixth in the NFL) last season. Is on pace to record to 53 tackles and 19 sacks this season. Outstanding speed, burst and bend off the edge –– no one in the NFL has a better combination of physical pass-rush traits. Requires lots of attention at all times. Elite first step allows him to win with speed and set up a dangerous spin move, among other moves. Complete edge rusher who is among the game’s very best. Very rarely drops into coverage; has only dropped six times in 311 total snaps, allowing him to do what he does best –– rush the passer. Is prone to racking up offsides penalties; had four last season and has three so far this season. Plays his tail off and is adept and stripping the ball from quarterbacks. Team captain.

No. 25, CB Chris Harris, Jr., 28 years old, 5-10, 199, sixth season

Ranked No. 63 on the NFL’s top-100 list for 2017. Recorded 63 tackles, 11 pass deflections and two interceptions in 2016. Is on pace to record 53 tackles, 11 pass deflections and three interceptions. Smooth, fluid athlete who can run with most receivers and is adept in man or zone coverage. Occasionally lines up in the slot. Terrific eyes; plays the game with anticipation and doesn’t get fooled often. Combines that with excellent feet and solid ball skills. Good, but not great, press corner due to overall lack of length. Competitive tackler who is willing to step up and do the job. Is also used as a blitzer at times. Very competitive, feisty and talkative. Complete corner who could start anywhere.

    No. 21, CB Aqib Talib, 31 years old, 6-1, 205, 10th season

Ranked No. 37 on the NFL’s top-100 list for 2017. Recorded 43 tackles, 12 pass deflections and three interceptions in 2016. Is on pace to record 27 tackles, 13 pass deflections and three interceptions. Long, rangy, outside corner with excellent press man ability. Has good, but not great, long speed but nonetheless matches up well against big and small receivers alike. Good leaper who can win jump balls. Nasty and competitive; plays with swagger. Irritant who loves to talk trash and get in receivers’ heads. Plays the game with his eyes; is adept at jumping underneath routes and taking it the distance. Very good run defender and complete cornerback, just like his buddy Chris Harris. Team captain.

    Additional game notes

    ▪ Running back C.J. Anderson only needs 9 rushing yards to become just the fourth player in team history to record 400 yards in four consecutive seasons. Good runner with solid pass-protection skills.

    ▪ Running back Jamaal Charles only needs 44 yards from scrimmage to become the 10th active player to reach the 10,000-yard mark. Charles, of course, is a future Chiefs ring of honor member who enjoyed many elite years in Kansas City.

    ▪ Outside linebacker Shaq Barrett is a solid run defender who is adept at setting the edge. The Broncos also like to drop him into coverage much more than Miller.

    ▪ Outside linebacker Von Miller needs a sack to tie the second-longest sack streak of his career (six games).

    ▪ Nose tackle Domata Peko, Sr., can extend his starting streak to 119 games, the longest active streak of any defensive lineman.

    ▪ Cornerback Aqib Talib will tie Darren Sharper and Charles Woodson for the second-most career interceptions for a touchdown with his next one.

    ▪ The Broncos have won at least nine games for six straight seasons.

    Prediction: Chiefs 17-13

My guess is the Chiefs –– the losers of two straight –– are too good to see it stretch to three. The Broncos were shut out by the Chargers last week, and while the defense is still very good, it’s possible the Broncos could be just the thing the Chiefs’ suddenly-struggling defense needs to get back on track. As long as the Chiefs don’t give the game away via turnovers, I expect the home team to win a close, low-scoring affair.
