This Chiefs team hasn’t been the gaudy-statistical offensive team
we have come to expect from Mahomes, but he has found a way
to work through major issues on offense this season, including poor
tackle play and receivers who couldn’t hold onto the football. Now
he has his team on the precipice of history.

The Chiefs would become the first back-to-back champion since the
New England Patriots and Brady did it way back in 2003 and 2004.

While Mahomes hasn’t racked up the big numbers in the playoffs,
he’s been steady, capable and made the big plays when needed
without making mistakes. Game manager? Hardly. But he hasn’t
thrown a pick in three postseason games and has been sacked just
three times behind a leaky offensive line. That’s playing big in the
moment.

That isn’t to say Mahomes can’t get hot and carry this team, even
with the issues. We know he can. But I think the Chiefs will start
out running the football in this game with Isiah Pacheco against a
49ers defense that has given up 5.6 per rush in the playoffs. The
49ers have been gashed trying to defend the run, getting pushed
around by both the Green Pay Packers and Detroit Lions. Andy Reid
is smart enough to know that’s where he has to attack.

On the other side of the ball, the Chiefs have their best defense
during the Mahomes era. Coordinator Steve Spagnuolo is one of the
best ever in the postseason, but he faces a stiff challenge against
the 49ers’ high-scoring offense. Spagnuolo loves to use a lot of nickel
and dime looks, but you can bet the 49ers will attack that with
Christian McCaffrey if he does. The Chiefs, like the 49ers, are
vulnerable to the run and would be even more so if they don’t play
more base defense.

Then there’s 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy, playing in his first Super
Bowl. This is a game that could be his true proving moment for any
doubters still left. He has been really good this season, putting his
name in the MVP talk for a bit. In the 49ers two postseason victories,
he has come up big with late-game drives. That’s how quarterbacks
are defined, even if he did have some struggles at times in those
games.

Purdy has been outstanding against the blitz this year — No. 1 in the
league — so Spagnuolo will have to be creative with how he uses it.
The Chiefs secondary is the strength of the defense, and its disguises
and late rotations could be big in getting Purdy to hesitate a tick.

Early on, I see two teams running the football against weak rush
defenses. The game will be close late. But in the end, it will be
Mahomes time.

I can see it now: 49ers lead by three at 20-17, Mahomes with the
ball at his own 25 with 2:20 left in the game and two timeouts.
From there, it’s Mahomes pulling out another magical moment, a
surgical carving of the 49ers defense to get the Chiefs a game-winning
touchdown, even though the field goal would tie it.

That would give Mahomes three Super Bowl victories in six years
as a starter, with one loss in the big game. He could easily have
played in two others, blowing a 21-3 lead to the Bengals in a playoff
loss and seeing an offsides penalty negate an interception that would
have beaten the Patriots in an AFC championship game.

The man is on a mission. That mission is to take down Brady as the
greatest quarterback of all-time. But let’s make it bigger than that.
He could be on his way to being the next Michael Jordan, leaving
stars in his path without rings as he piles them up as the greatest
to do it.

High praise for sure, but who are we to doubt Patrick Mahomes?
I certainly won’t.

The Kansas City Chiefs will take the field against the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday with an opportunity to secure a second-straight world championship on the line.

Here are five things to keep in mind heading into game day.

1. Here’s a look at the final injury report for both teams.

The Chiefs will be without offensive guard Joe Thuney (pectoral) on Sunday for the second-straight game, meaning veteran Nick Allegretti will slide in at left guard. Additionally, tailback Jerick McKinnon, who hasn’t played since Week 15 due to a groin injury, is listed as “Questionable” for Sunday.

2. The Chiefs’ defense has been historic during this postseason run.

Kansas City allowed just 13.7 points-per-game on average through their three postseason contests to this point, marking the sixth-lowest figure for any team to play three or more playoff games since 1990. Only the 2000-01 Baltimore Ravens (5.8), the 1998-99 Denver Broncos (10.7), the 1990-91 New York Giants (11.7), the 2002-03 Tampa Bay Buccaneers (12.3) and the 2013-14 Seattle Seahawks (13.3) yielded fewer points-per-game in that time.

Additionally, the Chiefs’ second-half defense has been particularly impressive. Kansas City – which yielded the fewest second-half points of any team during the regular season – has allowed just 10 second-half points during the playoffs, and over its last eight games, no opponent has scored double-digit points in the second half against Kansas City.

It sets up a great matchup against the 49ers’ offense, which averaged the second-most points in the second half of any team this season. San Francisco has been tremendous in the second half during its playoff run, too, scoring 44 points in the second half across its two games after scoring just 14 combined points in the first half.

3. Kansas City will seek yet another fast start offensively.

The Chiefs have tallied points on their opening possession in each of their last four games in which the starters played, scoring touchdowns in three of those games. Looking at the playoffs specifically, the Chiefs scored on three of their first four possessions vs. Miami and on five-straight drives against Buffalo before recording back-to-back touchdown drives to begin the AFC Championship Game against Baltimore.

Kansas City ran 26 plays for 156 yards and 12 first downs while chewing up nearly 15 minutes of clock on its first two possessions vs. Baltimore, firmly claiming a lead that the Chiefs never relinquished.

The Chiefs have scored on their opening possession to begin eight-straight playoff games dating back to 2021, tallying six touchdowns and two field goals.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ebkoJzrWN10

4. The 49ers’ defense forced a turnover on nearly 16 percent of opponent drives this season.

San Francisco posted the No. 3 scoring defense in the NFL this season, trailing only Baltimore and Kansas City, and a primary reason behind its success was a high takeaway rate. The 49ers faced the second-fewest offensive drives of any team in the league, and on those possessions, San Francisco forced a turnover on a remarkable 15.5 percent of drives. That tally included a league-most 22 interceptions over the course of the year.

Oddly enough, despite facing the second-fewest number of offensive possessions in the league, San Francisco allowed the most drives of 10+ plays in the NFL this season. In fact, on drives in which the 49ers didn’t force a turnover this year, opponents scored points 40 percent of the time.

Kansas City has excelled at taking care of the football during its playoff run, and looking at quarterback Patrick Mahomes specifically, he hasn’t turned the ball over in each of his last four starts. In fact, according to Pro Football Focus’ advanced metrics, Mahomes hasn’t committed a single “turnover worthy play” during that time – a span of 147 dropbacks.

5. The Chiefs’ ability to run the football and remain balanced offensively will be key.

A major component of the Chiefs’ offensive resurgence during the postseason has been their balance between the run and the pass. Here’s a quick look at that balance over the last three weeks:

Miami: 34 runs and 41 passes

Buffalo: 24 runs, 23 passes

Baltimore: 32 runs, 39 passes

The Chiefs’ effectiveness running the football has made that balance possible, as tailback Isiah Pacheco has rushed for 254 yards and three touchdowns during Kansas City’s playoff run, including seven runs of 10+ yards. Additionally, according to Pro Football Focus, Pacheco has forced nine missed tackles during the playoffs, gaining 178 yards after first contact.

It’s also worth pointing out that San Francisco has struggled against the run during the postseason. The 49ers allowed 318 combined rushing yards against the Packers and Lions, yielding an average of 5.58 yards-per-carry.

An effective running game paired with an efficient passing attack has been the recipe for Kansas City during its run to the Super Bowl, and a similar formula on Sunday could go a long way toward securing a world championship.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — The Chiefs go as far as Patrick Mahomes takes them. The 49ers have Christian McCaffrey, Deebo Samuel, George Kittle and a star-studded group surrounding Brock Purdy.

This Super Bowl will come down to the other side of the ball.

Defense wins the Vince Lombardi Trophy on Sunday.

Kansas City is seeking to become the NFL’s first repeat champion in 19 years. San Francisco is aiming for a record-tying sixth Super Bowl title.

Mahomes, Travis Kelce and coach Andy Reid get most of the attention on the Chiefs (14-6), but defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo’s unit deserves plenty of credit for carrying the team during various points of the season when the offense was inconsistent and out of sync.

All-Pros Chris Jones and Trent McDuffie along with George Karlaftis, L’Jarius Sneed and others stepped up, giving the Chiefs their best defense of Mahomes’ era.

They’ll need to do it for one more game against a versatile, dynamic offense.

The 49ers (14-5) also have a formidable defense led by Nick Bosa, All-Pro Fred Warner, Javon Hargrave and Charvarius Ward. They’ve struggled in the postseason, especially making third-down stops.

They have to be better against Mahomes and the Chiefs to have a shot to win.

WHEN THE 49ERS HAVE THE BALL

The 49ers had the league’s third-ranked rushing attack behind McCaffrey and fourth-ranked passing offense behind Purdy. The Chiefs gave up the second-fewest points (17.3), were fourth against the pass and 18th against the run.

McCaffrey, tight end Kittle, left tackle Trent Williams and fullback Kyle Juszczyk were All-Pros. Brandon Aiyuk was a second-team All-Pro. Samuel is a versatile, do-everything player.

The 49ers have plenty of weapons, and coach Kyle Shanahan is known for finding innovative ways to use them and keep defenses off balance. He’s facing a master tactician in Spagnuolo.

It’ll be a chess match.

Spagnuolo has a penchant for blitzing. Purdy excelled against it.

FILE -Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes (15) runs against Miami Dolphins defensive end Emmanuel Ogbah (91) during an NFL wild-card playoff football game Saturday, Jan. 13, 2024 in Kansas City, Mo. There are a variety of ways a game can change, and that’s been evident in the games that led to this week’s Super Bowl matchup between Kansas City and San Francisco.(AP Photo/Ed Zurga, File)
ASSOCIATED PRESS

The 49ers have to block Jones, who can be a game-wrecker. McDuffie is a shutdown slot cornerback and Sneed allowed only one receiver all season to have more than 50 yards receiving in a game so Purdy has a tough task.

He led the NFL with a 113.0 passer rating on 4,280 yards, 31 TDs, 11 picks and a 69.4% completion rate. McCaffrey led the NFL with 1,459 yards rushing and had 14 rushing TDs for San Francisco. He also had 564 yards receiving for seven scores.

Kittle had 65 catches for 1,020 yards and six TDs. Aiyuk led the way with 75 receptions for 1,342 yards and seven scores. Samuel had 1,117 yards from scrimmage.

A wild card for San Francisco’s offense is Purdy’s surprising mobility. His scrambling was a major factor as he led comeback wins against the Lions and Packers in the playoffs.

The Chiefs shut down two-time MVP Lamar Jackson, the best running QB in the NFL, so they’ll be ready for Purdy.

WHEN THE CHIEFS HAVE THE BALL

The Chiefs had the league’s sixth-ranked passing offense behind Mahomes and 19th-ranked rushing attack. The 49ers were 14th against the pass and third against the run, but they have allowed 13 of 25 third-down conversions in the playoffs.

Mahomes is a brilliant playmaker who finds unique ways to make big plays when it seems nothing is available. The two-time NFL and Super Bowl MVP threw for 4,183 yards with 27 touchdowns, a career-high 14 interceptions and career-low 92.6 passer rating. His receivers dropped 44 passes, the most in the league.

The Chiefs’ offense runs through Mahomes and Kelce. Without a deep threat — Tyreek Hill was traded to Miami two years ago — Reid has turned the passing offense into a shorter, carve-up attack.

Rashee Rice has the ability to turn screens into big plays and veteran Marquez Valdes-Scantling has averaged 21.6 yards per catch in the playoffs.

Kelce had 93 catches for 984 yards and five TDs in the regular season and he has taken his game to another level in the playoffs, with 23 catches for 262 yards and three scores in three games. Rice had 79 receptions for 938 yards and seven TDs in the regular season.

The Chiefs have to use running back Isiah Pacheco to balance the offense. He ran for 935 yards and seven TDs in the regular season, and he has 254 yards and three scores in the playoffs.

Reid is one of the NFL’s most creative coaches, and he’s willing to add new wrinkles in the biggest games. Kansas City again won’t have All-Pro left guard Joe Thuney and the offensive line has a big challenge protecting Mahomes from Bosa, Hargrave and the rest of San Francisco’s pass rush.

Warner and Dre Greenlaw can control of the middle of the field and limit some of Kelce’s opportunities, forcing the Chiefs to attack outside.

Mahomes can always make plays with his legs. He scrambled for 26 first downs in the regular season. Playing on an injured ankle in last year’s Super Bowl, he had a big scramble on Kansas City’s go-ahead drive in a comeback win over Philadelphia.

If the 49ers bring the heat and turn up the pressure like Tampa Bay did against Mahomes in the Super Bowl three years ago, that could be trouble for the Chiefs.

SPECIAL TEAMS

Niners rookie kicker Jake Moody was 21 of 25 on field goals in the regular season, but he’s looked shaky in the playoffs, with two misses in five tries. His longest field goal was 57 yards.

Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker made 33 of 35 field goals in the regular season, including all five from beyond 50 yards. He hasn’t missed in the playoffs, making seven field goals and seven extra points. Butker’s 27-yard field goal with 8 seconds left gave the Chiefs a 38-35 win over Philadelphia in last season’s Super Bowl.

San Francisco punter Mitch Wishnowsky had a 42.7-yard net average. Kansas City’s Tommy Townsend had a 41.9-yard net average.

The Chiefs use Mecole Hardman and Richie James for returns. Hardman had the longest punt return at 50 yards and James had the longest kick return at 31.

The 49ers will sometimes use Samuel on kick returns, with Ray-Ray McCloud getting most of the returns on punts and kicks.

COACHING

Shanahan is 8-3 in the playoffs and 0-2 in Super Bowls, including one as an assistant. His 49ers blew a lead against the Chiefs in this game four years ago and he was offensive coordinator for Atlanta when the Falcons blew a 28-3 lead against Tom Brady and the Patriots in Super Bowl 51.

Reid is a likely future Hall of Famer. He already has two Super Bowl rings and is the winningest coach in the history of the Chiefs and Eagles.

INTANGIBLES

The 49ers initially were 2 1/2 favorites, but the line dropped to 1 1/2 on Saturday, according to FanDuel Sportsbook. They’ve been favored in every game this season. The Chiefs have embraced the underdog role in the playoffs, going on the road to beat Buffalo and Baltimore.

Reid and Mahomes are chasing Bill Belichick and Brady. They’ve got to win four more Super Bowls to match them.

Kansas City is looking to become the NFL’s first repeat champion in nearly two decades.

The 2023 NFL season will end in historic fashion at Super Bowl LVIII, a matchup between the (14-6) Kansas City Chiefs and the (14-5) San Francisco 49ers. The championship game will happen in Las Vegas, Nevada, for the first time ever, at Allegiant Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Arrowhead Time.

For the third consecutive game this postseason, the Chiefs enter the weekend as betting underdogs: the 49ers are two-point favorites, per DraftKings Sportsbook. San Francisco’s talent has made them the class of the NFL this season, and the oddsmakers believe that outweighs the experience the Chiefs have.

That experience is exactly what should motivate Kansas City the most: a win would set the franchise apart as one of four in NFL history to create a dynasty: three championships within five or six seasons. The Chiefs would also be the first repeat champion in 19 years.

I have five things to watch in an epic title fight:

1. Disrupting the 49ers’ rhythm on offense

1436605589.jpg
Photo by Michael Zagaris/San Francisco 49ers/Getty Images

No offense was more efficient this season than the 49ers’ squad, posting league-high marks in yards per play (6.6), yards per pass attempt (9.3), and rushing success rate (47%).

The last statistic is key: San Francisco’s run game is constantly keeping the offense ahead of the sticks, leaning on running back and Offensive Player of the Year Christian McCaffrey to maximize zone-blocking schemes consistently. The 49ers will use heavy personnel to create movement on these handoffs, forcing the Chiefs’ defense to match with three linebackers in formation.

The Chiefs’ hampered defensive line puts even more emphasis on the Chiefs’ linebackers. Along with safeties, these positions need to play with urgency and gap discipline, plugging all possible paths to open space. The side effect from that level of commitment is effective play action, widening throwing windows downfield.

That puts a lot of responsibility on cornerbacks L’Jarius Sneed, Trent McDuffie, and the entire Chiefs’ secondary to single-cover the 49ers’ playmakers. The group will push the line with physical coverage, trying to limit explosive catch-and-runs.

2. The Chiefs’ offense in attack mode

1968212703.jpg

A big factor in the Chiefs’ playoff run has been the offensive line setting a tone up front. The playcalling has asked for more physicality from the linemen and other blockers, which sets up running back Isiah Pacheco to be the relentless battering ram he is.

That is exactly how the Green Bay Packers and Detroit Lions attacked the 49ers in the previous two playoff games. The San Francisco defense is more finesse than physical, especially up the middle: the defensive tackles penetrate a pocket better than they hold the line, while linebacker Fred Warner is more dangerous in space than he is in tight quarters.

Even with left guard Joe Thuney ruled out, the Chiefs’ interior offensive line thrives off a downhill run play. Then the switch-up would be to attack the perimeter of the defense with tight ends and pulling linemen. The 49ers have been run over both between the tackles and on toss sweeps this postseason.

3. Swarming Brock Purdy

The Chiefs can’t bank on forcing the 49ers into obvious passing situations often. When it does get to plays like third-and-long, it’s essential that defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo and the Chiefs’ defense don’t waste a chance to heat up quarterback Brock Purdy.

For one, defensive tackle Chris Jones should rarely, if at all, rush from the edge in these situations: I believe caving the pocket from the front is vital to affecting Purdy’s vision downfield. I don’t see a reason to match up Jones with All-Pro left tackle Trent Williams consistently.

Instead, the Chiefs need to make Williams continually work by throwing speed rushes and end-tackle stunts at him, with athletic rushers like Mike Danna and rookie Felix Anudike-Uzomah.

It may not lead to penetration, but it frees up the Chiefs’ best rushers to attack the lesser blockers in the 49ers’ pass protection. It’s also vital for that wasted edge rusher to track Purdy if he tries to escape the pressure from the right side.

4. A decisive, clean Patrick Mahomes

I find it remarkable that Chiefs’ quarterback Patrick Mahomes has gone six straight postseason games without throwing an interception; that stands alone as the longest streak in NFL history. The 49ers will provide quite the challenge to get to seven.

San Francisco will present a heavy dose of zone coverage, something the Chiefs’ pass game struggled to make plays against for much of this season. Down the stretch, the ascension of rookie wide receiver Rashee Rice has been a huge part of Mahomes finding a newfound rhythm against zone coverage and taking attention away from tight end Travis Kelce.

To pry throwing windows open against the 49ers’ aggressive zone coverage, the Chiefs will need to constantly use pre-snap motions, misdirections, and play fakes to make defenders slow to their responsibilities.

Even then, Mahomes will need to be careful testing the closing speed of Warner and his running mate linebacker Dre Greenlaw. When they do discourage him, look for quick checkdowns. Scramble mode is less likely to work against zone and this athletic 49ers’ front seven.

5. Sure tackling

1436605537.jpg
Photo by Michael Zagaris/San Francisco 49ers/Getty Images

The Chiefs’ defense has built a reputation for flying to the ball and taking the runner down with some emphasis. Safety Justin Reid leads by example, headlining a unit of physical coverage players that do not shy away from contact.

That attitude is required to defend the 49ers’ playmakers: McCaffrey, wide receiver Deebo Samuel, tight end George Kittle, wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, and even fullback Kyle Juszczyk are all handfuls to get to the ground. That’s especially true once these players have a head of steam from a schemed-open touch.

All of Kansas City’s off-ball defenders have to harness a relentless mindset for the entire game. Missed tackles will happen, but the high effort from pursuing teammates can limit the damage.
