Notable Quotables:
Chiefs:

“We put me on the run, and I threw it across my body and did all the stuff I’ve grown to do as I’ve been in the NFL and my whole career. I didn’t have any pain. I was still able to do it. I wanted to make sure I was able to do that before I got back on that field.”

–Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes

Titans:

“We want to get [Derrick Henry] carries, get him going early, set the tone that way, and then play off of that”

–Titans QB Ryan Tannehill

OddsShark Super Computer Prediction:

I think the scores were accidentally reversed.
A “push” would have the Chiefs winning by 6.

Patrick Mahomes will likely be
back in this one, but this is a
tough game for the Chiefs.
The Titans have won the last
three in the series, including
a playoff game. They did it
by being the more physical
team. They will use that
style in this one to pull off
another upset.

It was 24 days ago that Kansas City Chiefs’ quarterback Patrick Mahomes left the field following an injury to his right knee. The reigning NFL MVP and league-leader in multiple statistical categories was central to Kansas City’s Super Bowl aspirations, and for many teams, his departure would signal the end of those lofty goals.

The Chiefs, however, are not like most.

Kansas City held on to defeat the Denver Broncos on Thursday Night Football after losing Mahomes in the first half behind veteran quarterback Matt Moore, who went on to lead the Chiefs within a score of the Green Bay Packers a week later and to a victory over the Minnesota Vikings last Sunday.

Moore was steady and reliable for Kansas City, compiling a 105.5 passer rating over the course of his two starts while keeping the Chiefs competitive throughout despite the immense responsibility that comes along with filling in for the league’s best player.

ovxidtng4ker2aedhn2s.jpg

Kansas City’s championship dreams are still very much alive because of Moore and the rest of the roster’s ability to pull together through adversity – notably the improved play by the defense of late. It’s the mark of a great team, rallying through the tough times rather than wilting under the circumstances.

And now about a month since perhaps this season’s defining moment took place on that critical night in Denver, the news fans throughout Chiefs Kingdom have been waiting for was finally delivered on Friday.

Mahomes is back.

“Unless something happens here, he’ll be the guy that plays,” said Head Coach Andy Reid. “You can go whatever direction you want to go with it. I’m going to see how he did after this practice, but right now, that’s what it looks like.”

uarvg4ekevynul9slxco.jpg

Barring any setbacks, Mahomes will return to action on Sunday when the Chiefs take on the Tennessee Titans in Nashville. It’s mammoth news for Kansas City as the final seven weeks of the season come into focus and their Super Bowl goals remain very real.

And while the injury sidelined Mahomes for some time physically, his mentality remains unshaken.

“I’m still in a great spot. We played two great games these last two weeks and the team played awesome defense, special teams played well, and Matt went in and played very well,” Mahomes said. “For me, I just stayed into it. I think you all could see me on the sideline, I was just as into the game as if I was playing, and I’m glad to be back out there with the guys.”

That return will come against an interesting team in the Titans, who are 2-1 under new starting quarterback Ryan Tannehill following Tennessee’s decision to bench former first-round pick Marcus Mariota.

wcb0k0hucibu7nl55tjd.jpg

In those three starts, Tannehill – a former first-round pick himself – has thrown for 836 yards, six touchdowns and just three interceptions while completing more than 70 percent of his passes. He’s led Tennessee to as many wins in his three weeks of action as Mariota did in twice as many games, and the 31-year-old Tannehill has yet to lose at home.

After struggling in his final few seasons as a Miami Dolphin, Tannehill seems to – at least so far – have resurrected his career with Tennessee.

“I’ve always thought he was a really good football player. He’s a really good athlete. We can’t just think that this is a quarterback who sits there and throws it, he can really extend the play and give you some headaches,” said Defensive Coordinator Steve Spagnuolo. “I don’t consider him a backup quarterback that’s now starting, he was a starter for a long time, so we’re going to approach it that way.”

Tannehill has pass-catchers Adam Humphries and rookie A.J. Brown amongst others at his disposal offensively, but he may be without a pair of productive players in wide receiver Corey Davis, who is listed as doubtful with a hip injury, and tight end Delanie Walker, who is already listed as out due to an ankle injury.

Brown has been Tannehill’s most productive target over the course of his three starts – leading Tennessee with 156 yards through the air – while tailback Derrick Henry has bounced back from a rough game in Denver a few weeks ago to average 4.47 yards-per-carry over the Titans’ last three games.

Henry is a sizable runner at six-foot-three and 247-pounds who can run with the best of them despite his immense stature, providing the Chiefs’ defense with a considerable challenge up front.

“He’s a very good ‘back who’s tough to bring down,” said linebacker Reggie Ragland, who played with Henry at the University of Alabama. “We have to make sure we do a good job of moving our feet against him.”

m0juyiesmkpthif5qbbw.jpg

The Chiefs are coming off one of their top defensive performances of the season against Minnesota, where they held the league’s leading rusher, Dalvin Cook, to just 3.4 yards-per-carry. It marked Cook’s lowest rushing average this season in games where he received at least 20 carries, and while Henry is no easy task, the Chiefs will be looking to mirror that success on Sunday.

And if Kansas City can slow down Henry, the pass-rush will likely have an opportunity to do some damage. The Titans have yielded the most sacks in the NFL this season (38), surrendering four or more in all but three games. Kansas City, conversely, has 15 sacks over the last three weeks alone. The Chiefs managed just one against the Vikings last Sunday, but defensive tackle Chris Jones – who was playing in his first game since Week 5 – led the NFL with seven pressures.

This group has proven that they can get after the passer lately and they’ll have a chance to continue that against Tennessee.

hhnlfvsllul0hxvymym6.jpg

The Chiefs’ offense, meanwhile, is about the healthiest it has been all season. In fact, Mahomes has only played one game this season with wide receivers Tyreek Hill and Sammy Watkins both on the field, and that was all the way back in Week 1.

Mahomes will have both players available offensively on Sunday, not to mention tight end Travis Kelce and the rest of Kansas City’s high-powered attack. That’s significant, as in the 17 games that Mahomes, Watkins, Hill and Kelce have all been on the field over the last two seasons, the Chiefs are 13-4 while averaging 35.6 points-per-contest.

Tennessee has been respectable on defense this season – allowing just 18.3 points-per-game under Head Coach and former Chiefs’ linebacker Mike Vrabel – but the unit will be missing a few pieces this weekend, including Pro Bowl defensive tackle Jurrell Casey and cornerback Malcolm Butler.

It still won’t come easy, as the Titans have yielded more than 23 points just once this year – doing so last week against Carolina – but Mahomes and company are certainly up for the challenge.

After all, this edition of the Chiefs is no stranger to overcoming obstacles.

“I think the biggest thing we’ve done as a team is just build every single week. It’s a long season and we still have a lot to go, but every single day, it seems like we’re getting better in every aspect of the game,” Mahomes said. “We went through a stretch where we lost games that we didn’t want to, but we now see that everyone is pulling together and building together, and I’m excited for the rest of the season.”

The homestretch begins on Sunday, and for the first time in about a month, Kansas City has the league MVP back under center.

Chiefs-Titans Preview

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — For Kansas City coach Andy Reid, the decision on when Patrick Mahomes plays again is easy.

It’s when the reigning NFL MVP is physically ready.

Of course, Mahomes has wanted back on the field since soon after dislocating his right kneecap Oct. 17 in a win at Denver. But the Chiefs (6-3) have gone 2-1 with Matt Moore. Combined with sights set on a fourth straight AFC West title, that makes it easier to think longer term than Sunday’s kickoff on the road in Tennessee.

“We’re not going to put him out there unless he is safe to do it,” Reid said. “But he has to go through this work level and keep increasing it and see how he does. That’s where we’re at.”

Titans cornerback Logan Ryan isn’t sure if Mahomes or Moore will start, saying he won’t “chase ghosts.” He’s preparing for the NFL’s second-best passing offense, with the Chiefs averaging 300.7 yards a game no matter who’s at quarterback. Ryan wants the Titans to get back to the defense that didn’t allow a team to score more than 20 points through the first seven games.

“We got to go play our brand of defense against their brand of offense, and there will be some fireworks,” Ryan said.

This is a crucial game for the Titans (4-5), who are coming off a 30-20 loss at Carolina. They can’t wait until next week’s bye to fix some of their offensive issues when they’re mired at the bottom of the AFC South, where they’re only two back of first-place Houston still with two to play against the Texans.

“We all have to have a sense of urgency,” Titans running back Derrick Henry said. “We know what we’re up against. We know what we have to do.”

READY AND WAITING

Moore threw for 275 yards and a TD in leading the Chiefs to a 26-23 win over Minnesota last week, and he’s had at least 250 yards passing and a 100 or higher passer rating in what he called a wild couple of weeks.

“I’ve learned a lot,” Moore said. “So what it means moving forward is that I have to be ready to go at all times and who knows what the future holds. In this league, you never know. I’m trying to be the best I can be every day and that is all.”

GIVE IT TO HENRY

The Titans have been shut out in the first half four times this season — all losses. A bigger issue in Carolina was that Henry ran only twice before halftime, though he still finished with 99 yards from scrimmage and two touchdowns thanks to a big drive to open the third quarter.

Now Tennessee has another chance to run against a Chiefs’ defense that ranks 29th against the run. Kansas City has allowed at least 180 yards rushing four times this season, though the Chiefs have held their last three opponents to 118 yards or fewer. Still, running Henry early and often would give the Titans a chance to get their offense back on track.

“We want to get him carries, get him going early, set the tone that way, and then play off of that,” Titans quarterback Ryan Tannehill said.

REID VS. TITANS

Only Bill Belichick has more wins than Reid among active coaches, yet Reid is 1-7 all-time against the Titans, including 0-4 with Philadelphia. He’s 1/3 with the Chiefs, and his lone win came in 2013. Reid has lost three straight to two different Titans coaches. This will be his first game against Titans coach Mike Vrabel, who played his last two seasons in the NFL with Kansas City.

CLEAN UP THE MISTAKES

The Titans have hurt themselves more than the opponent has in their losses. Too often penalties have wiped out big gains, and they had three turnovers last week. They’ve also allowed an NFL-worst 38 sacks, and the combination of issues has made it tough to clean everything up.

“Eliminate the dumb things that we can control like the technique, the fundamental stuff,” Tannehill said. “When it comes down to execution, just execute and we’ll be in good shape.”

INJURY REPORT

The Chiefs are healing. Defensive end Frank Clark, who has missed two straight games with a neck issue, and cornerback Kendall Fuller, who has missed three games with an injured thumb, both returned to practice this week.

Titans center Ben Jones is working back from a concussion that kept him out of last week’s game. But Tennessee is banged up. Four-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle Jurrell Casey has not been practicing after missing a game. Wide receiver Corey Davis also has missed two straight practices with an injured hip, and starting inside linebacker Jayon Brown (groin) has not practiced.

NASHVILLE — The Titans face the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday at Nissan Stadium.

Here’s a look at six things to watch:

Running Game

I fully expected the Titans to pound the football early against the Panthers, and for one reason or another, it didn’t happen. So, consider this Take 2. Against the Chiefs on Sunday, the Titans need to control the football and keep it out of the hands of Kansas City’s offense to be successul. The Chiefs are ranked 29th in the NFL in rushing defense, and they’ve allowed some big rushing yards in games, including giving up 203 yards vs. the Ravens, 186 vs. the Lions, 180 vs. the Colts and 192 vs. the Texans. The Chiefs have stiffened up against the run in recent weeks, but Derrick Henry and the Titans need to change that on Sunday.

Containing Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes will return this week, but forget the woe is me attitude and the ‘Why couldn’t he have waited another week?’ thinking. AFC South brethren Indianapolis and Houston found a way to beat the Chiefs with Mahomes in the saddle, so the Titans need to find a way to do the same if they’re going to be contenders this season. It won’t be easy – Mahomes is a baller, a QB who throws no-look passes, tosses with his opposite hand, and 60-yard darts while also showing great escapability. The Titans need to find a way to keep him off the highlight reel, and out of the end zone.

The Kicking Game

It’s a shame this is an issue, but it is because the Titans have made it one. Titans kickers Cairo Santos (4-9), Cody Parkey (3-3) and Ryan Succop (0-3) are a combined 7-of-15 on field goals tries this season. If a few of those had gone through the uprights in games earlier this season, the Titans could be 6-3 right now instead of 4-5. After a tough week in Carolina, the Titans need Succop to be sharp against his previous employer. More on this to come, though…

A Fast Start

The Titans found themselves down 17-0 at the half vs the Panthers last weekend, and it was the continuation of an ugly trend. The Titans have been held scoreless in the first half of four of the team’s first nine games. The team has been outscored 43-34 in the first quarter this season, and 95-70 in the first half of games. The Chiefs, meanwhile, have outscored their opponents 161-108 in the first half of games this season, including 107-38 in the second quarter. The Titans need to get out of the gate well and make this a game from the get-go.

Titans Pass Defense

While the Titans will aim to pressure Mahomes, the Titans secondary will be on the spot while trying to slow down some of the NFL’s most dangerous weapons. And they’ll be doing so without cornerback Malcolm Butler, who was placed on Injured Reserve earlier this week. Enter LeShaun Sims, who will need to play well. But this will require a team effort, as the Chiefs have some scary targets in receivers Tyreek Hill and Sammy Watkins, along with tight end Travis Kelce. Five different Kansas City targets have at least one 100-yard game this season, including a nine-catch, 198-yard performance from Watkins.

Titans Need Touchdowns

After mentioning Succop among the things to watch just a few graphs up, I’m not going to turn around and minimize his role now. But the reality is the Titans are going to need touchdowns, not field goals, to beat the Chiefs. The Titans have been good in the red zone under quarterback Ryan Tannehill, who has thrown six touchdown passes in his first three starts. The problem the Titans have had is they haven’t been getting into the red zone enough. The Titans need to sustain drives and cap them off with scores.
