[/TABLE]The Kansas City Chiefs will look to make it four victories in a row on Sunday afternoon with a tilt against the Minnesota Vikings.
Here are five things to keep in mind heading into game day.
1. Here’s a look at the final injury report for both teams.
The Chiefs officially listed three players as “Questionable” heading into Sunday’s game, with those being linebacker Nick Bolton (ankle), offensive lineman Wanya Morris (hip) and defensive tackle Matt Dickerson (knee). For what it’s worth, all three players participated in Friday’s practice, although both Bolton and Dickerson were listed as “limited.”
If Bolton can’t go for a third-straight week, linebacker Drue Tranquill will likely once again handle a larger role.
As for the Vikings, they officially listed four players as “Questionable” on Friday: linebacker Brian Asamoah (toe), safety Lewis Cine (hamstring), outside linebacker Marcus Davenport (ankle) and quarterback Nick Mullens (back). The most notable of those designations is Davenport, who played 63 percent of the Vikings’ defensive snaps and recorded a sack in Week 4.
Additionally, Vikings’ starting center Garrett Bradbury is set to play on Sunday after missing the last three weeks with a back injury.
2. No team blitzes more than the Vikings.
Minnesota has blitzed at a 57 percent clip this season, which is by far the highest rate in the NFL and more than seven percentage points more than the next-closest team. The Vikings blitzed Buccaneers’ quarterback Baker Mayfield 21 times in Week 1, Eagles’ quarterback Jalen Hurts 16 times in Week 2, Chargers’ quarterback Justin Herbert a staggering 42 times in Week 3, and Panthers’ quarterback Bryce Young 18 times in Week 4.
Conversely, Chiefs’ quarterback Patrick Mahomes has been blitzed the least of any quarterback in the NFL this season at a rate of just 14.8 percent. No team has blitzed Mahomes more than 10 times in a single game this year, and when looking back at last season, Mahomes threw a league-most 17 touchdowns vs. the blitz. It sets up a fascinating decision for the Vikings and Defensive Coordinator Brian Flores, who blitzed Mahomes on 59 percent of his dropbacks when Flores was the Dolphins’ head coach in 2020.
Interestingly enough, despite Minnesota’s lofty blitz rate this season, the Vikings have the fifth-fewest total pressures (57) of any team. They still feature a notable pass-rush, however, led by star edge rusher Danielle Hunter, whose five sacks rank fifth in the NFL. Additionally, Minnesota tallied a season-high five sacks vs. Carolina last week.
3. Minnesota features an explosive offense with numerous playmakers.
The Vikings have racked up some big numbers this season, as quarterback Kirk Cousins leads the NFL in completions (108) and passing touchdowns (11) while wide receiver Justin Jefferson tops the league in receiving yards (543). As a team, Minnesota owns the most passing plays of 20+ yards in the NFL (19), amassing the league’s No. 9 total offense at 370.8 yards-per-game.
Their attack goes beyond just Jefferson, too, as rookie wide receiver Jordan Addison and fellow wide receiver K.J. Osborn are each averaging more than 14 yards-per-reception this season.
It’s worth pointing out, however, that Minnesota has turned the ball over a league-most 11 times this season. Specifically, a league-most three of those turnovers have taken place in the red zone.
Regardless, Kansas City – which has allowed less than half of opponent red zone trips to result in touchdowns this season – will aim to continue that trend on Sunday.

4. The Chiefs’ rushing attack was outstanding last week.
Kansas City piled up 204 rushing yards vs. New York last week, marking the eighth-most for any team in a single game this season and the Chiefs’ most since Week 6 of the 2020 campaign. The man behind the bulk of that yardage was tailback Isiah Pacheco, who set career-bests in rushing yards (115), rushes of 10+ yards (4) and total yards from scrimmage (158).
It’s worth noting that Minnesota has been successful defending the run this year, as the Vikings are surrendering just 3.5 yards-per-carry despite facing the fourth-most rushing attempts (127) of any team. The Vikings allowed Philadelphia to tally a whopping 259 rushing yards against them in Week 3, but in their other three games combined, opponents have recorded just 186 rushing yards.
5. Kansas City hasn’t allowed more than 21 points in a game this season.
The Chiefs’ defense has been the most consistently dominant group in the NFL this season, as they are the only team in the league to hold opponents under 22 points in each of their four games. Additionally, Kansas City is also the only team to not allow the opposition to score more than 18 offensive points in a single game this year.
Minnesota may very well be Kansas City’s toughest test yet in terms of offensive firepower, but as they have demonstrated all season long, the Chiefs have proven to be up for the challenge.

(AP Photo/Adam Hunger)There’s only one team in the NFL that Patrick Mahomes has yet to beat.
The Minnesota Vikings, it figures, are the only one he’s never faced.
Matching up with the two-time NFL MVP and his defending champion Kansas City Chiefs is hardly a recipe for maintaining the momentum generated last week by their vulnerable defense, but the Vikings of course don’t get to choose their schedule.
What players with any pride would want it any other way? It’s time for the team that won 13 games and the NFC North last season to show it can still be a factor in 2023 and keep those long-frustrated fans from obsessing over next year’s draft position.
Playing the Chiefs (3-1) ought to be as accurate of a measuring stick as the Vikings (1-3) could find for the first weekend in October.
“You want to play against the best,” Vikings safety Harrison Smith said, “and these guys certainly have been that in recent history.”
With two Super Bowl titles in his first five seasons as the starter, all those statistical accomplishments and his unique blend of fearlessness and improvisation that has gone a long way toward redefining quarterback play for a new generation, Mahomes doesn’t have much left to accomplish on the field.
Defeating the Vikings to complete the checklist of 31 other teams would be an impressive feat, considering half of the league only appears on the schedule every four years in the NFL’s formula for interconference competition.

(AP Photo/Rusty Jones)“I just want to win every week,” said Mahomes, who is 67-17 in the regular season and 11-3 in the playoffs as a starter. “It’s not necessarily beating this team because I haven’t played them. It’s going in with the mentality to do what I need to win the game.”
When the Chiefs beat the Vikings in 2019, Matt Moore was behind center while Mahomes recovered from a dislocated kneecap. Though Mahomes has lost to Indianapolis in his only two regular-season matchups, he and the Chiefs beat the Colts in his first career start in the playoffs.
“Right now, we’re just all focused on trying to get things right,” coach Andy Reid said, “but it is an amazing stat for him for sure.”
The Chiefs are favored by 5½ points, according to FanDuel Sportsbook odds, but even with a defense that ranks just 21st in the league in passing yards allowed the Vikings might well be catching their opponent at the right time in what’s sure to be a raucous U.S. Bank Stadium.

FILE – Fans cheer after Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce (87) scored a touchdown during the first half of an NFL football game against the Green Bay Packers Sunday, Nov. 7, 2021, in Kansas City, Mo. Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce have remained mum about their status since the pop superstar began attending the Kansas City Chiefs tight end’s football games. Still, the NFL wants in on the fun, with a team of folks monitoring social media to see where it could be part of the phenomenon as various memes and trends took off. (AP Photo/Charlie Riedel, File)With a wide receiver group still trying to find its way, Mahomes has thrown four interceptions over four games and is only 15th in the NFL in passer rating (92.0).
“I have to put us in better positions and make better decisions so guys can go out there and make plays for me,” Mahomes said.
PICKING HIS SPOTS
Mahomes isn’t feared for his speed, but his ability to use his feet has still been a useful tool in Kansas City’s offense. He showed that in last season’s playoffs, when his scramble set up the winning field goal against Cincinnati in the AFC championship game and again last week when a 25-yard run on third-and-22 kept alive the Chiefs’ final drive to seal a 23-20 victory over the Jets.
“He’s got a good feel for the coverage, who is dropping out of there and the time element that is involved with that,” Reid said, “and he’s smart when he does it in certain situations. He knows he can do it, and other times it’s not going to be available.”
HELP ON DEFENSE
The Chiefs hope to have linebacker Nick Bolton (ankle), who is responsible for setting the defense, and cornerback Jaylen Watson (shoulder) back from injuries this week. Bolton’s absence from the past two games has been noticeable, and missing Watson has minimized the depth in the secondary. The Chiefs could use their full complement of defensive backs to deal with Vikings superstar Justin Jefferson.
“It’s hard to stop him play after play,” safety Mike Edwards said. “If he gets a 5-yard catch, he can turn 5 yards into 60. We have to stop the explosive gains, and we’ll be good.”
HELPING HAND
Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce is apparently not too preoccupied with Taylor Swift to mentor his young teammates. Wide receiver Rashee Rice singled out the All-Pro this week for helping him learn how to identify defenses, including ways to escape the line of scrimmage against man-to-man coverage and where the soft spots should be in zones.
“He’s always pulling me aside, during games, during practices,” said Rice, a rookie from SMU who was drafted in the second round. “We get a lot of good looks out here.”
LINE SHUFFLE
Vikings center Garrett Bradbury, one of only seven players remaining who played against the Chiefs in 2019, is on track to return from a back injury that knocked him out of the season opener. With guards Ezra Cleveland and Ed Ingram leaving room for improvement, the Vikings have also begun to work newcomer Dalton Risner into the mix during practice. This would seem to be the right time for Risner to at least rotate in or take over as a starter.
“When you add a player like Dalton in-season, you want to give him an opportunity,” coach Kevin O’Connell said.

Jay Biggerstaff-USA TODAY SportsOn Sunday, the 3-1 Kansas City Chiefs will head north to take on the 1-3 Minnesota Vikings in the NFL’s Week 5. Now tied for fifth in scoring defense, the Chiefs will face a test from the Vikings’ high-powered passing attack.
Minnesota boasts the league’s most passing touchdowns (11) and is fourth in passing yards (1,149). With quarterback Kirk Cousins leading the charge, the team’s pass-catching unit is stacked. It includes superstar wideout Justin Jefferson, Pro Bowl tight end T.J. Hockenson and two rising wide receivers: K.J. Osborn and rookie Jordan Addison.
While the Chiefs’ secondary will have its hands full, the defense will have an advantage in one key area: the defensive line.
Creating pressure
While Cousins is middle of the road with sacks taken (10) as well as sacks taken on pass attempts (6%), he has faced pressure at the league’s fifth-highest rate.
The Chiefs’ defense has been a middle-of-the-road unit in total sacks — 10 through the first four games — but its pressure rate of 29.9% is the league’s third-best mark.
Sacks draw all the attention and get all the glamor, of course. But pressure on Cousins could very well be a key factor in the game.
Attacking the middle
Let to right, the Minnesota offensive line has been manned by Christian Darrisaw, Ezra Cleveland, Austin Schlottman, Ed Ingram and Brian O’Neill. Usual starting center Garrett Bradbury has been down with an injury — but this week, he returned to full practice participation. He is expected to play.
Darrisaw and O’Neill are both quality starting tackles — but to say the least, the Vikings’ interior offensive line has been subpar.
Carolina Panthers defensive lineman Yetur Gross-Matos is a tweener — a player who is too small to play the interior on every down, but not quick enough to be an every-down player from the edge, either. Where he does find playing time is as an interior pass rusher.
On this play, he uses his superior length and quickness to beat Ingram in the B gap. He hits Cousins, whose offline pass is intercepted.
In a similar situation earlier in the game, he picked on Cleveland.
Here, Gross-Matos uses a quick hand-swipe off the snap to win the B gap and out-leverage Cleveland, pushing him into the backfield and forcing Cousins into a quick checkdown throw.
In this instance, the defender didn’t do enough to force a sack (or even a quarterback hit). It was, however, enough to prevent Cousins from looking deep downfield and force him into a short completion.
While Gross-Matos is having a fine year, Kansas City will have better options for creating pressure in the middle of the field. It is likely the Vikings will base their entire protection plan on where Kansas City defensive tackle Chris Jones lines up — which could create a chance for Mike Danna to continue his hot season.

His combination of power, leverage and quickness has allowed him to feast on slower, stockier guards. While he will have an advantage of quickness over Ingram, it is also likely he can overpower Cleveland.
Danna won’t be alone. Defensive tackle Tershawn Wharton will also be in the mix — while defensive ends George Karlaftis and Felix Anudike-Uzomah could also shake things up by rushing from the interior, throwing a wrench in the Vikings’ pass protection.
It will be hard for Jones to find many one-on-one situations, but he will have a few chances.
Finding the matchup
In just 53% of the defensive snaps, Jones has amassed 3.5 sacks and seven pressures. To make things even more interesting, his sacks (and the majority of his pressures) have come from the outside.
So far, Kansas City’s plan for Jones has been simple: find the matchup Jones likes and let him go to work. It would be tempting to let Jones go after Ingram and Cleveland — but almost without question, those will be situations where Minnesota will slide their protection toward Jones, making him less effective.
So some creativity will be in order.
Jones has shown he can beat some inexperienced tackles — but on Sunday, it is likely that the Chiefs will look for ways to isolate him in one-on-one situations where he can match up against Bradbury (returning from injury) or bully the Vikings’ tackles with power.
If the Chiefs can get Jones into such a situation, it would probably involve players walking up on the line of scrimmage to keep the offensive line guessing.
That’s what the Los Angeles Chargers do on this play. On the snap, defenders drop — and the Chargers’ rush comes from different angles.
Sebastian Joseph-Day walks Schlottman and Cleveland into the backfield and Tuli Tuipuloto drives O’Neill into the pocket — while Morgan Fox turns the corner on Ingram and finishes the play with a sack.
If Spagnuolo can implement creative fronts and pressure looks, Kansas City should be able to unleash Jones whenever it wants.
The bottom lineOn Sunday, the Vikings will be in desperation mode, trying to keep their season alive. They will give the Chiefs their best (and hardest) shot. Getting pressure on Cousins will be one of Kansas City’s primary keys to victory. While Minnesota’s offensive weapons will challenge the Chiefs’ blossoming secondary, an absolutely dominant effort from the defensive line could drastically simplify this game.
