Chiefs:“The defense was incredible. That’s a really good offense, and for [our defense] to shut them down and get some pretty critical stops…The defense won that game. We have to continue to get better as an offense – which I think we will – but if the defense plays like that, we’re going to be a hard team to beat. That’s special.”
–Chiefs Quarterback Patrick Mahomes
Bears:
“We believe in the process that we’re going through. Justin believes in the process we’re going through. We’re going to keep working and sticking together. It’s going to keep getting better, as it has. I know the result isn’t what we all want. I get that. … We believe in it and we’re going to stick to it.”

[/TABLE]The Kansas City Chiefs will look to remain in the win column on Sunday afternoon as they prepare for a bout against the Chicago Bears.
Here are five things to keep in mind heading into game day.
1. Here’s a look at the final injury report for both teams.
The Chiefs will be without linebacker Nick Bolton (ankle) on Sunday, which will likely thrust veteran linebacker Drue Tranquill into a larger role. Kansas City will also be without wide receiver Richie James (knee), meaning that the Chiefs will need to rely on other players to handle kick and punt return duties this weekend.
“We’ve got a lot of options,” said Assistant Head Coach / Special Teams Coordinator Dave Toub. “[Wide receiver Kadarius] Toney, [wide receiver] Skyy [Moore], [and wide receiver Justin] Watson [are all options]. [Wide receiver Rashee] Rice has done it. All those guys can do it, and we’ll see how it works out.”
In terms of game-time decisions, Toney (toe), linebacker Willie Gay (quad) and tailback Isiah Pacheco (hamstring) are all officially listed as “Questionable” entering Sunday’s game.
As for Chicago, defensive back Eddie Jackson (foot) is listed as “Doubtful” entering Sunday’s matchup. Jackson recorded 698 defensive snaps last season and is one of Chicago’s starters in the secondary, so his potential absence would be significant.
Another major development that isn’t indicated by the injury report is that the Bears placed starting left tackle Braxton Jones on Injured Reserve this week.
2. The Chiefs’ defense has been nothing short of dominant through two games.
Kansas City has been among the best defenses in the NFL so far this season, yielding just two offensive touchdowns through eight quarters. In fact, only the Dallas Cowboys, New Orleans Saints and Cleveland Browns have allowed fewer offensive scores than the Chiefs.
The defense was particularly effective last week, holding the Jaguars to just 3-of-12 on third down, 0-of-2 on fourth down and 0-for-3 in red zone touchdown efficiency. Keep in mind, Jacksonville was the No. 10 scoring offense in the NFL last season and scored 31 points in Week 1.
Additionally, opponents are just 2-for-6 in terms of red zone touchdown efficiency vs. Kansas City this season. Only Dallas and New Orleans have been better in that category, and it’s worth mentioning that one of the Chiefs’ red zone stops took place after Jacksonville had a 1st-and-Goal at the 1-yard line last week.
Cornerback Trent McDuffie spoke about the Chiefs’ mentality as a defense following Sunday’s game.
“We’re hungry. [Looking at last year], yeah, we won the Super Bowl, but I know this defense definitely felt like we could’ve done more and produced more,” McDuffie said. “Coming into this year, that is something that we definitely [were thinking about]…Just because last week and the week before we held them to nine and 14 points, this is a defense that’s going to continue to do that and be consistent with it.”
In terms of the pass-rush, the Chiefs pressured Jaguars’ quarterback Trevor Lawrence on 15 of his dropbacks last week (in which Lawrence posted a passer rating of 42.4 when pressured). Defensive lineman Chris Jones led the way in that category, recording six pressures on just 33 snaps. Defensive end George Karlaftis (5), linebacker Leo Chenal (4), defensive end Felix Anudike-Uzomah (2) and defensive end Mike Danna (2) also produced double-digit pressures in Week 2.
Kansas City will look to keep that defensive success going against a Bears’ offense that currently ranks 22nd in the NFL in scoring.

3. The Bears have some playmakers on offense. There are some dynamic players on Chicago’s offense, notably quarterback Justin Fields, who led all signal callers in rushing last season with 1,143 yards on ground. His 33 rushes of double-digit yardage ranked fifth among all players last season, and while many of those rushes occurred on scrambles, a significant portion of them were on designed quarterback runs.
“If you go watch film from last year, when he [gets outside the pocket], it’s scary,” said Defensive Coordinator Steve Spagnuolo. “It’s a concern, because if you let him do that, he can wreck the game.”
In the passing game, Fields’ top weapon is veteran wide receiver D.J. Moore, who has eight grabs for 129 yards through two games this season. Veteran tight end Cole Kmet – who has nine catches for 82 yards – leads Chicago in targets with 13.
4. The Bears have an impressive tandem at running back.
Chicago led the NFL in rushing last season with 3,014 yards, and while former tailback David Montgomery is no longer in town, the tandem of third-year running back Khalil Herbert and rookie Roschon Johnson is formidable. Herbert rushed for 731 yards last year (while averaging 5.67 yards-per-attempt) and Johnson, who joined the Bears as a fourth-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, has averaged nearly six yards-per-attempt on limited carries this season. Both players have also been active in the passing game, combining for 12 receptions for 105 yards.
The Bears have just 45 rushing attempts this season – the seventh-fewest in the NFL – but if they choose to rely more on the running game this week, they certainly have the players to find success.
5. Can the Chiefs’ offense build off their strong finish to last week’s victory?
The Chiefs fell victim to numerous self-inflicted errors last week, from 12 penalties to three giveaways. Specifically, Kansas City was either penalized or turned the ball over on six of its 10 drives against Jacksonville. Fortunately, the Chiefs managed to overcome those miscues to make clutch plays in crucial moments, including quarterback Patrick Mahomes’ 54-yard completion to wide receiver Skyy Moore late in the fourth quarter that essentially sealed the victory.
Kansas City will look to carry that momentum into Sunday’s game against a Chicago defense that has struggled to generate pressure (with one total sack as a team) and defend the big passing play (as evidenced by their seven passing plays allowed of at least 25 yards – the second-most in the NFL).
Additionally, for what it’s worth, the Chiefs have successfully moved the football when they’ve avoided the self-inflicted errors. Kansas City is averaging 5.7 yards-per-play this season – the fifth-highest mark in the NFL – so, it’s reasonable to assume that the Chiefs will find more consistency offensively if they can simply avoid slowing themselves down.
“There are small margins between winning and losing in this league,” said Coach Reid. “We know that, so we have to have a great week of preparation. That’s the one thing we can control – going out there and working our tail off. You put on the tape, and you see how hard [the Bears] play, so you better be ready.”

Credit: AP/Scott AudetteKANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas City Chiefs appeared to fix many of their Week 1 problems last week in Jacksonville, when All-Pro defensive tackle Chris Jones returned from his holdout, star tight end Travis Kelce was back on the field following a knee injury, and an offense that struggled against Detroit looked just a little bit better against the Jaguars.
Sure, they still had a bunch of penalties. Turnovers remained a problem. The offense was still trying to hit its stride.
Yet those issues seem like mere nuisances compared to what’s going on in Chicago these days.
As the Bears prepare to visit the Chiefs on Sunday, they are without a defensive coordinator following Alan Williams’ surprising and abrupt resignation and their offense is embroiled in controversy after quarterback Josh Fields blamed coaching for “robotic” play and then tried rather unsuccessfully to walk back his comments.
So how does Bears coach Matt Eberflus steer a rudderless team going forward?
“You focus on here and now,” he said. “What could we do right now during this time, with the meetings we had this morning, with the improvements we’re going to make? That’s all you can do. Be where your feet are, focusing on right now.”
Problem is their feet will be in Arrowhead Stadium on Sunday, facing the defending Super Bowl champions. The Bears (0-2) are nearly two-TD underdogs, according to FanDuel Sportsbook, as they try to snap a 12-game losing streak dating to last season.

Credit: AP/Phelan M. Ebenhack“We’re going through a storm right now,” Field said after last week’s loss to Tampa Bay. “It’s frustrating not winning. But I think at the same time, like I said, just take it day by day and not really worry about the past. The past is the past.”
It’s not as if the Chiefs (1-1) are humming along perfectly, especially on offense. They turned the ball over three times, committed 12 turnovers for 94 yards and a group of wide receivers that had eight drops in their opener against Detroit continued to put the ball on the ground during their 17-9 victory over the Jaguars last week.
“The frustration is probably more of me and about myself and how the offense has been doing,” Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes said. “Everybody has been having that mentality that we just have to keep working and getting better. The defense has been playing so well. We want to take the pressure off them.”

COORDINATOR CONCERNS

Credit: AP/Chris O’MearaWilliam said Wednesday he was resigning to take care of his health and his family. Eberflus plans to call defensive plays for the Bears for the second week in a row, but that could take some of his time away from helping their struggling offense.
“I spend time with the offense on the game plan days,” said Eberflus, who was previously the Colts’ defensive coordinator. “I spend breakfast club with the quarterbacks. I meet with the coaches in the evening on the offensive side. And then I’m in the interim game plan also on Monday. … Like I said, it’s 50-50. You’re splitting it 50-50 there, that’s what you do.”
PLAYING THE FIELDS
Fields, whose 70.7 passer rating is worst in the NFL, turned heads this week when he indicated coaches are feeding him too much information. Fields later said his statement was taken out of context and that he only points a finger at himself.
“I think there’s been times where I just try to be a perfectionist and nothing in this world is perfect,” said Fields, who was sacked six times last week and 10 times through two games. “So like I said, stop thinking more and just go out there and play.”
TAYLOR’S TROUBLE
The Chiefs gave Jawaan Taylor a four-year, $80 million contract in the offseason to play right tackle, so it was jarring to see him benched briefly against Jacksonville. Taylor was penalized five times — two false starts, two holds and an illegal formation — one week after his questionable alignment and quick get-off against Detroit were called into question.
“Been working on it this week to clean it up. Needs to be fixed,” said Taylor, whose pass-block rates nevertheless graded out among the best in the league last week. “End of the day, I’m not here to hurt my team. I have to be better.”
INJURY WOES
The Bears put left tackle Braxton Jones on injured reserve with a neck injury, while safety Eddie Jackson has been dealing with a foot injury, wide receiver Darnell Mooney with a knee problem and defensive back Josh Blackwell with a sore hamstring.
The Chiefs are just as banged up: Nick Bolton has an ankle injury and fellow linebacker Willie Gay Jr. a sore quad, running back Isiah Pacheco is dealing with a sore hamstring, and wide receivers Kadarius Toney and Richie James missed time this week with a sore toe and balky knee. Chiefs coach Andy Reid said James’ knee issue could keep him out a while.
GETTING DEFENSIVE
The Chiefs offense is accustomed to bailing out their middle-of-the-road defense, but their roles have been reversed through the first two weeks of the season. Kansas City is 13th in total defense, despite playing two potent offenses in the Lions and Jaguars, and tied for third in the league in scoring defense.
“We’re hungry,” Chiefs cornerback Trent McDuffie said, “and I know off of last year, and just off stats and everything that went on — yeah, we won the Super Bowl, but I know the defense felt like we could have done more.”

from ArrowheadPride.comFor Kansas City, this should be a get-right game — but Chicago will bring a motivated group.

Photo by Stacy Revere/Getty ImagesOn Sunday of the NFL’s Week 3, the Kansas City Chiefs (1-1) could be walking into a trap against the Chicago Bears (0-2) on GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium. Headed into the weekend, DraftKings Sportsbook has the Chiefs as 12.5-point favorites over the Bears. That’s tied for the highest spread of the weekend; the Dallas Cowboys hold the same line over the Arizona Cardinals.
Aside from the Bears’ woes on the field, Chicago also dealt with off-field headlines this week — including their defensive coordinator Alan Willliams unexpectedly stepping away from the team.
It all sets up perfectly for one of two things: a Kansas City blowout, or a contest too close for comfort.
Here are five things to watch on Sunday.
1. Getting the passing game going
Photo by David Eulitt/Getty ImagesHeading into Week 3, Chiefs’ quarterback Patrick Mahomes ranks 17th in yards per pass attempt, 23rd in completion percentage and 20th in passer rating among NFL quarterbacks.
Those are unheard-of low marks for the Chiefs’ passing game — and it’s time to turn that around. Mahomes admitted this week that the team has struggled to beat zone coverage, which speaks to a lack of timing (and instinctual trust) with his pass-catchers.
Enter the Bears’ defense — which has allowed 8.9 net yards per pass attempt this season, the league’s second-highest mark. Through two weeks, it has yet to force a turnover — and has tallied just one sack.
This is a get-right spot for the home team’s passing attack — and it is needed.
2. A big advantage for the Chiefs’ defensive front
Jay Biggerstaff-USA TODAY SportsLast Sunday, Kansas City’s defensive line harassed Jacksonville Jaguars’ quarterback Trevor Lawrence. This Sunday, it have a chance to terrorize Chicago’s Justin Fields even more.
The Bears’ pass protection has been one of the league’s worst: 13% of the unit’s passing attempts end up as sacks — the NFL’s highest rate. The league has only two starting quarterbacks who see less pressure per dropback than Fields, who faces it on 47% of his pass attempts.
The mismatch up front may be enough for defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo to temper his blitzing tendencies. For instance: if the Chiefs align defensive tackle Chris Jones over the right tackle on every third down (like they did against Jacksonville), Jones would once again be facing a rookie. In this case, it would be Darnell Wright, who has allowed a sack and seven pressures this season.

3. Disciplined blitzers
Photo by Michael Reaves/Getty ImagesStill, Spagnuolo is obviously going to test the young Chicago quarterback with some blitzes, and it will likely cause confusion. So when he panics, it will be up to the Chiefs’ defense to finish the job — but that’s likely to be easier said than done.
On Thursday, Spagnuolo was clear that the team is focused on containing Fields — whose athleticism allowed him to accumulate 1,143 rushing yards last season.
“If you go watch film from last year, when he does [run], it’s scary,” he pointed out. “We saw something on one of the PFF slides: he has had as many of those takeoffs to 20 miles per hour as Tyreek Hill — and we all know what Tyreek can do.”

This week, we learned that wide receiver Richie James is dealing with an injury that will linger past Sunday’s game. Special teams coordinator Dave Toub did not appoint a specific player to replace him as a returner, so what we see on Sunday will be interesting.A toe injury kept wide receiver Kadarius Toney from practicing on Wednesday and Thursday — but he was back at work on Friday. He would be one of a few available options. Another would be wideout Skyy Moore. But that might not only put his value to the offense into question, but also impact his confidence; he clearly struggled with returning punts last season.
Linebacker Nick Bolton did not practice at all this week — and his absence will obviously be impactful. However, the team may feel comfortable letting him heal up with patience; linebackers Drue Tranquill and Leo Chenal will just play more snaps, giving them a larger sample size to show off their talents. Each have made significant impacts in limited snaps.
5. Creating more turnovers
Photo by Cooper Neill/Getty ImagesDuring Thursday’s press appearance, Spagnuolo also mentioned three aspects of the game that he believes the defense could improve upon. One was creating turnovers.
The Chiefs have forced two turnovers this season. Only five teams have forced fewer. In Week 1, cornerback Trent McDuffie forced a turnover when he came up hard on a tackle, helping the ball pop free. In Week 2, a pass (that turned out to be a lateral) was recovered by cornerback L’Jarius Sneed after it fell to the ground.
We must give credit to McDuffie for an effective tackle — and Sneed for a heads-up play. But it would also be nice to see Kansas City’s back end force a turnover through the air — or for see the pass rushers focus on prying a ball loose from Fields. While the Chiefs’ defense has been impressive so far, it won’t reach its peak until it starts actively forcing turnovers when opportunities present themselves.
