But here it is. The Jets can’t score and the Chiefs are playing outstanding
defense. The Jets have a good defense, but Patrick Mahomes got it going
last week. The Chiefs will win a tough road game.

[/TABLE]The Kansas City Chiefs will look to make it three wins in a row on Sunday night with a prime-time showdown against the New York Jets on deck.
Here are five things to keep in mind heading into game day.
1. Here’s a look at the final injury report for both teams.
The Chiefs will be without linebacker Nick Bolton (ankle) and cornerback Jaylen Watson (shoulder) on Sunday as both players missed time in practice this week due to injury. It will mark the second-straight week that the Chiefs will be without Bolton, but fortunately, veteran linebacker Drue Tranquill demonstrated that he is more than capable of filling that void last Sunday.
“I thought [Tranquill] did a great job. He has been working since the day he got here, [and] he has been doing a lot of different things – he has learned multiple roles,” said Linebackers Coach Brendan Daly. “The situation came up with Nick, and he was ready to go…I would say he did an excellent job.”
As for the Jets, they’ll be without safety Tony Adams on Sunday. Adams started each of the Jets’ first two games before suffering a hamstring injury.
2. The Jets’ defense is among the best in the NFL, particularly in the red zone.
New York entered this season with one of the top defenses in the NFL, featuring All-Pro talents such as cornerback Sauce Gardner and defensive tackle Quinnen Williams among several others. The Jets’ may be 1-2 on the season, but that fact remains true – New York’s defense is among the best in the league.
It has been a “bend-but-don’t-break” effort through three games for New York, as this group ranks 22nd on third down (44 percent), 20th in net yards-allowed-per-game (351.3) and 19th in total first downs allowed (62), but – most importantly – the Jets own the No. 5 red zone defense in the league. In fact, New York has allowed eight drives of 10+ plays this season – the second-most in the NFL – but only three of eight red zone possessions have ended with touchdowns for the opponent.
It sets up an interesting matchup against the Chiefs’ red zone offense, which currently ranks third in the NFL (75 percent) and is coming off a week in which they went 5-for-5 in red zone touchdown efficiency vs. Chicago.
Offensive Coordinator Matt Nagy spoke about the Jets’ formidable defense on Thursday.
“It’s a big time challenge,” Nagy said. “This defense plays very, very hard, and they’re physical…It’s going to be a fist fight. These guys are good…They’re good on all three levels. We have our hands full, but we’re excited for that opportunity.”

3. Tailback Jerick McKinnon has been a touchdown machine since the latter portion of last season.
One of the Chiefs’ primary weapons in the red zone over the last two seasons has been tailback Jerick McKinnon, who has a league-leading 10 touchdown catches since Week 13 of last season (and three more than second place). Additionally, only McKinnon’s teammate – Chiefs’ tight end Travis Kelce – caught more red zone touchdowns last season than the veteran tailback (7).
Each of McKinnon’s two touchdown grabs last week took place in the red zone, and in a matchup against one of the league’s top red zone defenses, McKinnon may prove to be a dynamic weapon yet again.
Outside of red zone efficiency – and this point may seem obvious – a major area of emphasis on Sunday night needs to be ball security. The turnover battle is always important, but in the case of New York, it has been the difference between winning and losing. The Jets forced four turnovers in their Week 1 victory over Buffalo, converting those takeaways into 13 points. Conversely, New York didn’t force any turnovers in each of its last two games.
4. Chiefs’ cornerback Trent McDuffie is currently the top-ranked corner on Pro Football Focus.
McDuffie is off to an outstanding start this season, earning the No. 1 PFF grade among all cornerbacks through Week 3. Opposing quarterbacks have a collective quarterback rating of just 73.9 when targeting McDuffie this year, completing eight passes for only 64 yards.
The second-year cornerback has split his time between the slot (90 snaps) and as a boundary corner (51 snaps) while forcing two fumbles through three weeks.
Defensive Backs’ Coach Dave Merritt reacted to McDuffie’s impressive PFF ranking on Thursday.
“I did not know that, [but] I see that and more. Trent is playing at a very high level right now,” Merritt said. “The young man, he studies – he’s probably one of the smartest DBs that I’ve come across at this age, as far as going into his second year. So, PFF and all the rankings that they have, they obviously have been watching the film, because he’s been playing good football for us, and we need that.”
5. The Jets feature some young playmakers on offense.
New York has amassed the No. 32 scoring offense in the NFL this season, but despite those results, the Jets employ a handful of playmakers who will present a significant challenge on Sunday night. That conversation begins with wide receiver Garrett Wilson – the reigning Offensive Rookie of the Year – and second-year tailback Breece Hall, who rushed for 127 yards vs. Buffalo in Week 1.
They’ll be facing a Chiefs’ defense that has surrendered only three offensive touchdowns on the year, and prior to a score late in the fourth quarter of last Sunday’s game vs. Chicago, Kansas City had gone seven consecutive quarters without allowing a trip to the end zone. Overall, Kansas City owns the No. 4 scoring defense, the No. 5 third-down defense and the No. 6 total defense in the league through three weeks.
The Chiefs will aim to maintain that defensive success on Sunday night as Kansas City takes aim at a third-consecutive victory with a matchup against the Jets.

AGAINST THE SPREAD: Chiefs 2-1; Jets 1-2.
SERIES RECORD: Chiefs lead 20-19-1.
LAST MEETING: Chiefs beat Jets 35-9 on Nov. 1, 2020, in Kansas City, Missouri.
LAST WEEK: Chiefs beat Bears 41-10; Jets lost to Patriots 15-10.

JETS DEFENSE: OVERALL (20), RUSH (23), PASS (16), SCORING (12)
TURNOVER DIFFERENTIAL: Chiefs minus-2; Jets minus-1.
CHIEFS PLAYER TO WATCH: TE Travis Kelce. Taylor Swift is watching him, so why shouldn’t everyone else? He has 71 touchdown receptions, which is five behind Pro Football Hall of Fame tight end Tony Gonzalez for the franchise record. Kelce and Patrick Mahomes have connected 48 times for touchdowns, including once last week against Chicago. Three more and they will tie Drew Brees and Jimmy Graham for the third most for a QB-TE combo in NFL history.
JETS PLAYER TO WATCH: QB Zach Wilson. It has gotten ugly (again) for the 2021 No. 2 overall draft pick. Struggling in place of the injured Aaron Rodgers, Wilson has drawn ire of frustrated fans — including Hall of Famer Joe Namath — who are clamoring for a quarterback change. New York signed veteran Trevor Siemian to its practice squad and he’ll be inactive this week. But if Wilson can’t improve on his production in a hurry, fans will be clamoring for Siemian moving forward.
KEY MATCHUP: Chiefs O-line vs. Jets D-line. Mahomes has been getting excellent blocking in front of him, having been pressured on only 25.4% of his drop-backs this season — which is a career low. Center Creed Humphrey and left guard Joe Thuney allowed no pressures on their 41 pass-blocking snaps against Chicago. The Jets were expected to have a strong pass rush this season and are putting pressure on quarterbacks, but have just six sacks through three games and Quinnen Williams is looking for his first after a career-high 12 last season.
KEY INJURIES: Mahomes tweaked his ankle last week against Chicago, but is fine and fully practiced all week. … DT Chris Jones was limited during the week with a groin ailment, but was slated to play. … LB Nick Bolton was ruled out for the second straight game with a sprained ankle. … Jets S Tony Adams (hamstring) and backup OL Wes Schweitzer (concussion) will sit out again this week after missing last week’s game.
SERIES NOTES: The Chiefs have won three of the past four meetings. … The teams have met twice in the postseason: a win by the Chiefs in the 1969 divisional round; and a victory by the Jets in the 1986 wild-card round. … The Jets are 12-8-1 at home — including the two postseason matchups — against the Chiefs. … Kansas City is looking to snap a four-game road skid against the Jets.

He could reach 200 in his 84th game Sunday night, five faster than Dan Marino’s NFL record. … Mahomes surpassed 25,000 yards passing last week against the Bears. He did it in 83 games, seven faster than Matthew Stafford’s record. … Chiefs RB Jerick McKinnon had two TD receptions last week against the Bears. He has 11 TD catches in 33 games for Kansas City, the fourth most by a running back in club history. … Kelce has caught a pass in 145 consecutive games, five shy of Hall of Famer Ozzie Newsome for the second-longest streak among tight ends. … Humphrey is expected to start his 37th straight game since he was drafted. That’s the fifth-longest streak to start a career in club history. … Kansas City allowed 203 yards last week against Chicago. It was the fifth-fewest yards since Reid took over before the 2013 season. … Jones has 2 1/2 sacks in the two games since ending his holdout. … The Jets went 1 for 10 on third down against Dallas in Week 2 and 2 for 14 last Sunday against New England. For the season, they’re 8 for 37 with a 22% conversion rate ranking last in the NFL. … New York had just 12 first downs and averaged a measly 2.8 yards per play in the loss to the Patriots. … Wilson’s 57.0 quarterback rating ranks last in the NFL. The streak began in Week 2 of the 2017 season. He’s one of five active players with at least 100 straight starts. … Former Jets star DL Joe Klecko will receive his Pro Football Hall of Fame Ring of Excellence during a halftime ceremony. Klecko will also serve as the Jets’ honorary captain.FANTASY TIP: Chiefs RB Isiah Pacheco had a season-high 78 yards from scrimmage last week and has led Kansas City’s backfield in touches in each of the first three games. He could see increased carries if this one gets out of hand in the Chiefs’ favor early.

Jay Biggerstaff-USA TODAY SportsAfter two consecutive Sunday afternoon kickoffs, the Kansas City Chiefs (2-1) are back in primetime to face the New York Jets (1-2) on Sunday Night Football in Week 4. The Chiefs enter the weekend as nine-point favorites, according to DraftKings Sportsbook.
That’s not what NBC anticipated when they scheduled this game; it was supposed to be a matchup of Chiefs’ quarterback Patrick Mahomes and New York Jets’ signal-caller Aaron Rodgers. Unfortunately, Rodgers tore his Achilles in Week 1.
It’s the third time the two legendary quarterbacks have had their teams match up without both players active. In 2019, a contest with the Green Bay Packers came during Mahomes’ recovery from the infamous knee injury. In 2021, Rodgers was on the COVID list for one week — the week that Green Bay was visiting Kansas City.
The football gods won’t give us that all-time matchup, but there’s still a lot to watch on Sunday evening. Here are five things to observe:
1. Continued dominance from the Chiefs’ defense
Jay Biggerstaff-USA TODAY SportsThrough three weeks, no one has scored fewer points than the New York Jets. The 42 points they’ve totaled is last in the NFL, along with their ranking in total yards and passing yards.
It all stems from heating up Zach Wilson. Wilson has been pressured on a league-leading 51% of his dropbacks this season. He has averaged only 3.7 yards per attempt in those situations and completed only 36% of his passes. Both rank third among starting quarterbacks this season.
When Wilson has thrown from a clean pocket this season, his average depth of target is 8.8 yards — one of the highest in the league.
“The quarterback (Zach Wilson) has got a big arm,” defensive line coach Joe Cullen told reporters on Thursday. “When you see him throw with rhythm and timing, and he knows where he’s going with the ball it looks pretty good.”
If the Chiefs want to keep the Jets down, it’ll be up to the pass rush once again. Watch for defensive tackle Chris Jones and company to control the game.
2. Containing a deep Jets’ pass rush
Photo by Frank Jansky/Icon Sportswire via Getty ImagesSo far this season, the Jets have only accumulated six sacks — a middle-of-the-pack ranking in the NFL. Yet, they have three different pass rushers with double-digit pressures this year. For comparison, the Chiefs only have one.
Defensive linemen Quinnen Williams, John Franklin-Myers, and edge rusher Bryce Huff are just the top of a deep group. Chiefs’ offensive line coach Andy Heck is preparing his unit for a tough challenge.
“They’re hard chargers,” Heck shared with reporters Thursday. “These guys are screeching off the ball, vertical edge setting, they play with tenacious effort so that jumps off the tape at you. They’re sound, they know what they’re doing, they play a relatively simple scheme, and I think that’s one of the reasons they play so fast.”
Mahomes has been kept relatively clean this year, but the pass protection may have its toughest test yet.

3. Slowing New York’s rushing attack
Photo by Jim McIsaac/Getty ImagesThe Jets will clearly want to run the ball on Sunday, and they’ll be facing a Kansas City run defense that has been stout. The Chiefs’ defense has allowed only 3.9 yards per carry this season, and they’ve only given up one rushing touchdown.
Running backs Dalvin Cook and Breece Hall are both exciting players, but Hall is the more explosive one — even coming off a torn ACL in 2022.
“He broke [out] against the Buffalo Bills who have a really good front,” Cullen said of Hall. “They had 172 yards rushing, and he broke a couple long ones… an injury like that takes time and he’s gotten stronger and stronger as the games have gone on.”
The Chiefs’ linebackers will have to be on their A-game once again.
4. Chiefs’ wide receivers getting open
Photo by Kathryn Riley/Getty ImagesThe Jets’ front will give the Chiefs’ pass protection everything it can handle, and so will New York’s secondary. Cornerbacks Ahmad “Sauce” Gardner and D.J. Reed are the team’s top two corners and have helped the Jets allow only 6.4 yards per pass attempt.
It’s the most accomplished cornerback group the Chiefs’ wide receivers have faced, a group that has already struggled to create separation and find open windows against coverage. Physicality will be an important trait for Kansas City pass catchers this week.
“They play very, very hard. They’re physical,” Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy emphasized. “This is one of those games where you hear the cliche of going back to a dark alley and it’s going to be a fist fight… They are not just good on the front level, at the second level, the third level, they’re good in all three. They’re well coached.”
Dealing with physical coverage may be another reason for rookie wide receiver Rashee Rice to see more opportunity in the offense.
5. Who covers Garrett Wilson?
Photo by Cooper Neill/Getty ImagesOne of the biggest talking points around the Chiefs this week has been cornerback Trent McDuffie, as he is currently the highest-graded cornerback in the NFL, according to PFF.
Yet, the Chiefs have used cornerback L’Jarius Sneed as the player to shadow the opposing team’s No. 1 receiver. In Week 2, Sneed slowed down Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver Calvin Ridley. In Week 3, he was the primary player to cover Chicago Bears wideout D.J. Moore.
This week, the Chiefs have another big-time pass catcher to prepare for.
“The wideout (Garrett) Wilson is a game-breaking type of guy,” Daly told reporters on Thursday. “He’s explosive, he’s dynamic. When he gets that ball, he’s got a chance to go the distance every time he touches it.”
With Sneed playing more on the outside, it’s natural for him to get more of the matchups with No.1 wideouts — but don’t be surprised if the team mixes it up and uses McDuffie in one-on-one coverage more this week.

I wouldn’t expect 41 tonight. The Jets have a very good defense. But the Chiefs should win by around 10 IMO
