Chiefs:“Listen, this league is a lot about the quarterbacks, right? Our goal and what we talk about all the time is, ‘Let’s just get the ball back to our quarterback.’ That’s our job. And the only way to do that is make sure their quarterback doesn’t do the things that he’s capable of doing.”
–Chiefs Defensive Coordinator Steve Spagnuolo
Ravens:
“I don’t like competing against [Patrick Mahomes] at all. He’s definitely a Hall of Famer. But I believe it’s just two greats — up-and-coming greats — just going toe to toe, like a heavyweight fight.”
–Ravens Quarterback Lamar Jackson

This is Lamar Jackson vs. Patrick Mahomes, the likely MVP this
season for a second time against a guy who has won two
already. The difference is Mahomes has Super Bowl rings, while
Jackson is just trying to get there. The Chiefs won a tough road game at Buffalo on Sunday, but
the defense had some issues with the Buffalo run game. If
that’s a problem against Jackson and the Ravens, it will be a
long day. Jackson will run it, but he will hit shots off it.I think that Chiefs defense will play better this week, which will
force Jackson to win it with his legs but mostly his right arm. He
is more than capable. As for Mahomes, he will be facing a defense that throws a lot of
looks at a quarterback. But he’s seen them all — and had
success against them all. I think he will be patient here as the
Chiefs run it and he takes his shots off the run. The Chiefs did a
nice job in protection last week, and that will carry over, thanks
to the run game.Look for both quarterbacks to play well, but I think the
postseason experience for Mahomes will shine through. Look for
the Chiefs to advance to another Super Bowl as Mahomes has
some late-game magic to win it.
The Kansas City Chiefs will take on the Baltimore Ravens this Sunday with a trip to Super Bowl LVIII on the line.
Here are five things to keep in mind heading into game day.
1. Here’s a look at the final injury report for both teams.
The Chiefs will be without left guard Joe Thuney (pectoral strain) and defensive tackle Derrick Nnadi (tricep) on Sunday due to injury. The absence of Thuney will almost certainly mean that veteran Nick Allegretti will slide in at left guard. Fortunately, Allegretti has 14 career starts at left guard during his career, including nine-straight starts at that spot during the 2020 season.
Kansas City also listed safety Mike Edwards (concussion protocol), running back Isiah Pacheco (ankle/toe), linebacker Willie Gay (neck) and wide receiver Kadarius Toney (hip) as “Questionable” for Sunday.
Update: Toney was downgraded to “Out” on Saturday morning.
As for the Ravens, it appears that All-Pro tight end Mark Andrews will make his return to the field after missing the last seven games due to an ankle injury. A name to watch will be cornerback Marlon Humphrey, who is listed as “Questionable” with a calf injury. Humphrey is a former All-Pro who started 10 games for the Ravens this year.
2. This matchup will be a clash between the top two scoring defenses in the NFL.
The Ravens (261) and Chiefs (271) ranked first and second, respectively, in terms of fewest offensive points allowed this season among all teams. The two teams also occupied the top two spots in terms of sacks, as the Ravens led the NFL with 60 while Kansas City checked in as a close second with 57.
Baltimore, specifically, held the opposition under 20 points in 11 of its 17 regular-season games this season, matching San Francisco for the most such performances in the league. Kansas City, meanwhile, was the only team in the league this year to not allow 30 points to an opponent. In fact, the Chiefs are the first team – including the playoffs – to hold the opposition under 25 points in 18 or more games since the 2013 Seattle Seahawks.
What’s interesting about the Ravens is that they rank sixth in total defense at 301.4 yards-allowed-per-game (while the Chiefs rank second), but they made up for it with their league-leading sack total, an NFL-most 31 takeaways and the league’s No. 2 red zone defense in terms of touchdowns allowed.
It’s all to say that ball security and red zone efficiency will be key for the Chiefs on Sunday in addition to their ability to run the football. As dominant as the Ravens have been defensively this year, Baltimore allowed the eighth-highest rushing average (4.48 yards-per-carry) of any team during the regular season. The Texans struggled to run the ball against Baltimore last week, but Kansas City is coming off a performance in which it racked up 146 yards on the ground. A similar outing on Sunday could prove be the difference in the end.
Lastly, one statistic that stands out among the rest when reviewing the Chiefs’ defense is their collective performance in the second halves of games. Kansas City allowed the fewest second-half points of any team in the NFL during the regular season (126), and now through two playoff games – against the league’s No. 1 and No. 4 total offenses, no less – the Chiefs have allowed a grand total of seven second-half points.
3. Baltimore led the league in both rushing attempts and rushing yards this season.
The Ravens’ offense, which ranked fourth in the league in points-per-game this season (28.4 points-per-game), was powered by the top rushing attack in the NFL. Baltimore led the league in rushing attempts (541) and rushing yards (2,661) this year, averaging a league-best 156.5 rushing yards-per-game.
That production was primarily split between tailback Gus Edwards (810 rushing yards) and quarterback Lamar Jackson, whose 841 rushing yards led all quarterbacks. In fact, Jackson broke off 29 runs of double-digit yardage this season – the sixth-most among all players, regardless of position – and recorded five such runs last week against Houston.
The Chiefs’ ability to stop both the Ravens’ downhill, designed runs and Jackson’s dynamic scrambling ability will be paramount on Sunday. For what it’s worth, Kansas City held Chicago – the league’s second-ranked rushing offense – to its fifth-lowest output of the season back in Week 3. Additionally, while the Chiefs yielded 124 rushing yards in the first half to Buffalo last week, the defense rallied to hold the Bills to just 58 rushing yards in the second half.
Buffalo also recorded a grand total of zero plays of 20+ yards against Kansas City last week, continuing a trend for a Chiefs’ defense that allowed the fewest such plays of any team in the NFL this season (46).
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=siHyh_qHPCc
4. The Chiefs’ offense hit on a number of big plays vs. Buffalo.
Kansas City’s offense was remarkably efficient last week, racking up 361 total yards and 27 points on just 47 offensive plays, averaging 7.7 yards-per-snap. For context, Buffalo tallied 368 yards and 24 points on 78 plays – a whopping 31 more than Kansas City.
The Chiefs achieved that feat by showing tremendous balance between the run (24 plays) and the pass (23 plays) while connecting on big plays throughout the contest. In fact, Kansas City connected on eight plays of 20+ yards, marking a season-best. Those big plays each occurred on either first or second down, too, limiting the Chiefs to only five third-down attempts in the contest.
Baltimore allowed 56 plays of 20+ yards this season, which ranked in the middle of the pack among all teams. Conversely, the Ravens’ 22 sacks on first down this year led the NFL. The Chiefs’ ability to create big plays, remain ahead of the chains and avoid third down – which they did quite effectively against Buffalo – will play a major role in determining how effective Baltimore’s pass-rush can be during Sunday’s game.
5. Kansas City is back in the AFC Championship Game for a sixth-straight year.
The Chiefs are headed to the AFC Championship Game for a sixth-straight season, which marks the second-longest stretch of consecutive appearances in either conference title game in league history. Only the New England Patriots, who went to eight-straight AFC Championship Games between 2011-18, tallied a longer stretch.
Quarterback Patrick Mahomes has been the man at the wheel for each of those runs, and despite checking in at just 28 years old, Mahomes already has the sixth-most postseason victories (13) of any quarterback in league history. Only Tom Brady (35), Joe Montana (16), Terry Bradshaw (14), John Elway (14) and Peyton Manning (14) have more, and with a win on Sunday, Mahomes would move into a tie for third on that list.
It’s all to say that the Chiefs are currently in the midst of one of the greatest runs of sustained success in NFL history, and with a spot in Super Bowl LVIII up for grabs on Sunday, Kansas City will aim to add to that legacy this weekend.

ASSOCIATED PRESSBALTIMORE (AP) — Patrick Mahomes has already defeated an impressive list of quarterbacks in the playoffs: Andrew Luck, Deshaun Watson, Ben Roethlisberger, Trevor Lawrence, Joe Burrow, Jalen Hurts, Tua Tagovailoa.
And of course, Josh Allen, who was eliminated for the third time by Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs last week.
One star AFC quarterback whom Mahomes has never run into in the postseason is Lamar Jackson. The Baltimore Ravens star could match Mahomes this season with his second MVP award — but is only now making his first appearance in the AFC championship game.
“He’s going to be the MVP for a reason,” Mahomes said. “He leads his team. He scores, he runs, he throws, he does whatever it takes to win, and that’s what the greats do. It’s a challenge for our defense, but also a great challenge for our offense to keep up.”
Mahomes and the Chiefs face that difficult task Sunday at Baltimore in the AFC title game. It’s their sixth consecutive year reaching this stage of the playoffs, but the first time in that span they’ll have to play it on the road.
The Chiefs are the defending Super Bowl champions. The Ravens have the NFL’s best record this season. It’s a fascinating matchup made even more so by the presence of Mahomes and Jackson.
Even if Jackson would be happy to avoid such a tough opponent.
“I don’t like competing against him at all,” Jackson said with a laugh. “He’s definitely a Hall of Famer. But I believe it’s just two greats — up-and-coming greats — just going toe to toe, like a heavyweight fight.”

ASSOCIATED PRESSThis is the first playoff matchup between former MVP quarterbacks who are both under 30.
That’s not to say Mahomes hasn’t been pushed in the quarterback-deep AFC. Allen has come close to knocking him off, and Burrow actually beat Mahomes in the AFC championship game two years ago before Mahomes won a rematch last season.
Jackson’s most recent matchup with Mahomes was a 36-35 win by the Ravens in September 2021. Mahomes won their meetings in each of the previous three seasons.
“Listen, this league is a lot about the quarterbacks, right? We’re fortunate in this game we have two of the best ones in the league,” Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo said. “Our goal and what we talk about all the time is, ‘Let’s just get the ball back to our quarterback.’ That’s our job. And the only way to do that is make sure their quarterback doesn’t do the things that he’s capable of doing.”
Baltimore (14-4) reached this round with a 34-10 win over Houston. Kansas City (12-6) beat Allen and Buffalo 27-24 last weekend — with Taylor Swift in attendance watching her boyfriend, Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce.
That romance could be headed to the Super Bowl next month — but the Ravens will do their best to end Kansas City’s run.

ASSOCIATED PRESSLONG TIME COMING
This is the first time Baltimore is hosting the AFC title game since the Colts beat the Oakland Raiders in January 1971. The current Baltimore franchise has made it to this game four times previously, all on the road, and won twice on the way to Super Bowl titles.
This is Baltimore’s fourth time reaching the game under coach John Harbaugh, but the Ravens haven’t been this far since their Super Bowl run 11 years ago. Kansas City, of course, has made the AFC title game an annual part of its schedule lately.
“They’ve been in this situation many times. They’ve played in this game. I think they’re a very experienced team,” Harbaugh said. “They’re a hardened team. They’ve been through a lot. That experience always is helpful.”
POPS GOES PACHECOChiefs running back Isiah Pacheco, affectionately known as “Pops” by teammates, has been a big reason why they have won their first two playoff games.
The second-year standout has run for 186 yards and two scores in wins over Miami and Buffalo, and his success between the tackles has opened up a downfield passing game that has been bottled up all season.
“I think leaning into him, leaning into our offensive line and what they do best is extremely important to our team,” Mahomes said. “It’s not always going to be high-flying, but we’re going to do whatever we can to win the football game at the end of the day. And if that’s running the ball, throwing the ball, whatever that is.”
TESTED
Of the Ravens’ 13 regular-season victories this season, a record 10 were over teams that finished above .500.
“I think that we just do what we’re signed up to do, and that’s play for each other, at the end of the day. Give everything that we’ve got and try to send a message, play in and play out,” linebacker Roquan Smith said. “No bigger stage to do that than the game coming up this week.”

GET A KICK OF THISSpecial teams is usually a factor in the postseason — look at the misses by Buffalo and Green Bay last week. And the Ravens and Chiefs have two of the game’s best kickers.
Justin Tucker is going to his seventh Pro Bowl in 12 seasons for Baltimore, while Harrison Butker was 33 of 35 on field-goal attempts for Kansas City this season and is perfect so far in the playoffs.
“He’s been there for such a long career, no injuries, and he’s made it look effortless,” Butker said of Tucker, whom he recalls watching on Youtube as far back as high school. “He’s kind of changed the kicking game, and pushed us younger guys to say, ‘It’s possible to make 65-yard field goals and these game-winning kicks.’ He’s just an artist.”
INJURIES
Ravens tight end Mark Andrews (ankle) hasn’t played since November, but he has been practicing this week. Cornerback Marlon Humphrey (calf) also returned to practice after missing last weekend’s win over Houston.
Pacheco (ankle/toe) and guard Joe Thuney (pectoral) missed practice time for Kansas City this week.

from ArrowheadPride.comBaltimore is the latest, greatest AFC foe looking to stop Kansas City from reaching another Super Bowl.
By Ron Kopp | @Ron_Kopp | Jan 27, 2024, 12:00pm CST
Photo by Rob Carr/Getty ImagesFor the sixth consecutive year, the NFL’s Championship weekend will be prominent in Chiefs Kingdom. The (13-6) Kansas City Chiefs will travel to play the (14-4) Baltimore Ravens in the AFC Championship. The battle for the Lamar Hunt trophy will occur at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore, Maryland; kickoff is set for 2:00 PM Arrowhead time.
The Ravens stand as four-point favorites heading into the weekend, according to DraftKings Sportsbook. That reflects both teams’ seasons: Baltimore has been a consistently dominant contender, while the Chiefs had to turn things around to get back to this stage.
The winning formula Kansas City found will be put to the ultimate test against the Ravens. I have five things to watch in the AFC Title game:
1. Matching Baltimore’s defensive physicality
Photo by Timothy T Ludwig/Getty ImagesThe Ravens’ defense is great, regardless of how you look at it. The team allowed a league-low 16.5 points per game during the regular season. No team forced more turnovers or earned more sacks than Baltimore. The average pass attempt gained only 5.9 yards against the unit.
“They’re good all the way around,” Chiefs’ head coach Andy Reid emphasized on Thursday. “A good back end with the secondary and linebackers, fast and good tacklers. Then, the front is strong. They’re an all-around defense.”
It starts with the Ravens’ two All-Pro defenders: linebacker Roquan Smith and second-year safety Kyle Hamilton. They will be the key to covering the middle of the field against tight end Travis Kelce and wide receiver Rashee Rice.
“They’re going to play physical, they’re going to play fast,” Chiefs’ quarterback Patrick Mahomes detailed during a press conference Thursday. “When you think about the Ravens, it’s defense. They’re going to fly around and try to dictate tempo; that’s just who they are. Our job is to go out there and play our game, play fast, play physical as well, and match their tempo.”
The player most able to set that tone is running back Isiah Pacheco, who missed practice Wednesday and Thursday with a toe injury. He returned Friday and will need another attacking performance from the offensive line to help bring the fight to Baltimore.
2. Matching Baltimore’s offensive physicality
Denny Medley-USA TODAY SportsThe Ravens can also throw the punches on offense, using a league-leading average of 157 rushing yards per game to wear down defenses. The team rushed for 229 yards in the Divisional round win.
That will be a problem for a Chiefs’ defense that allowed 182 rushing yards to the Buffalo Bills, constantly losing the battle at the line of scrimmage on handoffs. It put the Bills’ offense in too many advantageous positions; Chiefs’ defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo is preparing to better defend that this week.
” We can’t get into that kind of game, those long drives like that with Baltimore,” Spagnuolo told reporters on Thursday. “I know exactly what [Ravens’ head coach John Harbaugh] is telling them… to come right at you, whether it’s run or pass, just keep bullying their way downfield. We need to be prepared for that and find a way to match that with the same kind of aggressive play.”
One solution is a stronger, more stout game from the front seven — but the Chiefs’ secondary also needs to emphasize the aggression. Kansas City’s defensive backfield outweighs the Ravens’ receiving corps in talent, and the Chiefs need to utilize that by trusting them in physical man coverage.
Continued in next post~~~01/28/2024 at 8:09 am #1089688~~~continued from previous post
3. Dealing with Lamar Jackson
Photo by Rob Carr/Getty ImagesThe physical pass coverage could disrupt the dropback rhythm of Ravens’ quarterback Lamar Jackson, who is a very disciplined pocket passer. He will wait for the open throw downfield, so if the Chiefs’ coverage prevents that, the underneath players will need to account for a scrambling Jackson.
The unit implemented a similar strategy against the Buffalo Bills and quarterback Josh Allen, but Spagnuolo expects improved containment.
“We certainly need to defend this quarterback better than we did last week to make things go the way we want,” Spagnuolo noted.
The schemed runs by Jackson will also be a focus point: in the Divisional round, Jackson’s four designed carries totaled 52 yards. Overall, he moved the chains seven times with his feet. This is where linebacker Willie Gay plays a key role — if he can: he is questionable after not practicing on Friday, a downgrade from limited participation due to the neck injury.
4. Generate big plays on offense with scheme
Photo by David Eulitt/Getty ImagesThe Chiefs have benefitted from playing injured defenses the last two weeks, being able to beat them with a simplified game plan. The Ravens won’t make it that easy this week; wide receiver Rashee Rice previewed the matchup on Thursday.
“I see an aggressive defense,” Rice shared. “They have great corners, they have great size… they are really good at rallying to the ball. We just have to make our catches and be ready to get tackled.”
To open up space for Chiefs’ pass catchers, the play calling will need to feature plenty of pre-snap motion and misdirection; an aggressive group of defenders can be exploited with eye candy, using that same aggression against them.
5. Limiting the Ravens’ explosive plays
Photo by Patrick Smith/Getty ImagesAgainst the Buffalo Bills, the Chiefs’ defense bent but did not break.
“The best thing we did last week… was limit the explosive passes,” Spagnuolo reflected with reporters. “It makes them matriculate down the field; hopefully we can make a play along the way.”
The lack of familiarity with Baltimore could make that harder this week: the Chiefs haven’t played the Ravens since a 36-35 loss in Week 2 of 2021, but Spagnuolo still remembers the forgettable performance.
“We have to get them in passing downs,” Spags asserted. “Last time we played this group, I know it was a different offensive coordinator, we only had 11 third downs, and five or six of them were one to four [yards to go]. That needs to change to have a chance at success.”
