Default Dexter McCluster Unhappy With Role, Trade Possible?

    http://sports.yahoo.com/news/kansas-city-chiefs-dexter-mccluster-unhappy-role-trade-201300620.html
COMMENTARY | There might not have been one player more elated about the arrival of Andy Reid to be the next head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs than Dexter McCluster.

Reid's version of the West Coast Offense was supposed to be the magic elixir to unchain the potential of the all-purpose back that was stymied by the previous regime. Besides, the Philadelphia Eagles were supposedly interested in taking McCluster in the second round of the 2010 NFL draft.

If not for Kansas City grabbing him with the 36th pick, the Reid-McCluster marriage would already be entering its fourth year. There is buzz, however, that the whole thing could be called off before the honeymoon takes place.

Danny Parkins of 610 Sports in Kansas City tweeted that McCluster is unhappy with his role thus far and that that team is exploring all options, including trading the wide receiver.

Parkins also went on to highlight that there are questions surrounding the illness that has kept McCluster out of practice since August 22, and that caused him to miss last Saturday's preseason win over the Pittsburgh Steelers. He also says that Reid is not happy as a result.

While just a rumor at this point, there are countless examples of players forcing their way into favorable situations. If that means Kansas City must trade McCluster to appease both sides, it would not come as a shock.

The goal is to obviously surround new starting quarterback Alex Smith with as many viable options in the passing game as possible, so trading McCluster would make little sense for a team that lacks depth at wide receiver. And with Tony Moeaki now sidelined with a shoulder injury, the tight end position is all of a sudden thin as well.

It was assumed that McCluster would play an integral role in the offense this season, so moving on from him now would clearly derail this team's progress -- progress that is necessary to further distance the Chiefs from last season's 2-14 debacle.

McCluster was seen at a public pool after not practicing due to this illness. However, he was at practice but just sitting on the sideline. So, while McCluster may say not to believe in the rumors, he may very well be happy here, but it is the Chiefs shopping him, but what value does he bring?

I did a google search to see if I could find a 2nd source confirming the rumor or McCluster or Reid reacting to it. So far nobody else is saying this is true. They are only reporting that 610 sports host Danny Parkins says it's true. From ArrowheadAddict.com:
Trading Dexter McCluster because he’s unhappy about not being on the return team? Doesn’t that seem like a bit of an overreaction? As a coach, I can tell you that players are occasionally not happy with their roles, so if true, it’s not as if Andy Reid or his staff have never dealt with this before. McCluster projects to play a big role on offense, at least, for the Chiefs this season, so trading him wouldn’t make much sense.Again this is just a rumor that has been tweeted by a radio host, so let’s try to keep this all into perspective. Read more...
iSportsWeb.com seems to be somewhat supportive of the rumor.
Dexter McCluster’s role with the Kansas City Chiefs has been limited by the new coaching staff, headed by Andy Reid, and he doesn’t like it. Stories by several sources close to the Chiefs all reported today that McCluster was taken out of the rotation of returning kickoffs and punts. The continuation of the story has been that the Chiefs are seeking a trade partner for McCluster.Full Story
In his postgame press conference after preseason game 3, Reid said (paraphrasing) "Dexter came to me and said he wasn't feeling well, so I made the decision to take the pads off of him. He always wants to play, so when he says he's not feeling well, that's significant."There are a few things that support the rumor. The addition of Knile Davis and Devon Wylie have made Dexter more expendable. The Chiefs were quick to pull the trigger on Baldwin and it's not uncommon for new caches and GMs to clean house and cut ties with players from the previous regime. On the other hand, this is exactly the kind of offense that McCluster should thrive in. He says he is happy here and the Chiefs organization has not confirmed (or denied) the rumor.I think until we hear from Dexter or Reid, we should be skeptical. Danny Parkins is just trying to get attention and to get more people to listen to his show. He may be correct, but I never buy into a story without at least two sources, and preferably three.

There is a huge difference from sitting at a pool for a scheduled Birth day Part in your honor, as you are recovering from a flu than playing a game a day before in the prime of the flu. To much exercise can cause a relapse in the flu symptoms making the relapse more difficult to recover from.

Really, there is probably nothing to this story other than someone speculating conspiracy theories after news about him being at the pool got out. I read that three other players were also out ill, so there is a bug going around.

The talk about Mccluster being ill he was willing to play Saturday it was Reid that chose to sit him since there has been a flu bug going around the team they wanted to limit the time being around to spread it any farther then what it already had. And since the game doesn't count it wasn't a big deal. Reid said on the post game video on kcchiefs.com that he decided to sit Mccluster so if he was at a pool the next day I don't think it's a big deal.

Let's look at this a little more closely.......

If people are spreading rumors like this then it means they think the Chiefs are worth paying attention to. Nobody spreads rumors about a team that has no hope.

Hard to believe, but it might be true. I've seen football players do stupider things in my life.

If it is true then it is all on Dexter McCluster. The Andy Reid offense is likely to be good for McCluster so if he wants out then he is just a damned pantywaist.

I find this rumor VERY hard to believe.

But if he really wants out then get him the hell out the door. Last thing we need is a receiver that is going to go half speed. We need Chiefs not pussies.

I'd take this with a grain of salt. Why would McCluster leave an offense that's probably going to be good for his career?
