Chiefs:“It’s all heart at the end of the day. In the second half, it [comes down] to who wants it more. … You have to go out there and just want it. I thought the guys did a great job of that today. Even when it wasn’t pretty, they made stuff happen.”
–Chiefs Quarterback Patrick Mahomes
Packers:
“Just taking it week by week right now. We need to win every week is the mindset we have. This [Lions game] was a huge win that we needed.”

[/TABLE]The Kansas City Chiefs travel to historic Lambeau Field this weekend for a prime-time battle against the Green Bay Packers.
Here are five things to keep in mind heading into game day.
1. Here’s a look at the final injury report for both teams.
The Chiefs are in good shape injury-wise heading into Sunday’s game as every member of the active roster participated in Friday’s practice. Only tailback Jerick McKinnon (groin), who is listed as “Questionable” for the game, carries an injury designation into Sunday among players on the active roster.
Linebacker Nick Bolton, who remains on Injured Reserve due to a wrist injury suffered in Week 7, also began practicing this week. Bolton won’t be activated prior to Sunday’s game, but he appears to be making progress in his return to the field.
As for the Packers, starting tailback Aaron Jones will miss his second-straight game due to a knee injury. Green Bay also listed eight players as “Questionable,” including starting cornerback Jaire Alexander (shoulder), starting linebacker De’Vondre Campbell (neck), starting safety Rudy Ford (biceps/groin), and rookie wide receivers Jayden Reed (chest) and Dontayvion Wicks (knee).
Reed is the Packers’ leading receiver this season with 497 yards through the air. Wicks has also proven dangerous, averaging 16.6 yards-per-catch. Defensively, Campbell missed last week’s game vs. Detroit due to his neck injury, while Alexander hasn’t played since Week 8 and Ford hasn’t played since Week 9. It’s possible that the Packers’ defense could be getting all three players back for Sunday. Safety Darnell Savage, who started each of the Packers’ first six games before heading to Injured Reserve with a calf injury, is also listed as “Questionable” for Sunday.
2. Can rookie wide receiver Rashee Rice stack another strong performance?Rice compiled the best game of his young career last week, catching eight passes for 107 yards and a touchdown. Four of his eight receptions picked up a fresh set of downs, and two of those catches took place on third down. The rookie wide receiver now has 44 catches for 527 yards and five touchdowns – the third-most among all rookies – and according to Pro Football Focus’ metrics, only the Rams’ Puka Nacua and the Texans’ Tank Dell have earned higher grades among rookie wide outs.
It’s all to say that Rice has been a solid contributor as a rookie, and following a game in which he rewarded the coaching staff for playing him on 67 percent of the Chiefs’ offensive snaps – his second-highest usage rate of the season – the challenge now is for Rice to stack it with another strong game.
The Packers have been one of the league’s better defenses against the pass this year, holding opponents to just over 200 passing yards-per-game on average. They’ve also yielded just 15 passing plays of 25 or more yards, the fourth-fewest in the NFL. Green Bay has largely struggled on third down, however, surrendering conversions at a 40 percent clip. Rice was excellent on third down last week, and his ability to do the same on Sunday could prove critical.
3. Packers’ edge rusher Rashan Gary has four sacks in his last two games.
Gary has been right in the middle of the Packers’ mid-season resurgence of late, racking up four sacks in his last two games. Gary now has 8.5 sacks on the year, accounting for 33 percent of the Packers’ team sack total all by himself.Defensive lineman Kenny Clark has also been productive lately, recording a team-leading 17 pressures over the Packers’ last four games, and rookie defensive lineman Karl Brooks is coming off his best game as a professional in which he recorded five pressures vs. Detroit.
The Chiefs have allowed the fewest sacks in the NFL this year with just 14, including only one last week. It sets up a strong matchup between one of the league’s best offensive lines and a pass-rush that seems to be heating up at the right time.
It will also be interesting to see how often the Packers elect to blitz Chiefs’ quarterback Patrick Mahomes on Sunday. Green Bay has blitzed this season at the eighth-highest frequency in the NFL, doing so 31.2 percent of the time. For context, the Chiefs – whose defense has earned a reputation for its tendency to blitz – have done so at a 34.4 percent clip this year.
Mahomes has been blitzed on more than 10 occasions in a single game just five times this year, and on those dropbacks, he has completed 75 percent of his passes for 439 yards, five touchdowns and just one interception. Green Bay has blitzed opposing quarterbacks 10 or more times in seven of its 11 games, including a tally of 17 blitzes last week.

4. Quarterback Jordan Love seems to have found a groove in recent weeks.
Love is in the midst of his best stretch of football as a professional, throwing eight touchdowns to only two interceptions over the Packers’ last four games. His completion percentage (65.2% to 57.7%), yards-per-attempt average (8.02 to 6.38) and passer rating (103.1 to 78.2) are also all significantly improved during that stretch when compared to his first seven games of the season.
One area in which Love has shown growth of late is his performance under pressure. From Week 1 through Week 8, Pro Football Focus graded Love as the league’s fourth-worst passer while under pressure among quarterbacks with 150+ dropbacks. He was under pressure on 33 percent of his dropbacks during that time, completing 48 percent of his passes for one touchdown and two interceptions while averaging 3.7 yards-per-attempt.
Since Week 9, however, Love has been Pro Football Focus’ fourth-best passer when pressured among quarterbacks with 100+ dropbacks. In those situations, he has completed 52 percent of his throws for two touchdowns and one interception while averaging a whopping 10 yards-per-attempt.
In simple terms, Love has thrown the ball further downfield – and done so with success – when in the face of pressure over his last four games. It’s no coincidence that the Packers are 3-1 in those matchups.
5. Tailback Isiah Pacheco is a player to watch on Sunday night.
The Packers own the No. 10 scoring defense in the NFL, but it’s worth mentioning that they’re allowing 135.2 rushing yards-per-game on average – the sixth-highest mark in the league. In fact, Green Bay has surrendered at least 140 yards on the ground in six of its 11 games. Only Cincinnati has more such games (7). That trend has persisted even during the Packers’ recent resurgence, too, as Green Bay allowed 150 rushing yards to the Chargers in Week 11 and 140 rushing yards to Detroit last week. With all of that in mind, Sunday’s game could be an opportunity for running back Isiah Pacheco to stack another strong performance. Pacheco tallied 89 yards from scrimmage (including 55 rushing yards) and two touchdowns last week against Las Vegas, establishing a physicality that seemed to keep the Raiders’ defense off balance throughout the latter portion of the game.
Pacheco now has 669 rushing yards on the season – the 11th-most in the NFL – and his performance on Sunday could be the difference in the end.

from The Associated PressChiefs try to build off latest comeback as they face surging Packers
By AP Wire
Fri, Dec 1, 2023, 6:12 PM CSTGREEN BAY, Wis. — After one of their trademark come-from-behind victories last week in Las Vegas, Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs hope their rally sparks a surge that can help the defending Super Bowl champions make another postseason run.
The next step comes Sunday night when the AFC West-leading Chiefs (8-3) visit the improving Green Bay Packers (5-6).
Kansas City is coming off a 31-17 triumph over the Raiders in which the Chiefs responded after falling behind 14-0 in the first 18 minutes.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid, whose team made plenty of notable comebacks during its two recent Super Bowl championship seasons, liked the way his players didn’t flinch amid adversity.
“They picked everything up and said, ‘We have to play better,’” Reid said. “And I hear things on the sideline, so I get a feel most people don’t hear. The guys, the leaders were really encouraging guys, and I thought all that was positive.”

That comeback ended a string of three straight games in which Kansas City failed to score after halftime, and it provided a glimpse of how the Chiefs must play the rest of the regular season and into the playoffs.
Green Bay had its own issues earlier this season, as the Packers failed to score a single first-half touchdown during one five-game stretch.
But just like the Chiefs turned around their second-half woes, the Packers are doing a better job of moving the ball early on. They scored touchdowns on their first two drives in a 29-22 Thanksgiving Day victory at Detroit.

“I just think we’re doing a better job of finding our rhythm, finding our flow as an offense,” Packers wide receiver Christian Watson said. “It took us a little too long early in the season to find that, to find that rhythm. Now I think we’re connecting a little bit better as an offense and finding it a little quicker.”
This marks the Chiefs’ first regular-season visit to Green Bay since 2015, which means it will be the first time Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes has played at Lambeau Field. The two-time Super Bowl champion was here for a 2019 preseason game in which he didn’t play.
“I’m extremely excited for it,” Mahomes said. “I’ve watched it my whole entire life. I know it’s going to be a hostile environment and loud, a lot like what Arrowhead is like to other teams. If you love football, you love Lambeau Field, and I’m excited to play a game there.”

LOVE VS. CHIEFS AGAIN
Packers quarterback Jordan Love faced the Chiefs in his first career start in 2021, when a positive COVID-19 test sidelined Aaron Rodgers. The Packers lost that game 13-7 as Love struggled to deal with all the pressure the Chiefs were putting on him.
“It was a good learning experience for me, just being able to see those experiences, see where I need to be going with the ball,” Love said. “I watched it back that offseason and was able to learn a lot just from that film.”
CELEBRITY WATCH
TV viewers could end up seeing plenty of shots in the stands Sunday night with the possibility that pop superstar Taylor Swift, who’s in a relationship with Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, and Olympic champion gymnast Simone Biles, who’s married to Green Bay safety Jonathan Owens, could be on hand for the game.
Swift hasn’t attended the last two Chiefs games due to conflicts with her tour schedule, which is currently on a break. Biles has attended multiple Packers home games and expressed her approval via social media last week when Owens scored his first career touchdown on a 27-yard fumble return.

Chiefs wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling played his first four seasons in Green Bay, where he provided a deep threat but struggled to catch the ball consistently. He has had the same issues in Kansas City.
Valdes-Scantling has just 15 receptions for 248 yards and dropped a potential go-ahead touchdown pass in the final minutes of a 21-17 loss to the Eagles in their Super Bowl rematch a couple of weeks ago.

SACK ATTACK
The Chiefs are tied for fourth in the NFL with 37 sacks. They have three players with more than five sacks: George Karlaftis (, Chris Jones (7½) and Mike Danna (5½).
The Packers have their own exceptional pass rusher in Rashan Gary, who had three sacks in the Thanksgiving victory at Detroit.

DANGEROUS IN DECEMBER
The Packers are 15-0 in December games during Matt LaFleur’s coaching tenure. That represents the second-longest December winning streak in NFL history. The Chargers won 18 straight from 2006-09, well before their move to Los Angeles.

from ArrowheadPride.comA matchup in a historic venue comes at an important time for both Kansas City and Green Bay.
By Ron Kopp | @Ron_Kopp | Dec 2, 2023, 1:00pm CST
Photo by Kevin Sabitus/Getty ImagesIt has been more than eight years since the (8-3) Kansas City Chiefs have traveled north to play a regular-season game against the (5-6) Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field. But that’s what we’re getting in the Week 13 episode of “Sunday Night Football” on NBC. Kickoff is set for 7:20 p.m. Arrowhead Time.
Heading into the weekend, DraftKings Sportsbook has Kansas City as a six-point favorite — just a one-score difference because Green Bay has recently been coming on strong. After a 2-5 start, the team has won three of its last four matchups — including a controlling victory over the Detroit Lions on Thanksgiving Day.
The momentum the Packers have gathered is coupled with 10 days of rest, giving them an ideal opportunity to get to .500 — and be firmly in the NFC playoff picture. But on the flip side, the Chiefs know that any loss could be the difference between homefield advantage throughout the postseason — and making road trips.
I have five things to watch in this primetime contest:
1. Trying to rattle Jordan Love
Photo by David Eulitt/Getty ImagesAfter the Chiefs’ defense had a spotty performance against a rookie quarterback in Week 12, the unit will face another first-year starter: Green Bay’s Jordan Love, who will be making only his 13th career start.
His first came during his rookie season in 2021: a 13-7 loss to Kansas City. Even in that defeat, though, he made a positive impression on Chiefs’ defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo.
“I was impressed with him coming out of that game,” Spagnuolo reflected to reporters on Thursday. “I never thought he got rattled. We played really well defensively; we had some success… I came out of that game saying that he had something — [so] that you really couldn’t rattle him… Now I think they’re hitting their stride.”
This season, Love hasn’t had many chances to be rattled: among starting quarterbacks, he’s been sacked at the seventh-lowest rate — and has been pressured at the fifth-lowest rate.
The Packers’ scheme sets him up for success with quick releases and rhythm throws — but the longer he holds onto the ball, that changes: on dropbacks longer than 2.5 seconds, Love has completed only 53% of his passes — and eight of his 10 interceptions have come on such plays.
The Kansas City defense will be focused on disrupting his timing.
2. A repeat for Rashee Rice
Photo by Candice Ward/Getty ImagesThe career day that the second-round rookie wideout had in the 31-17 victory over the Las Vegas Raiders was exciting — and should be setting up a stretch where we consistently see Rice used like he was in Las Vegas: 10 targets, eight catches and 107 yards.
[IMG]https://scontent.fmci1-3.fna.fbcdn.net/v/t39.30808-6/407347943_7537071369653859_8599375350526942103_n.jpg?_nc_cat=108&ccb=1-7&_nc_sid=3635dc&_nc_ohc=oEvvqkyKz2wAX9xAgfS&_nc_ht=scontent.fmci1-3.fna&oh=00_AfC-nsWOW9jLAz3tR3YIHJvyBafvjS7kpisHLnyetBDMSw&oe=6570D8F5[/IMG]
Against the Raiders, the team relied on Rice in important situations — on two third downs, he had the primary route — and expanded its playbook for him: Rice played on the outside more often than he had all season.
Since the receivers around him have yet to prove worthy of more than complementary roles, the Chiefs essentially have no excuse: in the passing game, they must lean on Rice (and tight end Travis Kelce) as their predominant targets.
The Packers’ cornerback Jaire Alexander has been a limited participant in practice this week — and is questionable to play after missing three games with a shoulder injury. Even if he plays, the vulnerable Green Bay secondary might give Rice the opportunity for a big game.
Continued in next post~~~12/03/2023 at 10:08 am #10889623. Defending downfield throws
Photo by Kevin Sabitus/Getty ImagesThe Packers’ passing game wants to work the ball downfield: among starting quarterbacks, Love has the league’s highest average depth-of-target (9.6 yards) — and is tied with Buffalo Bills’ quarterback Josh Allen for the most attempts at least 20 yards downfield.
Green Bay’s deep-threat group is led by second-year wide receiver Christian Watson — but so far, rookie wideout Jayden Reed has outproduced Watson on deep passes. Rookie tight end Luke Musgrave has four receptions on deep throws.
While it is a young unit, it’s one in which Spagnuolo is recognizing gradual improvement.
“I was telling our defensive back group this yesterday: their wide receiver corps is a little bit like our defensive backs were last year,” said the coordinator. “Everybody was saying they were young, they were rookies, and as the season went… The quarterback and the wideouts, as the season has gone on, [are] getting better and better.”
4. Winning up front on offense
Photo by Mario Hommes/DeFodi Images via Getty ImagesThe Kansas City offense has looked its best when the offensive line is winning in the trenches, paving the way for chunk runs and giving quarterback Patrick Mahomes time in the pocket. Two weeks after facing the challenge of the Philadelphia Eagles’ front, the Packers’ defensive line can also cause problems.
“They’re lengthy,” Chiefs’ offensive coordinator Matt Nagy told reporters on Thursday. “They have bookends on the edge with [Rashan] Gary and Preston Smith — then with [Kenny] Clark on the inside… Those are vet guys that have been there. It starts there, with stopping the run and creating pressure for the quarterback.”
Gary has amassed 8.5 sacks this year, while Smith and Clark have combined for nine. Green Bay’s defensive line will challenge Kansas City’s pass protection.
5. Managing the running back’s workload
Photo by Candice Ward/Getty ImagesWith running back Jerick McKinnon designated as questionable for the game, starting running back Isiah Pacheco is trending for more and more touches. It’s deserving — and many times, it’s what the offense has needed to get going.
There is, however, a lot of season left for a position group that seems as thin as it ever has during the last few years. Running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire has been running hard — but not effectively enough to spell Pacheco. That’s why I believe running back La’Mical Perine needs more snaps — sooner rather than later.
That could happen against the Packers, who have faced the third-most rushing attempts per game — and have allowed the eighth-highest yards per rush (4.4).
