Chiefs:“Even though I know it’s going to be hostile and there are going to be people talking trash and everything like that, I’m excited for it because it’s one of the best environments in football. And you want to do that when you grow up watching these games in the best environments and see what it’s like.”
–Chiefs Quarterback Patrick Mahomes
Bills:
“They’re at the top of the mountain. They know what it takes to get there. We’ve yet to do that. As a competitor, to be in a situation like this is something you dream about.”
–Bills Quarterback Josh Allen

This is the game of the week between two teams that have met in
recent years, but this game is a Bills home game. That means Patrick
Mahomes will be playing the first road playoff game in his career. It
sure doesn’t come in an easy place to play. The Bills have rolled into
the playoffs, needing to win every game down the stretch, but they
have some major defensive injuries. The Chiefs offense showed well
last week against Miami, so that could be a problem. Josh Allen has
to limit his mistakes, which he did in the victory over the Steelers. I
think he does here as the Bills beat the Chiefs to advance to the AFC
championship game.
The Kansas City Chiefs will take on the Buffalo Bills on Sunday night with a spot in the AFC Championship Game on the line.
Here are five things to keep in mind heading into game day.
1. Here’s a look at the final injury report for both teams.
The Chiefs will be without defensive tackle Derrick Nnadi (triceps) and offensive tackle Wanya Morris (concussion protocol) on Sunday, while wide receivers Kadarius Toney (hip/ankle) and Justyn Ross (hamstring) are listed as “Questionable.”
Overall, however, the Chiefs are relatively healthy for this time of year. Additionally, it’s worth pointing out that tailback Isiah Pacheco and linebacker Drue Tranquill were each absent from Kansas City’s matchup with Buffalo back in Week 14. Both players are ready to go this time around.
Update: The Chiefs downgraded Toney to “Out” on Saturday morning and added injury designations for linebacker Willie Gay (Questionable, Neck) and defensive end Charles Omenihu (Questionable, Illness).
As for the Bills, they already listed wide receiver Gabe Davis (knee), cornerback Christian Benford (knee), safety Taylor Rapp (calf) and linebacker Baylon Spector (back) as “Out” for Sunday’s game. Davis has 45 catches for 746 yards and seven touchdowns this season, and looking at recent history, Davis has five touchdowns against the Chiefs during his career. Benford is also a significant loss, as he leads the Bills with 10 passes defensed across 824 defensive snaps – the third-most among all Bills’ defensive backs.
Buffalo also listed several significant contributors as “Questionable” for Sunday, including linebacker Terrel Bernard (ankle), cornerback Rasul Douglas (knee), cornerback Taron Johnson (concussion protocol) and punter Sam Martin (hamstring). Bernard, in particular, is of note considering that he led Buffalo with 143 tackles this season while ranking second on the team in interceptions (3) and third in sacks (6.5). Bernard, who was injured during last week’s game vs. Pittsburgh, would be a major loss for the Bills if he is unable to play.
2. The Bills have committed to the running game more than any other team in recent weeks.
Any discussion surrounding the Bills in recent years rightfully began with their passing game, which ranked fourth in the NFL in yards-per-game between the 2020 and 2022 campaigns. As Buffalo entered Week 14 with a 6-6 record and fledging postseason hopes, however, that formula changed significantly. In fact, over the final five games of the regular season, the Bills led the league in rushing attempts with 180.
Those rushes were primarily divided between tailback James Cook (84), quarterback Josh Allen (49) and tailback Ty Johnson (20), who collectively helped lead Buffalo to victories in five consecutive games and secure a come-from-behind AFC East title. Allen, in particular, leads all quarterbacks in rushing attempts during that span, recording six touchdowns and five runs of double-digit yardage.
It’s apparent that Buffalo attempted to avoid using Allen as a runner for much of the season, as he logged just 62 rushing attempts through the Bills’ first 12 games, but the mid-season move to Joe Brady at offensive coordinator – not to mention some dire circumstances – clearly changed that thinking over Buffalo’s final five contests. With all of that in mind, it is imperative that the Chiefs contain Buffalo’s running game – whether it be Cook or Allen – in order to slow down the Bills’ offense.
For further context, Buffalo has lost all four of its games this season in which it tallied fewer than 100 rushing yards. Conversely, the Bills are 12-2 when they hit that mark. It goes beyond just production, too, as Buffalo’s recent strategy is also about simply playing ball control. The Bills led the NFL in total time of possession between Week 14 and the end of the regular season, racking up a grand total of 168 minutes and 21 seconds.
A Chiefs’ victory on Sunday will be contingent on not only slowing down the Bills’ running game, but also preventing numerous long, clock-consuming possessions.
3. The Chiefs’ offensive recipe last week was efficient and effective.
Quarterback Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs’ offense largely funneled its production through the trio of tailback Isiah Pacheco, wide receiver Rashee Rice and tight end Travis Kelce in last Saturday’s victory over Miami, doing so with quite a bit of success. Those three players combined for 289 total yards and two touchdowns on 40 touches, accounting for 71 percent of the Chiefs’ offensive yardage.
Those three players also recorded 13 first downs (52 percent of the Chiefs’ total) and 11 plays of double-digit yardage (65 percent of the Chiefs’ total), combining to form the basis of a Chiefs offense that tallied points on six of its first eight possessions.
It’s noteworthy, too, that those three players did the majority of their damage over the middle of the field on Saturday, making the Bills’ injury situation at linebacker of particular significance.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tTxgZn1FkjQ
4. Kansas City rebounded from a slow start to hold the Bills to just six second-half points in Week 14.
The Chiefs’ defense – which allowed the second-fewest offensive points (271) of any team in the NFL this season – didn’t skip a beat against Miami, holding the Dolphins to just 264 offensive yards, a 1-for-12 mark on third down and a season-low of seven points. Kansas City has now held the opposition under 24 points in 16 of 18 games this year, including in Week 14 against Buffalo.
The Bills raced out to a 14-point lead in that game, finding the end zone on two of their first three drives, but the Chiefs’ defense was dominant throughout the rest of the contest, holding Buffalo to just six points on its final seven possessions. The Chiefs allowed just 190 total yards on those last seven drives, providing the Chiefs’ offense with an opportunity to get back into the game.
The two key offensive plays for Buffalo on its scoring drives were chunk passes to tailback James Cook, who hauled in receptions of 25 and 27 yards across those two possessions, the first of which found the end zone. The Chiefs managed to hold Cook to just 31 receiving yards over the rest of the game, but the early possessions of that matchup should serve as a reminder of what the second-year tailback can do as a receiver.
5. This marks the Chiefs’ sixth-straight season reaching the Divisional Round.
Kansas City is undoubtedly in the midst of one of the greatest runs of sustained success in recent league history, as the Chiefs’ active streak of six consecutive appearances in the Divisional Round of the playoffs marks the third-longest stretch since the postseason expanded to 12 teams in 1990.
Only the New England Patriots (9 straight from 2010-18) and the San Francisco 49ers (7 straight from 1992-98) compiled longer streaks than Kansas City in that span.
The Chiefs have won each of their five previous trips to the Divisional Round as part of that streak, and now with yet another trip to the AFC Championship Game on the line, Kansas City will set out to do the same on Sunday night.

ASSOCIATED PRESSORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) — As much respect Josh Allen has for friend and occasional offseason golf partner Patrick Mahomes, the Buffalo Bills quarterback still can’t forget when his Kansas City Chiefs rival got the last laugh at his expense.
The two were teammates in a made-for-TV golf event in June 2022 when Mahomes was asked to describe Allen’s biggest fear. Pausing for a moment, Mahomes said, “A coin toss,” causing Allen to smile and lower his head.
The Kansas City quarterback, of course, was referring to the Chiefs’ 42-36 overtime victory in a 2021 season AFC divisional-round game that Bills fans have dubbed “13 Seconds.” That’s the amount of time it took Mahomes to march the Chiefs 44 yards to set up a tying field goal as time expired, after which Kansas City won the coin toss and ended the game with a touchdown on the first overtime possession.
On Sunday night, the Bills (12-6) and Chiefs (12-6) will meet in the playoffs for the third time in four years and once again in the divisional round, and the past is the last thing on Allen’s mind.
“We don’t need to bring that up,” Allen said Wednesday. “I’m sure people will bring up what I’m afraid of but, nah, I got a lot of respect for him and his game and who he is off the field.”
At least two things have changed since the last Bills-Chiefs playoff meeting.
The Bills’ loss prompted the NFL to change its postseason overtime rules to ensure both teams get a possession.

ASSOCIATED PRESSAfter having their 2020 and ’21 seasons end at Arrowhead Stadium with playoff losses, it’s the Bills’ turn to host the Chiefs in what will be Mahomes’ first playoff road game. It will also mark Mahomes’ first time experiencing the full roar of fans at Highmark Stadium. His only other game at Buffalo was played in an empty stadium due to COVID-19 restrictions in 2020.

“Even though I know it’s going to be hostile and there are going to be people talking trash and everything like that, I’m excited for it because it’s one of the best environments in football,” Mahomes said. “And you want to do that when you grow up watching these games in the best environments and see what it’s like.”
Although the teams had the same record in the regular season, Buffalo won the tiebreaker — and the right to host — with its 20-17 win at Kansas City last month. That was the first of six straight victories for the Bills, including Monday’s wild-card round victory over Pittsburgh.
Snow isn’t in the forecast, though cold temperatures are, which shouldn’t affect either team. The Bills are accustomed to the cold, while the Chiefs beat visiting Miami last weekend with a game-time temperature of minus-4 Fahrenheit (minus-20 Celsius) and wind chills that made it feel 20 degrees colder.

ASSOCIATED PRESSThe game carries plenty of subplots.
Bills coach Sean McDermott’s first NFL job was on current Chiefs coach Andy Reid’s staff in Philadelphia in 1999.
“Smart, tough and works hard,” Reid said of McDermott.
And McDermott bears no grudge for Reid’s decision to fire him as the Eagles’ defensive coordinator following the 2010 season.
“I think it doubled down on my work ethic,” said McDermott, who then spent six years as Carolina’s defensive coordinator before Buffalo hired him in 2017. “In some ways, I’m extremely grateful for it.”
There’s also the familiarity between non-division rivals who have split their past six meetings, including playoffs, since 2020.
“There’s no secrets,” Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones said.
Bills defensive tackle Ed Oliver has played at Arrowhead five times over the past four years.
“It’s just like playing a divisional opponent,” Oliver said. “Honestly, I love playing there. But we get them here.”
Wherever the setting, Allen appreciates how difficult it will be to beat the defending Super Bowl champions.
“They’re at the top of the mountain. They know what it takes to get there. We’ve yet to do that,” said Allen, whose lone AFC championship game appearance ended in a 38-24 loss at Kansas City. “As a competitor, to be in a situation like this is something you dream about.”

The Chiefs, who led the NFL in dropped passes this season, have turned to Rashee Rice to take some of the attention off tight end Travis Kelce. The rookie receiver responded against Miami by setting franchise records with eight catches for 130 yards. It was the sixth-most yards receiving by a rookie in NFL history.
“I’m going out there just to get a win, first of all,” Rice said, “and everything else just comes with it.”
DEPLETED D
A Bills defense already missing starting cornerback Tre’Davious White and starting linebacker Matt Milano could be further depleted after four more regulars were hurt against the Steelers. The group includes starting nickelback Taron Johnson (concussion) and starting cornerback Christian Benford (knee).
“No big thing. We’re built for this,” Oliver said. “We can handle this. This is nothing new.”

After converting more than 71% of their red-zone trips into touchdowns last season, the Chiefs managed just 52% this season, putting them in the bottom half of the league. The problems continued against Miami, when the Chiefs went 2 for 6 and settled for four field goals from Harrison Butker.
“It’s probably more complicated than one thing,” Reid said. “We all have a little piece of that. You obviously want to score touchdowns. Love Butker and he’s doing a phenomenal job, but you want to get into the end zone.”

from Chiefs.com01/21/2024 at 8:46 am #10895565 things to watch as the Chiefs play the Bills in AFC Divisional Round
from ArrowheadPride.comFor the third time in four seasons, Kansas City will face Buffalo to advance in the playoffs, or go home.
By Ron Kopp | @Ron_Kopp | Jan 20, 2024, 12:00pm CST
Photo by David Eulitt/Getty ImagesThe NFL’s Divisional Round will kickoff this weekend, a four-game schedule that concludes with a matchup between the (12-6) Kansas City Chiefs and the (12-6) Buffalo Bills. The AFC rivals will play at High Mark Stadium in Orchard Park, New York, kicking off at 5:30 PM Arrowhead time.
The Bills are a 2.5-point betting favorite in this game, according to DraftKings Sportsbook. It’s a rare case of the Chiefs and quarterback Patrick Mahomes playing as the underdog, mainly because it’s the first time in his career he’s playing on the road in the playoffs.
That’s because Buffalo came into Arrowhead Stadium in Week 14 and escaped with a 20-17 victory. With the home-field advantage on their side this time, the Bills will be geared up to avenge the two previous postseason losses.
I have five things to watch in what will be an actual battle:
1. Containing Josh Allen
Photo by Ryan Kang/Getty ImagesThe Bills’ offense has evolved to not rely as much on quarterback Josh Allen over the six-game win streak; the offensive line and run game have stepped up. Still, the team leans on Allen to take off and make a play himself on crucial downs.
A good example was his 52-yard touchdown run last week. Defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo couldn’t help but gaulk a little when describing him to reporters on Thursday.
“When you put that tape on, and he’s running, the way he makes people miss at 6 feet 5, it’s amazing,” Spags marveled. “I don’t know where we’ve ever seen that… he could probably play fullback in this league, or tight end, offensive tackle, defensive end, linebacker, and be an All-Pro at all of them; I’m really not kidding, if he wanted to do that.”
Allen was heavily pressured by the Chiefs in Week 14, facing a season-high pressure rate of 49% according to NFL NextGen Stats. He wasn’t able to find as much scrambling room as previous matchups due to the Chiefs’ athleticism in their four-man rushes. At times, the fourth rusher would be linebacker Willie Gay Jr. reading Allen’s movement.
Look for the Chiefs’ pass-rush scheme to play with awareness of Allen’s ability to break the pocket.
2. Covering Bills’ variety of pass catchers
Photo by Jamie Squire/Getty ImagesAllen will be looking to scramble against the Chiefs because Spagnuolo trusts his man coverage, and Kansas City’s secondary has momentum heading in. Buffalo will be missing wide receiver Gabe Davis; plus, wide receiver Stefon Diggs has a foot injury that limited his practice participation in Friday, after missing Thursday.
In Week 14, cornerback L’Jarius Sneed limited Diggs to 24 yards over 11 targets. That matchup could be even more important this time, and Sneed’s going into it with respect.
“He’s a great receiver,” Sneed noted in the locker room Thursday. “Smart, great route runner… he’s been hard working, that’s why he’s been one of the top receivers in the league.”
The rest of the pass defense has plenty to account for themselves. Running back James Cook had receptions of 25 and 27 yards last matchup, taking advantage of the Chiefs’ first game without linebacker Drue Tranquill and safety Bryan Cook; it was also Nick Bolton’s first week back from the wrist injury.
A healthier middle of the field will also need to account for tight ends Dalton Kincaid and Dawson Knox. The duo have come on strong: Kincaid has 230 yards and a touchdown over the last three games, while Knox has scored in each of the last two.
Continued on next post~~~
01/21/2024 at 8:50 am #1089557~~~continued from previous post
3. Attacking a depleted Buffalo defense
Photo by Ryan Kang/Getty ImagesA similar story to the Miami Dolphins last week, the Bills were ambushed by the injury bug on defense. Starting cornerback Christan Benford, safety Taylor Rapp, and linebacker Baylon Spector have all been ruled out from playing, while linebacker Terrel Bernard, slot cornerback Taron Johnson, and cornerback Rasul Douglas are questionable.
Bernard is the team’s snap leader at linebacker and was replaced last week by the injured Spector. Johnson is the snap leader at his position, and Douglas has been the starter opposite Benford down the stretch; he is trending to play.
The Chiefs will try to take advantage with tight end Travis Kelce, whether he finds room himself or open things up for others. Kansas City should find success manipulating the second level of Buffalo’s defense.
4. Isiah Pacheco setting pace
Photo by Jamie Squire/Getty ImagesChiefs’ starting running back Isiah Pacheco did not play in Week 14, and his substitutes only managed 58 yards in his absence.
His role will be crucial to keeping the Chiefs’ offense out of pressure situations in a hostile environment. Buffalo’s run defense won’t make that easy, but Kansas City must attack the ground game in a similarly aggressive fashion as last week. Even if it wasn’t always efficient, the team accumulated 147 rushing yards and consistently sustained drives deep into opponent territory.
The focused effort can open up play-action windows, just like it did against a Miami defense working through injury.
5. Stepped up Chiefs’ run defense
Photo by Cooper Neill/Getty ImagesOn Thursday, Spagnuolo noted that the Bills’ offense has “become really challenging with the run game.” He noted James Cook, who has at least 13 carries in the team’s last five games.
It’s the commitment Buffalo has shown to a true rushing attack, and that will be a challenge for a Chiefs’ run defense down its starter at the point of attack: nose tackle Derrick Nnadi was ruled out with a tricep injury.
Veteran defensive tackle Mike Pennel will be relied on in his absence, but so will the entirety of the defensive line to not allow Cook easy access into open space. Look for defensive ends Charles Omenihu and Mike Danna to be used inside more often.
The linebackers must also hunt down Cook on handoffs to limit explosive runs. That can keep Buffalo behind the sticks, putting Josh Allen under pressure.
