Unhappy An overlooked problem with our offense.

I have seen may reasons offered as to why our O is struggling. But I do not remember this one discussed. We jump around blaming the new scheme, the O-line, the QB, the receivers, the OC, the O-line coach, the play calling, etc. But we should not overlook the fact that this offense is sorely lacking in locker room leadership. We simply do not have motivating veteran players on our Offense. The closest I can think of that should have assumed that role are:

    1. Alex Smith- All the talk about his game manager label, added to the fact that he simply distrusts his receivers does not earn him a general's credibility among the rest of the O players.

    2. Jamaal Charles- Dude is an awesome RB, who performs well on the field. But I have not detected anything in his demeanor as a star player who should demand perfection from his fellow offense players.

    3. Branden Albert- He demanded LT money and showed himself pretty selfish in the off season refusing to accept a move to a more suitable position where he can possibly excel. In the process he has been no more than an average LT delaying Fisher's development.

    4. Dwaine Bowe- I was really happy with his never say die attitude during the ugly disaster that was 2012. At times he literally carried the offense on his shoulders last year. This year, after the big contract he seems to have lost his focus and desire to play hard. This is the saddest one of all, because he has the talent and the outspoken personality for the leadership role.

    5. (Can't think of any other) :(

At least he doesn't fumble on every sack like Cassel.

I'll never understand Bowe. He'll make a circus catch and then drop the next pass that hits him square in the hands. Hard to see from tv what he looks like running routes. People say he's dogging them. I can understand to apoint when you rarely even have a pass attempted in your direction game after game. I don't know, but whether he's covered or not Alex should throw it up somewhere he and only he can attempt a big catch and keep at it. That's what we're paying him for, isn't it? Both of them, actually.
In the Broncos game Bowe was targeted 14 times and only caught 4 passes. Now I don't know how many of those passes were off target, how many were defended or batted down, and how many were just outright dropped, but that is a terrible percentage. By contrast, McCluster was only targeted 8 times and he caught 5 passes. Add in that Charles was targeted 8 times and only caught two passes (for -6 yards) and it's easy to see why our offense is struggling.

I think Alex is afraid to throw a "jump ball" into tight coverage even though Bowe would have a good chance of coming down with it. That's served us well as far as avoiding turnovers goes, but it's also stifling offensive production. Those are the types of passes where Bowe excels. He can't catch it when he's wide open ... Maybe Smith doesn't have the accuracy to throw the ball where "only Bowe can get it," but in the 5-15 yard range any decent QB should be able to do that.

I swear in most cases if they receive that pass a 10th of a second earlier they have a good chance of juking that 1st penetrating defender out and after that who knows how many yards they can actually get before they are brought down. Somebody needs to work with Alex to put more zip into those backfield passes.
I wonder if Alex is intentionally not throwing hard, because when he does it in practice his receivers drop the ball. That's okay if the ball travels 4 or 5 yards before it gets to the receiver, but if it is caught in the backfield or at the line of scrimmage, it's useless unless you get yards after the catch.

I don't understand why Charles only had 18 carries Sunday night. I realize we were playing from behind most of the game but Jamaal has the highest yards per carry average of all time in the NFL--better than Jim Brown, Adrian Peterson, Shaun Alexander, everybody. When he gets at least 20 carries he almost always has 100 yds rushing and when he has over 100 yds rushing, the Chiefs usually win. He should be getting at least 25-30 carries per game. An effective running game would not only help with time of possession, rest the defense, and limit the opponents ability to score, but it would also make the pass game more effective.

Didn't Reid promise earlier in the season that Charles would get more touches? What happened to that?

Reid loves to throw, Eagle fans have been saying "he'll abandon the run and throw a lot"

Either Smith has problems looks around the field OR certain pass plays call for him to throw to a check down. How many times did denver swat down the check down pass?

The real problem with Chiefs Offense is they need to get OUT of the bad habit of squandering opportunities and get INTO the habit of cashing in more on their opportunities.

This has been a season-long problem with the Chiefs Offense that has kept too many games closer than what they should have been & cost them the game in Denver -- too many squandered opportunities. You can't compete in the post-season doing that.

This closes the circle right back to the topic of this thread. What you are saying is a matter of attitude. And attitude is instilled by team leaders.

Denver players put out extra on a large part because they do not want to let "the great" Peyton Manning down. I'm not asking to have a team leader of the stature of PM. But we can have several proven veterans take the lead and demand for everyone else to perform better. The only ones in that position are the 4 I mentioned on our O. But as I pointed out, for their own individual reasons they do not pick up that mantle.

^^It isn't just players, it's coaching as well. One of the things that made the Packers teams so great under Vince Lombardi was his ZERO tolerance for sloppy play and he demanded fundamentally sound football to be played 100% of the time by everybody. That doesn't seem to be the case with Chiefs players -- except maybe Knile Davis -- regarding the Chiefs coaching staff, especially with the dropped passes by the WR's. Alex has been saying all along that they need to do a better job of cashing in on their chances, but it seemingly falling on deaf ears regarding the other 10 guys, except maybe Charles. Don't count on any such thing from Albert or Bowe as they've never done it in the past & most likely aren't about to start now. Fisher might be such a guy in future years, but this year he's in his 1st year and still in the process of establishing himself.

    THIS THIS THIS.

If the recievers can get their hands on it, they should come down with it. Too many times this season I've seen balls hit the numbers or hands of their recievers and wind up being incomplete. The only way I know of to get rid of that, at this point in the season, is to run pass catching drills to the point where a reciever never wants to run them again. The mentality of "It's okay to drop passes, we'll just hand the ball over to JC and he'll get the real yards anyway" went out the door with Brian Daboll. If we're going to be competitive in a pass first offense, the receptions must be made.

JC is a great running back - but sometimes we get ourselves attached to him in the same way that Linus gets attached to his blanket. Going by observation, Reid's trying to break that habit, at least until the fourth quarter.

The clock has already struck midnight on Charles being THE Offense for the Chiefs, as far as I'm concerned. The Chiefs need to put the balance back into their Offense that they had back when Dick Vermeil was coach.

As for the receivers, if you listen to texaschief's analysis on his latest Chiefs Crowd audio broadcast, he hits the nail right on the head and says the same thing I've been hearing Len Dawson say all season long -- the receivers don't run routes correctly and get no separation at all, hardly ever. Especially Dwayne Bowe. Bowe isn't even close to another LSU receiver that played for the Chiefs before Bowe arrived named Eddie Kennison. The receivers also just stop and don't run to an open area when Alex breaks the pocket.

This is what a believe will put a premature end to the Chiefs 2013 season & waste the efforts of a great Defense that's given them scores of chances, but the Offense doesn't cash in on them, because receivers don't get open and catch the ball.
