          Notable Quotables:
          Chiefs:

“We play a lot of big games — games on short rest, night games — and having that experience will help. A lot of guys on this team have done that, so the step up you see going into the playoffs, we make it a little smaller, because we’ve been in games like this. We can rely on our experience and be the best team we can be.”

          –Chiefs Quarterback Patrick Mahomes

          Dolphins:

“The team will be fired up to go and embrace the challenge, and there’s many layers to why it’s a challenge. For us in-house, we all believe in each other and want to get a losing taste out of our mouths. That’s the only objective.”

          –Dolphins Head Coach Mike McDaniel

[TD]The Dolphins will go into Arrowhead a banged-up team,
especially on defense. They will be down their top three
pass rushers. That’s a problem against Patrick Mahomes,
even if the Chiefs offense has struggled this season by
comparison to past Mahomes teams. They will do enough
here as their defense limits a Miami offense that has had
problems on the road. Chiefs take it.

The Kansas City Chiefs will look to advance to the Divisional Round of the playoffs for a sixth-straight season on Saturday as they take on the Miami Dolphins to kick off the postseason.

Here are five things to keep in mind heading into game day.

                    1. Here’s a look at the final injury report for both teams.

The Chiefs will be without offensive tackle Wanya Morris (concussion protocol) on Saturday, but they’re otherwise relatively healthy. Only wide receivers Justyn Ross (hamstring) and Kadarius Toney (hip/ankle) carry an injury designation into Saturday’s game, as both players are listed as “Questionable.”

With Morris out, veteran offensive tackle Donovan Smith, who hasn’t played since Week 14 due to a neck injury, will likely take over at left tackle – where he started each of the Chiefs’ first 12 games – in Morris’ stead.

As for the Dolphins, they’ll be without All-Pro cornerback Xavien Howard on Saturday due to a foot injury. Miami also placed several significant defensive players on Injured Reserve in recent weeks, including edge rusher Bradley Chubb, edge rusher Andrew Van Ginkel and linebacker Jerome Baker. In fact, four of the 11 defensive players who started for Miami against the Chiefs back in Week 9 will be unavailable in this game.

Additionally, Miami listed safety DeShone Elliott (calf), safety Jevon Holland (knees), running back Raheem Mostert (knee/ankle) and wide receiver Jaylen Waddle (ankle) as “Questionable” for Saturday. It’s worth noting that all four of those players are considered starters for the Dolphins, so it would be a significant development if any of those four ended up not playing.

                    2. Slowing down the Dolphins begins with containing their running game.

The Dolphins’ passing game garners a lot of attention, and for good reason, but Miami’s offense – which finished with the second-most points of any team – begins with its running game.

Miami’s primary running back this season has been veteran Raheem Mostert, who led the NFL with 18 rushing touchdowns this year. Mostert also recorded 30 rushes of 10+ yards, which ranked fourth in the league among all players. Mostert is dealing with knee and ankle injuries that will be worth monitoring entering Saturday’s game, but Miami also employs one of the league’s most dynamic young players in rookie tailback De’Von Achane.

Achane, who didn’t play against the Chiefs back in Week 9, racked up 800 rushing yards on just 103 attempts this season, averaging 7.3 yards-per-carry while tallying 22 runs of 10+ yards.

Now, for what it’s worth, Miami’s running game slowed down in recent weeks. From Week 1 through Week 13, the Dolphins owned the league’s No. 2 rushing offense at 143.3 yards-per-game. That number dropped to 117.6 yards-per-game between Week 14 and the end of the regular season, which ranked 14th in the NFL and coincided with a stretch in which Miami lost three of five games.

It’s all to say that slowing down Miami’s offense begins with containing their running game, and particularly on a frigidly cold night, it’s likely that the Dolphins will try to run the ball early and often.

                    3. Conversely, the Chiefs will aim to establish their rushing attack on Saturday.

With temperatures set to potentially make Saturday’s matchup one of the coldest games in NFL history, it’s likely that Kansas City will lean on its running game quite a bit. Fortunately, tailback Isiah Pacheco compiled the top statistical game of his career two weeks ago against Cincinnati, rushing for 130 yards on just 18 carries.

Miami was generally quite good against the run this season, but a combination of injuries and other factors led to the Dolphins allowing 288 rushing yards over the last two weeks. The Chiefs will aim to keep that trend going on Saturday.

                    4. Nobody gets rid of the football faster than Dolphins’ quarterback Tua Tagovailoa.

The Dolphins’ passing attack – which racked up the most yards on average (265.5) of any team this year – is predicated on lightning quick throws from quarterback Tua Tagovailoa. In fact, Tagovailoa recorded the fastest average time to throw (2.32 seconds) of any quarterback in the NFL this year, throwing the football in fewer than 2.5 seconds on 62.6 percent of his dropbacks.

Tagovailoa was tremendously effective with those quick throws, too, earning recognition from Pro Football Focus as the league’s top quarterback when he gets rid of the ball in fewer than 2.5 seconds. On dropbacks of longer than 2.5 seconds, however, that PFF ranking drops to 12th in the NFL.

The Chiefs did a great job of covering Tagovailoa’s first read back in Week 9, forcing him to hold on to the ball for 2.52 seconds on average. Two tenths of a second may not seem like a big deal, but when it comes to a timing, rhythm-based offense like Miami’s, they make all of the difference in the world. Kansas City will need to produce a similar effort on Saturday in order to slow down Tagovailoa and the Dolphins’ passing game.

                    5. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes will make the 15th playoff start of his career on Saturday.

Mahomes has started 14 postseason games during his remarkable career, marking the second-most for any quarterback through seven seasons in NFL history. Only Joe Flacco (15) has more, and keep in mind, Mahomes wasn’t the Chiefs’ full-time starter during his rookie campaign. Additionally, Mahomes is only one victory shy of matching Tom Brady (12) for the most playoff wins through seven seasons in league history.

Mahomes already owns the league record for touchdown passes (35) and passing yards (4,084) in the playoffs through seven career seasons, setting those marks in only five years as the Chiefs’ starter.

It’s all to say that Mahomes is off to one of the greatest starts for any player in NFL history, and he has an opportunity to add to that resume this Saturday as the Chiefs take on the Dolphins.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Tyreek Hill and the Miami Dolphins missed out on the opportunity to play the Kansas City Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium back in November, when the NFL had moved their high-profile matchup to Frankfurt, Germany.

Hill and Co. will finally get their chance on Saturday night.

With a whole lot more at stake, too.

The wide receiver will be playing in Kansas City for the first time since the Chiefs sent him to the Dolphins when the teams meet in a wild-card playoff game. And along with what figures to be plenty of boos — Hill has actively needled the Chiefs on social media since the trade — he will be greeted by wind chills expected to be well below zero at kickoff.

“We’re competitors. You’ve seen me — I have that fire — and he’s the same way,” said Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who helped turn Hill into a star during his first six seasons in the league. “That’s what makes him so great. And we’re still friends in the offseason and all that, but when you’re on the field, you’re competing to win. That’s just how it is.”

Make no mistake: The Chiefs know how to win this time of year.

While the Dolphins are in the postseason in consecutive years for the first time since 2001, the Chiefs will be playing their 15th straight home playoff game, not counting three Super Bowl appearances. It’s a streak that dates to Jan. 15, 2017, back when Hill was wrapping up his rookie season and Mahomes had yet to take the reigns of one of the NFL’s most dynamic offenses.

“We play a lot of big games — games on short rest, night games — and having that experience will help,” Mahomes said. “A lot of guys on this team have done that, so the step up you see going into the playoffs, we make it a little smaller, because we’ve been in games like this. We can rely on our experience and be the best team we can be.”

The Chiefs wrapped up their eighth straight AFC West title with one game left in the regular season, so Mahomes and several of their biggest stars were able to sit out a win over the Chargers, and instead prepare for another playoff appearance.

The Dolphins, meanwhile, are limping in both literally and figuratively.

A wave of late-season injuries has left coach Mike McDaniel with a patchwork defense and cobbled-together pass rush, while consecutive losses to Baltimore and Buffalo denied the Dolphins the chance to host a game this weekend.

And avoid the frigid weather gripping the Midwest. The game in Kansas City is expected to be among the coldest in NFL history, and Miami has lost its past 10 games when the temperature is 40 degrees or lower at kickoff.

“The team will be fired up to go and embrace the challenge,” McDaniel said, “and there’s many layers to why it’s a challenge. For us in-house, we all believe in each other and want to get a losing taste out of our mouths. That’s the only objective.”

The Dolphins experienced the same losing taste in November, when the Chiefs beat them 21-14 in Germany.

“Previous games, wins, losses — they mean nothing. That has absolutely no bearing on what’s going to happen,” Chiefs safety Justin Reid said. “The best team is going to come out on top.”

                          PLAYOFF PROSPECTS

Miami has won all three of its playoff games against the Chiefs, two wild-card matchups and a divisional-round game in 1971 that remains the longest game in NFL history. But the Dolphins’ more recent playoff history has been bleak. They’ve not won a game since Dec. 30, 2000, when they beat the Colts in overtime, and they have only one playoff road win since 1972.

                          WHAT A RUSH

The Dolphins signed Melvin Ingram to the active roster and veterans Justin Houston and Bruce Irvin early in the week, hoping to fortify a pass rush decimated by injuries. Jaelan Phillips tore his Achilles tendon and Bradley Chubb is out with a torn ACL, while linebackers Andrew Van Ginkel, Jerome Baker and Cameron Goode have been placed on injured reserve.

“It’s really a special room to have this many good rushers on the same team at one time, so a lot of knowledge,” said Irvin, who was recently released from Detroit’s practice squad. “Hopefully we can be together longer than one week.”

                          OPTIMISTIC OUTLOOK

The Dolphins are optimistic that wide receiver Jaylen Waddle will be back from a high ankle sprain and running back Raheem Mostert from an ankle injury after each missed the past two games. They will also have De’Von Achane available against Kansas City after the speedy running back missed their game in Germany with a knee injury.

                            THE FLIP SIDE

The Chiefs are as healthy as they have been all season. Left tackle Wanya Morris is their only injury of note after he went into the concussion protocol against the Chargers last week. But he was only playing because of a neck injury to Donovan Smith, who has practiced all week and is expected to play for the first time since Dec. 3 against Green Bay.

                            FLIPPED SCRIPTS

The Chiefs are usually the team putting up big points, but it was the Dolphins who led the NFL in offense for the first time in 30 years at more than 400 yards per game. Meanwhile, the Chiefs overcame inconsistency on offense — they led the NFL in dropped passes — by leaning on the league’s No. 2 ranked defense, which held 13 of 17 opponents to 20 points or fewer.

“They give us different looks. They present one-high deals, then go to two-high. They present two-high deals, then have fire zones,” Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa said, “so we’ll just have to be ready and then with their (Cover) 0s that they have, too. So we’ve just got to be ready with that and yeah, here we go.”

The exciting postseason matchup will be played on a frozen tundra in Kansas City this weekend.

The (11-6) Kansas City Chiefs will begin their postseason quest for a repeat championship on Saturday night, hosting the (11-6) Miami Dolphins on GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium in sub-zero temperatures. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. Arrowhead time.

The Chiefs enter the weekend as 4.5-point favorites, according to DraftKings Sportsbook.

Kansas City’s freezing conditions will be the overarching theme of this postseason battle. During his career, the Dolphins’ quarterback Tua Tagovailoa has struggled to overcome cold weather. This could affect his ability to utilize wide receiver Tyreek Hill — who should be well-motivated for his first game in Arrowhead since Kansas City traded him to Miami.

I have five things to watch in the primetime matchup:

                              1. Defending Miami’s speed on the ground

                              1915740115.jpg

The Miami offense is built on speed. In the Week 9 matchup, the Kansas City defense stepped up to limit that explosiveness on the ground. But rookie running back Devon Achane did not play in Frankfurt — and has since emerged as one of the Dolphins’ most dangerous weapons.

“They’ve all got speed; they built it that way,” Chiefs’ defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo pointed out to reporters on Wednesday. “Tyreek leads that charge, but we didn’t face 28 last time… That’s another weapon they didn’t have before.”

Running back Raheem Mostert managed 85 yards and a score in the last game, finding space in the second half to tighten the score. Now he’ll be paired with Achane, who averaged 7.8 yards per carry over 103 attempts this season.

Miami wants to get to the perimeter with both players, but it won’t be as easy this time. Linebacker Nick Bolton missed the first game — but noticed his teammates’ aggressiveness on the outside.

“We were doing a good job of setting the edge on runs and being physical at the line of scrimmage with our cornerbacks,” he told reporters in the locker room on Thursday. “I feel like a lot of teams that play against this team don’t press a lot because of their speed. We have guys that can press the line of scrimmage and run, so that helps us.”

                              2. Defending Miami’s speed on passes

                              1888605943.jpg

The Dolphins’ effectiveness on the ground opens up passing plays — where plenty of speed is also available. In the first game, Kansas City succeeded at forcing third-and-longs, making Tagovailoa play as a dropback passer.

If Achane can break more runs open, it could give more room to Hill, who only totaled 62 yards in the first matchup.

“He practices just as fast as he plays in the games, so we saw it all,” Spagnuolo remembered of Hill’s time in Kansas City. “You do have to treat him differently, I think our guys understand that: proper leverage if we’re in man, proper leverage when you’re in zone, have 22 eyeballs on them, know where he is all the time.

“He can hurt you in a lot of different ways. They hand the ball off to him, they jet sweep him, they throw it to him, screens — the whole thing.”

The Chiefs won’t be able to keep the ball out of Hill’s hands all the time. Cornerback Trent McDuffie knows this — and acknowledged the importance of continuing to pursue after the catch.

“A big thing is open-field tackling, and getting off blocks,” McDuffie said in the locker room on Tuesday. “This is a game where all 11 are needed every single play. That swarm — that relentlessness — that Coach Spags talks about? That needs to be on display this weekend.”

                                3. Patrick Mahomes against Vic Fangio

The Miami defense will be playing through an extensive list of injuries to impact players. It will take an incredible game plan to overcome that — but that’s exactly what defensive coordinator Vic Fangio can do.

“They’re a good defense,” Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes acknowledged on Tuesday. “They have a great defensive coordinator in Vic Fangio, who I know really well. He has done a great job of having different schemes every time I play against him.”

Mahomes’ career low single-game passer rating came in a 22-9 win over Denver in 2021, when Fangio was the head coach there. The veteran defensive play-caller has disrupted Mahomes’ rhythm multiple times.

                                4. Kansas City’s left tackle

                                1778154707.jpg
Photo by Mario Hommes/DeFodi Images via Getty Images

With rookie Wanya Morris officially ruled out with a concussion, veteran left tackle Donovan Smith is projected to return to the starting lineup. He has been dealing with a neck injury — and not seen the field since Week 13.

The Chiefs, however, need to be wary. A few weeks ago, Smith’s initial return to the practice field was cut short when he suffered a setback. If that happens in this game, Kansas City needs to have a plan that doesn’t involve flipping right tackle Jawaan Taylor to the other side.

If Smith doesn’t make it through the whole game, watch for left guard Joe Thuney to kick out — and veteran Nick Allegretti to fill in at left guard.

                                5. Overwhelming Miami’s depleted front

The Dolphins will be without their three most-used edge defenders on Saturday — along with linebacker Jerome Baker, who has led with the second level in snaps this season.

Kansas City needs to take advantage by pounding the rock. Running back Isiah Pacheco should take advantage of the offensive line winning the battle up front — especially on stretch runs, which would take advantage of Miami’s weakened defensive edges.

The Chiefs may have to chip away at it for a while — but a consistent ground attack should wear out the depleted front, limiting the obvious passing downs where Fangio can dial up blitzes.

Let’s hope the temperatures slows the Dolphins metabolism down to a crawl.
