          Notable Quotables:
          Chiefs:

“Our defense was incredible tonight, as they have been. I think, at halftime, they had allowed [something like] 39 passing yards. That’s quite a feat.”

          –Chiefs Head Coach Andy Reid

          Chargers:

“It starts with Patrick, it starts with [Chiefs TE] Travis [Kelce], it also starts with [Chiefs RB Isiah] Pacheco, the running back — they have a three-headed monster that’s as good as any three in the league.”

          –Chargers Defensive Coordinator Derrick Ansley

The Kansas City Chiefs will look to make it four victories in a row on Sunday afternoon with a tilt against the Minnesota Vikings.

Here are five things to keep in mind heading into game day.

The Kansas City Chiefs are set for a second-straight divisional matchup on Sunday as they prepare to take on the Los Angeles Chargers at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium.

Here are five things to keep in mind heading into game day.

                    1. Here’s a look at the final injury report for both teams.

The Chiefs will be without wide receiver Justin Watson (elbow) on Sunday after the veteran pass-catcher left last Thursday’s game with the injury. Additionally, cornerback Jaylen Watson (thigh) is listed as “Questionable” for Sunday after leaving Friday’s practice early. Coach Reid added that they’ll “just see where he is at” heading into game day.

As for wide receiver Mecole Hardman, who the Chiefs acquired from New York on Wednesday, and defensive lineman Charles Omenihu, who was reinstated from a suspension this week, all signs point to both individuals playing on Sunday.

“We’ll see, but it’s going in that direction,” Reid said. “They did a nice job [in practice].”

The Chargers, meanwhile, will be without four players on Sunday, including safety Alohi Gilman (heel). Gilman – who played 100 percent of the Bolts’ snaps through the first three weeks of the season – has been sidelined since Week 4. Additionally, Los Angeles listed All-Pro safety Derwin James as “Questionable” for Sunday due to an ankle injury. James first appeared on the Chargers’ injury report on Thursday before missing Friday’s practice.

                    2. The Chargers have racked up the third-most sacks in the NFL.

The Chargers have tallied 21 sacks this season – tied for the third-most in the NFL – and after failing to record a single sack in Week 1, Los Angeles has amassed at least four sacks in each of its last four games. That includes a five-sack outing vs. Dallas last week, and a seven-sack performance against Las Vegas the week prior.

Los Angeles features an impressive stable of edge rushers led by All-Pros Khalil Mack (7 sacks) and Joey Bosa (3 sacks), but two additional names to know on Sunday are rookie outside linebacker Tuli Tuipulotu and defensive lineman Morgan Fox.

Tuipulotu – who joined the Chargers as a second-round pick – ranks second on the team in pressures with 19, trailing only Mack’s 23. In fact, Tuipulotu has the fourth-most pressures among all rookies so far this season.

Fox isn’t far behind Tuipulotu in pressures, either, as he owns the third-most on Los Angeles with 13. A seven-year veteran, Fox is a versatile player who will likely line up from a variety of different spots along the defensive line on Sunday.

With all of that in mind, the good news for Kansas City is that the Chiefs have yielded the fewest sacks of any team to play six games this season with six. In that same vein, according to Pro Football Focus’ grading system, Chiefs’ quarterback Patrick Mahomes has been the league’s best passer when pressured this season.

Additionally, for what it’s worth, the Chargers’ defense is currently allowing the second-most yards-per-game (391.6) of any team in the NFL despite those lofty sack totals.

                    3. Kansas City has only surrendered 79 offensive points this season.

The Chiefs’ defense has stacked one strong performance after another this season, yielding just 79 offensive points – the fewest of any team to play six games – heading into Week 7. Kansas City is the only team in the NFL to hold the opposition under 22 total points in every game this season, and in terms of scoring defense – which includes total points allowed – the Chiefs currently rank second in the league (at 14.7 points-per-game) behind only San Francisco (14.5).

The exciting thing about the Chiefs’ defensive performance thus far is that it appears to be sustainable. It’s not buoyed by gaudy takeaway totals (where Kansas City ranks 10th with nine) or an unusually high red-zone touchdown percentage (where the Chiefs rank 12th at 50%).

Kansas City has simply been solid across the board, ranking second in average yards allowed after-the-catch (4.0), sixth in net yards allowed-per-game (284), seventh in passing plays of 25+ yards (8), ninth in third down conversion rate (36%) and – most importantly – fifth in total touchdowns allowed (9).

Now, in order to find more of that success on Sunday, one key area for the Chiefs defensively will be limiting the Chargers’ short third-down opportunities. In the two matchups between the Chiefs and Chargers last season, an astounding 19 of Los Angeles’ 33 total third-down chances required fewer than three yards for a conversion. That reality – coupled with the Chargers’ tendency to go for it on fourth down – makes the Chiefs’ performance on early downs all the more critical.

“I mentioned this to the guys this morning – we’re going to try extremely hard to make sure that the third downs are longer,” said Defensive Coordinator Steve Spagnuolo. “It would behoove us to play really well on first and second down, and then maybe if there is a third-down play and they gain three yards, maybe it’s a 4th-and-5, and we can talk them out of going for it because it’s not 4th-and-2 or 4th-and-1.”

                    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ojl65I8QJoQ

                    4. Chargers’ quarterback Justin Herbert is throwing the football further downfield this year.

Herbert is off to another solid start this season, completing 125-of-182 passes (68.7%) for 1,333 yards, nine touchdowns and two interceptions, but one area of note is his average depth of target.

The fourth-year quarterback had an average depth of target of just 6.7 yards last season, which was the third-lowest mark among passers with 400+ dropbacks in 2022. Only the New York Giants’ Daniel Jones (6.5 yards) and the Indianapolis Colts’ Matt Ryan (6.5 yards) had a lower figure.

This season, under new Offensive Coordinator Kellen Moore, that number has jumped to 8.7 yards – the fifth-highest mark in the NFL among quarterbacks with 200+ dropbacks. In other words, Herbert is throwing the ball further downfield on average than he ever has before. It will be up to the Chiefs’ defense – which is allowing the sixth-fewest net passing yards-per-game in the NFL (183.8) – to slow him down.

                    5. If the Chiefs can get back on track in the red zone, this offense will be tough to stop.

Kansas City only scored 19 points last week, but there is still plenty of reason to believe that the Chiefs’ young offense will soon find its groove. In fact, the Chiefs racked up 389 yards vs. Denver – the fourth-most of any team in Week 6 – and for the season, Kansas City owns the fourth-most total yards-per-game in the NFL (382.3), the lowest three-and-out percentage (9.7%), the third-best third-down conversion rate (48.1%) and the second-most plays of 10+ yards (85) of any team.

Simply put, the Chiefs have moved the football up and down the field this season. The issue last week was the red zone, where the Chiefs scored just one touchdown on five possessions. Kansas City currently ranks 18th in red zone touchdown efficiency (54.2%), but only a few plays can swing that number in either which direction, and it’s worth remembering that the Chiefs ranked second in that category just last year (69.4%).

It’s all to say that if Kansas City can improve its red zone efficiency, this has the potential to be one of the top scoring offenses in the NFL.

Tale of 2 defenses: Chiefs have been brilliant, Chargers awful ahead of AFC West showdown

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chargers and the Chiefs have been predictably good on offense this season, at least statistically, which means in the complementary world of the NFL, the difference in their records probably resides on the opposite side of the ball.

The Chargers are 2-3 largely because they allow more yards than all but one team in the league.

The Chiefs are 5-1 thanks to a defense that allows fewer points than all but one.

“Yeah, that helps a ton, especially when you don’t play your best ball,” said Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who has been openly critical of his own play heading into Sunday’s game between the AFC West rivals at Arrowhead Stadium.

“Our defense is holding it down for us right now, but let’s take the pressure off them so they can play free and be even better.”

Imagine that: The Chiefs are tied for the best record in the NFL with an offense Mahomes thinks has yet to hit its stride.

Still, the Chiefs are second in yards passing, fourth in total offense and ninth in scoring the first six weeks of the season. And while those numbers were inflated by a blowout of the Bears, Kansas City’s offense has nevertheless been impressive enough on a week-to-week basis to win every game since a season-opening loss to Detroit.

Part of the reason Mahomes is lamenting the offense has been its failure to reach the end zone. The Chiefs have piled up the yards between the 20s, taking advantage of short passes while opposing defenses continually take away the deep stuff, but their offense has been bogged down by turnovers and penalties when it reaches the red zone.

“You have to continue to push, continue to get better and better. That’s all you can do regardless,” Mahomes said. “We understand that it’s going to take the offense at some point to have to have the big game to win it.”

Might happen this week. The Chargers, despite some desultory lulls of their own, are a top-10 offense when it comes to passing, total offense and scoring, so the Chiefs might well need their offense to finally pop to win a shootout.

It should help their cause that the Chargers have among the worst defenses in the league.

“This is going to be a different week because it’s a shorter week,” said Chargers coach Brandon Staley, whose team is coming off a Monday night game while the Chiefs played the previous Thursday, giving them four more days to prepare.

“But in terms of the approach of how we attack a plan and what’s needed to be our best for Sunday, that has to stay the same,” Staley said. “What you have to focus on are the keys to winning. What ultimately is going to impact winning on Sunday? That’s where our full focus has to be right now. From now until kickoff, just focusing on the things that are going to help us win.”

                          GETTING HELP

The Chiefs should get even better on defense with the return of Charles Omenihu, who was suspended the first six games for violating the NFL’s personal-conduct policy. The former 49ers pass rusher, who signed a two-year, $16 million deal with Kansas City, is expected to be active against the Chargers despite having only a week to get back up to speed.

                          SPEAKING OF HELP

Kansas City brought back wide receiver

this week in a swap of late-round draft picks with the Jets, who had signed him to a $4 million deal in the offseason. Hardman was part of both of the Chiefs’ recent Super Bowl-winning teams, but he barely got on the field in New York, which had made it clear in recent weeks that it was eager to move on.

                          SACK ATTACK

The Chargers are tied for third in the league with 21 sacks, and all of them have come in their last four games. Morgan Fox has four straight games where he has taken down the quarterback, the longest streak of his career, and Khalil Mack has seven in the past two games alone, including a franchise-record six in a win over the Raiders.

“He is really healthy, and a healthy Khalil Mack is a productive Khalil Mack,” said Staley, whose veteran pass rusher has sacked Mahomes twice over the years. “We’ve done an outstanding job against the run, which has earned him more opportunities to rush. I think he has capitalized on his matchups. When you can get into a rhythm, as a rusher, that’s as good as Khalil is, I think that you’re going to be consistent around the quarterback, which is what he has been.”

                          LOOKING TO REBOUND

Justin Herbert has completed fewer than 60% of his passes in consecutive games for only the third time in his four-year career, going 22 of 37 for 227 yards with two touchdowns and a pick last week against Dallas. Yet he also has three 300-yard games in six starts against the Chiefs.

“They are kind of young, but they don’t play like it. They play like they’re veterans all around the board,” Herbert said. “They’re really well-coached. When you have a group like that together, it’s going to make for a really good defense.”

                          DIVISION DOMINANCE

The Chiefs have won three straight against the Chargers, part of an era of AFC West dominance that has yielded seven straight division titles. One reason for that sustained success is that Chiefs coach Andy Reid spends time during training camp working specifically on division opponents, and that could give his team an advantage when game week arrives.

“I don’t know if most teams do that but I’m sure other teams do,” Reid said. “I think taking the time for the coaches and players when it’s not quite so chaotic as during the season, I think helps.”

On Sunday afternoon, the Kansas City Chiefs (5-1) are welcoming the Los Angeles Chargers (2-3) to Arrowhead Stadium for the first significant AFC West game of the season. Kickoff is set for 3:25 PM Arrowhead time; DraftKings Sportsbook had the Chiefs as 5.5-point favorites entering the weekend.

The last four games between these teams have been decided by six points or fewer, Kansas City with a 3-1 record. If you combine all four games, the Chiefs have outscored the Chargers by six points total. There’s no reason to believe this game will be any more lopsided than the others — especially with Los Angeles desperate to improve on their losing record.

I have five things to watch in what I believe will be the most intense game of the season yet:

                              1. The Chiefs’ pass protection

                              usa_today_16833412.jpg
                              Denny Medley-USA TODAY Sports

The Chiefs allow the fewest sacks per dropback in the NFL, but Sunday will be as tough a challenge as any the pass protection has faced this season.

Los Angeles’ headliners for the pass rush are veterans Joey Bosa and Khalil Mack; the duo has combined for 10 sacks this season, but Mack had the bulk of them in a monster game against the Las Vegas Raiders. Chiefs’ offensive coordinator Matt Nagy knows more than most how dominant Mack can be.

“I know a couple guys on that team,” Nagy reflected as former head coach of the Chicago Bears. “Number 52, who had six sacks in one game; I’ve seen some of those firsthand, I’ve been on the sideline. He’s a dominant player, their front line really creates havoc and helps out the back end.”

The big names are spelled by exciting rookie outside linebacker Tuli Tuipulotu, who has two sacks this year while generating pressure constantly. All three will be coming off the edge almost exclusively, so this will call on the offensive tackles to step up — and the coaching staff to aid them when they need help.

                              2. Getting Chargers to third and long

                              usa_today_21392404.jpg
                              Jayne Kamin-Oncea-USA TODAY Sports

The Chargers’ offense has found success against the Chiefs in recent games: Los Angeles scored 24 and 27 points in last year’s matchups, respectively, more than Kansas City has allowed in any game this season.

Chiefs’ defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo recognized that as he prepared for this week, and one area of the game stood out to him.

“We’re going to try extremely hard to make sure that the third downs are longer,” Spagnuolo emphasized to reporters on Thursday. “I looked at it, we played them twice and had 33 – if I did my math right – 33 third downs, 20 of them were third-and-one or two. That’s tough. I think there were eight that were third-and-seven plus.”

Third and short is not only easier to convert than third and long, but the Chargers are also aggressive in attempting fourth-down conversions. A more manageable third down gives their play calling more flexibility, knowing they have another down to work with.

“They are an aggressive team, we know that,” Spags asserted. “We’ll be working on fourth-down plays today. Our guys are on top of it, and hopefully if they do it, we can stop it.”

                                3. Travis Kelce versus Derwin James

During last year’s matchup in Arrowhead Stadium, Chiefs’ tight end Travis Kelce found space for a big catch and run into the red zone — eventually tackled by a bodyslam from Chargers’ safety Derwin James.

It might be the only memorable moment James has had in the long-time battle between him and the elusive Kelce.

                                [IMG]https://scontent.fmci1-3.fna.fbcdn.net/v/t39.30808-6/394626420_7379776582050006_5898613581198072256_n.jpg?_nc_cat=106&ccb=1-7&_nc_sid=5f2048&_nc_ohc=ghjPKKurZHEAX_BX2fR&_nc_ht=scontent.fmci1-3.fna&oh=00_AfDggJSYE24qgV8Xcdj2vvcEjc_gSyp6INO2ziuGwE4_7Q&oe=653A3144[/IMG]

The future Hall of Famer tends to have big moments against the AFC West rival, including a game-winning touchdown last year, beating James on a shallow crosser as he guarded him in man coverage.

This matchup will be a key one for both sides. If Los Angeles can improve their ability to blanket Kelce, it should allow opportunities for the Chiefs’ wide receivers to shine: the Chargers are allowing the second-most yards per pass attempt in the NFL currently.

                                4. Matchups for Chiefs’ coverage

                                usa_today_19477045.jpg
                                Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

The Chiefs will focus on pressuring Chargers’ quarterback Justin Herbert with their front, but he will get the ball out quickly to his playmakers. A lot of the defensive performance will rest on the shoulders of the back seven.

The key matchup will be wide receiver Keenan Allen against either cornerback Trent McDuffie or L’Jarius Sneed because the Chiefs shouldn’t feel the need to shadow him with Sneed. McDuffie may actually be the better individual matchup due to Allen’s quickness and shiftiness; Allen also spends two-thirds of his snaps in the slot.

The safeties and linebackers will also need to be locked in their matchups, especially in the red zone. Tight ends Gerald Everett and Donald Parham have combined for four touchdowns this season. At the same time, running back Austin Ekeler is back from injury — and has three plays of at least 28 yards in the two games he has played this year.

                                5. Winning in the margins

                                1244979362.jpg

No team has turned over the ball fewer times than the Chargers this season. The three total turnovers include two interceptions by Herbert — the third-fewest of full-time starting quarterbacks.

That counters a Chiefs’ defense that has excelled in nearly all aspects this season, aside from intercepting passes. The three total is tied for the sixth-fewest in the NFL. Takeaway opportunities will be rare in this game.

Special teams will also be very important; Special teams coordinator Dave Toub is preparing to contain an electric returner.

“(Derius Davis) is outstanding, the rookie they have,” Toub told reporters on Thursday. “We had him rated one of the highest grades we could give a punt returner. He’s got that ability – but he is a rookie, and he’s made a couple of mistakes but not many. When he gets the ball in his hands, he can bounce it on you really quick and change angles really fast… we respect him big time.”
