Hello Crowd..
If you had not heard Of Linux its ok….
What is it you ask? A Viable Alternatve Operating system for your computer
A Screenshot of my PC’s Desktop
High Res-
http://chillplace.net/coppermine/albums/userpics/10001/desktop_new.jpgIt is Free – and I mean Free in two ways…. Free as in Beer and Free as In Speech
Free as In Beer????
As with anything you can pay money for some extra things… such as Tech Support and Printed Manual’s…. But You can Get a Free Full Functual Copy To Download off the internet.
Free as In Speech????
Linux is Distrubed under the GPL Licence, Basicly it gives you the complete program for you to do whatever you want to it as long as you re-release what you did for Free as well- etcYou have the Freedom to do what you want with it… No big Company to say you cant know how “that” works
See
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GNU_General_Public_LicenseWhY is it the Way of the Future?
Because What Goes Up Must come Down…. Microsoft wont Last forever and they have been eluding to future O.S. Releases as being Rental Versions where you pay an Annual Fee-its the Way of the Future because You are NOT a Major Spyware Target-
Spy and Mal Ware at the current time attack Windows- I have not seen a Linux Spyware Program (im sure there is at least ONE out there)Mac OS is based of of UNIX and So Is LINUX –
Now there are many Different Flavors/Brands/ “DISTRO’S” Of Linux-
SUSE , UBUNTU, XanDros, Damn Small Linux, Mandrake /Red Hat’s , Slax/SlackWare, Gentoo, FreeBSD/OpenBSD
Check http://www.distrowatch.com for a complete list and Links etc… or do a Google Search…
Some topics I expect we’ll cover:
1. Installation
2. What apps do what?
3. My (hardware) isn’t working (right)
4. Multi-media issuesRemember, if you need help sooner rather than later:
1. Install X-Chat
2. Connect to the Freenode network
3. Join the #suse channel
4. Ask away. There are usually about 280 helpful souls in there.OR Message Me Via AOL or YAHOO if I am around I will see what I can do.
I’ll also try to keep this up as a sort of FAQ. Non-question-specific posts will have a large, bold heading (see post #2).
I reccoment that yohttp://www.frozentech.com/content/livecd.phpu try out Linux without installing anything on your PC at all. Download one of the LiveCD versions, burn it to a disc, then reboot the PC with the LiveCD in the drive and your computer will load Linux and your hard disk will not be changed. You can get them at either of these links:
http://en.opensuse.org/Released_Version
http://www.mepis.org/
http://www.knoppix.org/(COMPELTE LIST HERE http://www.frozentech.com/content/livecd.php)
*Note: If I start asking you http://www.frozentech.com/content/livecd.phpto run a bunch of things from a command prompt it isn’t because that’s the only way to do it, it’s because that’s the only way I can “control” what is happening on your end.
NOT all hardware works with Linux – So that’s one reason to boot the LIVE CD… also one CD might work.. One Might not Depends on your computer –
(Also if you have a Sega DreamCast you can run Linux on there)
BEFORE ANY MAJOR O.S. INSTALL BACK YOUR STUFF UP.
I will say it again…
BACK YOUR SHIT UP!
Now… if you like what you see .. and hear…. continue
06/20/2006 at 4:08 am #758730Do yourself and me a favor – use SuSE 10.1 It’s stable, there is a commercial version, it has excellent hardware support, there’s no good reason to not use it.
The home page for the community (read free) version is here:
http://en.opensuse.org/Welcome_to_openSUSE.org
You want version 10.1 The download links are here:
http://en.opensuse.org/Released_Version
I have SuSE installed, now what?
If you have NVIDIA Graphics or ATI you have to download the drivers and install them.
Here… is a link that should get you up and running in no time with everything you need.

06/20/2006 at 4:55 am #758731Awsome Slag!!!!
To anyone that chooses to give this a shot, Slag WILL be able to help you with most potential snags you might encounter. He has helped me on a few occasions already and I couldn’t be happier.
If you want to beat the Gates Empire, this is the only way to do it outside bying a Mac. Give it a shot.

That is true. BUT, it is still a more stable system than any PC with Windows on it.

Aaaaah, stability; I’m practically sold on it already.
06/27/2006 at 5:57 pm #758812Well, I got my RAM card today; it fits, and it works properly. That’s the good news; the bad news is that I booted my pc from the linux KDE format of the LiveDVD and the thing went through a series of very scary sights and sounds before I interrupted the process.
06/29/2006 at 7:15 am #758821Try it again.
Dont be scared
Good nite
06/29/2006 at 1:23 pm #758822Down to my last monitor; we’ll see.
07/02/2006 at 8:05 pm #758864I tried the DSL you suggested and it works but very, very slowly.
