Chiefs 23.7
Lions 24.3Notable Quotables:
“It felt like [the defense was making progress] at the end of the first half last week. The second half was a little different.
As a staff, as a group of players and coaches, we’re still trying to figure out what it is we do best, who fits where. There is still a little bit of that going on and throughout the season we’ll be doing that.”
–Chiefs Defensive Coordinator Steve Spagnuolo
Lions:
“To me, Tom Brady is going to be the best ever for my whole life, that’s just how it is. But the way Pat’s going, he’s going to break every record in NFL history if he keeps this up. I love it, though. A Texas guy and I always brag about Texas football in here, so, you know, I’m cool with that. As long as it’s not against us.”
–Lions Safety Quandre Diggs

This is a game between two
undefeated teams as well.
The Lions do have a tie, but
they are off to a good start.
The Chiefs have already won
two road games, so they can
handle the road. Their players
will look even faster here in
this one. The Chiefs roll up
another big number with
Patrick Mahomes.
Things have gone pretty well through three weeks for the Kansas City Chiefs.
Quarterback Patrick Mahomes is leading the NFL in nearly every passing statistic, the offense is already breaking records and, most importantly, the record is a perfect 3-0.
The Chiefs are one of just three teams in the AFC without a loss so far – marking their third-straight season with an unblemished record through three weeks – and they’ll be looking to make it 4-0 this Sunday with a bout against the Detroit Lions at Ford Field.
It’s been four years since Kansas City last took the field against the Lions, doing so across the pond at Wembley Stadium in London. The Chiefs were struggling headed into that game as losers of five straight, but interestingly enough – following a 35-point victory – no team has won more games than the Chiefs (46) league-wide since that game.
Kansas City will look to keep that unprecedented run of success going on Sunday against a Lions’ team that has also yet to lose this season, with victories over the Los Angeles Chargers and Philadelphia Eagles to go along with a tie in Week 1 against the Arizona Cardinals.
The man commanding the offense through each of those contests has been veteran quarterback Matthew Stafford, who has spent over a decade in the Motor City after the Lions made the University of Georgia product the first overall pick in the draft back in 2009.
Stafford owns a 97.5 passer rating this season, tossing six touchdowns to two interceptions while leading a fourth-quarter comeback in each of the Lions’ last two games. The passing totals aren’t quite as high over the last couple years as they used to be – he ranked second in the NFL in passing yards between 2011 and 2017 – but Stafford is still more than capable of executing an offense at a high level.
“He has 11 years of experience and he’s a heck of a player,” said Head Coach Andy Reid. “He was a really good player coming out of college and he’s worked through all of the different things that have happened there. He has a great head coach and offensive coordinator now, and he’s playing good football.”

It’s worth mentioning that Stafford was a late addition to the injury report (hip) on Friday and is listed as questionable heading into Sunday’s contest. His status will be a major storyline to watch prior to the game as the next man up on Detroit’s depth chart is rookie signal caller David Blough, who has yet to appear in an NFL game.
Regardless, whoever suits up at quarterback will have pass-catchers Marvin Jones Jr. (15 catches for 200 yards and 1 touchdown), Kenny Golladay (14 catches for 176 yards and 2 touchdowns) and T.J. Hockenson (8 catches for 139 yards and 1 touchdown) at their disposal with second-year tailback Kerryon Johnson – who averaged 5.4 yards per rush just a year ago – handling the bulk of the carries on the ground.

The Lions also feature veteran wide receiver Danny Amendola on offense (11 catches for 141 yards and 1 touchdown), but his availability is in question as he battles a chest injury.
It’s an offense that has some playmakers, but perhaps the Lions’ most significant contributor of late has been the collective performance of the offensive line, which hasn’t yielded a sack in either of Detroit’s last two games.
It’s a streak the Chiefs’ pass-rush will be looking to end on Sunday after sacking Baltimore Ravens’ quarterback Lamar Jackson three times last week with contributions from defensive end Frank Clark, defensive tackle Chris Jones and defensive end Emmanuel Ogbah among others.
Ogbah, in particular, was central to that success, tallying nine pressures all by himself while continuing what’s been a strong start to his first season in Kansas City.
“I’d say this about Emmanuel: all he’s done is come in here and do everything that we’ve asked him to do to the best of his ability,” said Run Game Coordinator/Defensive Line Coach Brendan Daly. “He showed a little bit of toughness by battling through some injury issues during the training camp portion of things that came up from time-to-time. I thought that he did a great job handling them, but it affected his performance to a degree. I think he’s through some of that now and we’re seeing a little bit closer to what his physical tools and abilities are.”

Ogbah and the rest of the Chiefs’ defense will look to slow down the Lions’ attack and get the ball back in the hands of Mahomes and company, who have collectively been settling the league ablaze offensively.
Mahomes currently leads the NFL in passing yards (1,195), touchdowns (10), yards-per-attempt (10.5) and passer rating (134.9) without turning the ball over once. In fact, with 363 yards through the air on Sunday, Mahomes could set the all-time record for passing yards through the first four games of a season.
That may sound like a lot, but amazingly, Mahomes hasn’t thrown for less than 370 yards in any game this season while distributing the ball to pass-catchers Sammy Watkins (311 yards), Travis Kelce (284 yards), Demarcus Robinson (215 yards) and Mecole Hardman (158 yards).
The Chiefs are the only team in the league to feature four or more players with 150+ receiving yards this season, and they’ve all combined to haul in a league-leading 14 passing plays of 25+ yards.
That group will be going against a Detroit defense that ranks in the middle of the pack so far this season (20.3 points allowed per game) but has excelled in seizing opportunities, especially in last week’s victory over Philadelphia.
“They played physical football, they played a lot of man coverage, they got up in [the quarterback’s] face and they stopped the run game for the most part,” Mahomes said. “I think the biggest thing they did against the Eagles was that they capitalized on turnovers and I think that’s a big thing they focus on, trying to get the ball out – whether its interceptions or stripping the ball – so we’re going to try to protect the ball and move it down the field.”
The Lions have forced four turnovers in the last two weeks, and in last Sunday’s victory, the points they tallied off those takeaways ended up being the difference in the game.
Detroit could be without a key member of that defense, however, in cornerback Darius Slay, who is dealing with a hamstring injury and is questionable for the contest. Slay is one of the better defensive backs in the NFL and is undoubtedly the Lions’ top player in the secondary, so his status will be a major one to keep an eye on this weekend.
Kansas City is dealing with some injuries of their own, too, as wide receiver Tyreek Hill (shoulder), offensive tackle Eric Fisher (groin) and tailback Damien Williams (knee) will all miss the game due to various issues, but others have stepped up in a big way in their stead.
The coaching staff repeatedly preaches the “next man up” mentality when starters can’t play, and it was on full display last week as second-year tailback Darrel Williams racked up 109 yards of offense while picking up the game-clinching first down.
Williams’ performance may have surprised the football-watching world outside of One Arrowhead Drive, but not those inside the building.
“We felt comfortable about him coming out of last year. He had some really good snaps for us last year and he had a good camp and kind of retooled his body a little bit,” Reid said. “He got himself ready for this season and now he has an opportunity to reap the rewards of all the hard work he’s put in.”
Williams will likely get some more chances on Sunday alongside fellow tailback LeSean McCoy as Kansas City looks to maintain their perfect record in Detroit.

Chiefs-Lions Preview
DETROIT — Patrick Mahomes has led the Kansas City Chiefs to another strong start, setting records along the way.
The reigning NFL MVP is the first player in league history to have at least 350 yards passing and three touchdown passes without an interception in three straight games. In his first 20 starts, he has another league record with 13 300-yard passing games.
And if the 24-year-old superstar quarterback throws at least two TD passes for a 15th straight game against Detroit, he will match one of Peyton Manning’s league records set during the 2013 and 2014 seasons with the Denver Broncos.
“The way Pat’s going, he’s going to break every record in NFL history if he keeps this up,” Lions safety Quandre Diggs said.
Mahomes, though, is not coming to the Motor City cocky about his chances to match the mark after watching Detroit’s defense force three fumbles, recovering two, and allowing Philadelphia’s Carson Wentz to barely complete half his passes in a 27-24 win over the Eagles in Week 3.
“They played physical football,” Mahomes said. “They played a lot of man coverage. They really get up in everyone’s face and they stopped the run. I think with the Eagles, they really capitalized on turnovers. That’s the big thing they focus on. We’re going to try to protect the ball.”
Here are some other things to watch when Kansas City (3-0) plays the Lions (2-0-1) on Sunday:
MAKING A MARK
Detroit is the first NFL team with four players to have 100 yards receiving and a TD in a game through Week 3. Receiver Danny Amendola and rookie tight end T.J. Hockenson did it in the season-opening tie at Arizona. Receiver Kenny Golladay followed suit in the Week 2 win over the Chargers. In last week’s victory at Philadelphia, Marvin Jones became the fourth player on the team with 100 yards receiving and a score.
“Anytime we can spread the ball around and give the defense a lot to think about, I think it’s a positive for us,” quarterback Matthew Stafford said. “It’s a credit to those guys going out there and making plays. I’m happy for all of those guys that have done it and hopefully we’ll get more of it.”
SPREADING THE LOVE
Mahomes has also found a different receiver to target each week.
Sammy Watkins had 198 yards receiving and three TDs in the season-opening, 40-26 victory at Jacksonville. Demarcus Robinson had 174 and two scores in Week 2, a 28-10 win at Oakland. Mecole Hardman had the 83-yard TD reception in a 33-28 win against Baltimore last Sunday.
“That’s what it’s all about when you have a team of this stature and players on this team, it’s about spreading the ball around,” Watkins said. “Nobody has to go out there and struggle or try to do something don’t have to do.”
MEASURING UP
Detroit is unbeaten through Week 3 for the first time since 2011. Of course, few outside of the Lions’ locker room expect them to upset the Kansas City to extend the solid start.
“It’ll be a good test for us,” Stafford acknowledged.
GROWING PAINS
The Chiefs’ new defense under coordinator Steve Spagnuolo has gone through some growing pains, getting beaten through the air by Jacksonville in Week 1 and dominated on the ground by everyone else. Kansas City is giving up a league-high 6.2 yards per carry and allowing nearly 140 yards rushing per game.
“We play well in stretches,” safety Tyrann Mathieu said. “The first drive of every game hasn’t been a great drive for us defensively. I think we’ve given up a touchdown every time. Then, in the fourth quarter we get lax as well. End of the day that falls on me.”
STAFFORD’S SACKS
The previous five seasons, Detroit allowed Stafford to get sacked nearly three times a game on average. After seeing Stafford to get sacked three times in Week 1, the Lions have not surrendered a sack.

to watch for Week 4 game in Motown
from The Kansas City StarBy Herbie Teope
September 27, 2019 05:00 AMOnce is a fluke, but twice or more is a habit.
That is the approach the Kansas City Chiefs (3-0) must take Sunday at the Detroit Lions (2-0-1) at Ford Field because the Lions’ two-game winning streak hasn’t come by accident given their opponents.
The Lions are riding high after defeating the Los Angeles Chargers and Philadelphia Eagles, two playoff teams in 2018, so Detroit shouldn’t be taken lightly.
The Chiefs aren’t slouches, of course, and are widely regarded as one of the NFL’s elite teams. And Sunday’s matchup features two of the league’s remaining eight undefeated clubs, signaling fans will be treated a quality game.
Only one team can win, though, and the Chiefs enter the contest favored by 6.5 points despite being on the road. The odds makers believe Kansas City will have no problem securing a victory, but it might not be that easy.
Here are key areas to monitor for the Chiefs:
Chiefs defense against Lions offense
The Chiefs defense remains a work in progress, but head coach Andy Reid and defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo said there unit is making progress and growing with each week.Kansas City’s defense, which enters the contest ranked 24th in the league in total defense, faces a stiff test against a quality offense led by veteran quarterback Matthew Stafford.
Stafford has weapons around him with wide receivers Marvin Jones, Kenny Golladay and Danny Amendola, running back Kerryon Johnson and tight ends Jesse James and rookie T.J. Hockenson.
“As a group, we think this is the toughest we’re going to go against,” Spagnuolo said Thursday. “I’ve got a great deal of respect for Danny Amendola inside. We had him in St. Louis — I’ve always loved him — I think he’s a great player in any role he plays.
“And you got two outside guys that can run with a quarterback, by the way, who has been in the league a long time, and he can throw. He can make all the throws, and he’s got a strong arm. They present a huge challenge.”
High praise from the defensive coordinator, especially when considering the Chiefs faced the league’s No. 1 offense in Week 3.
Spagnuolo, though, has a point because the Lions present offensive weapons across the board.
With Stafford leading the charge, the Lions rank 11th in passing (269 yards per game) and 15th in scoring (22.3 points per game).
Jones also comes off a game where he totaled six catches for 101 yards and a touchdown on nine targets. Golladay had his turn with a big game in Week 2 when he produced eight catches for 117 yards and a touchdown on 10 targets.
Amendola, though, did not practice Wednesday and Thursday while dealing with a chest injury, so his availability for Sunday’s game remains in the air.
Frank Clark vs. Lions offensive line
The Lions have done a good job of protecting Stafford and have allowed three sacks on the young season. But if there’s a breakout game coming for Clark, it might very well be against the Lions.
Unlike the first three quarterbacks the Chiefs faced, Stafford isn’t widely regarded as the most mobile signal-caller in the league.
The Lions quarterback is a classic pocket passer, and Clark and the rest of the Chiefs edge rushers likely won’t get worn out chasing after a scrambling-style passer as the game progresses.
Clark will likely command more than his fair share of double-team blocks, much like he did in Week 3 against the Baltimore Ravens, but the going gets easier should he beat the blocking scheme.
Additionally, the more attention that is paid to Clark, the door only opens wider for Chris Jones, Derrick Nnadi, Alex Okafor, Emmanuel Ogbah and Tanoh Kpassagnon to get after Stafford.
Patrick Mahomes and Co. vs. banged up Lions secondary
The Lions picked a bad week for cornerbacks Darius Slay (hamstring) and Rashaan Melvin (knee) to deal with injuries. Both players were limited in practice on Wednesday and Thursday, and a less than 100 percent pass defense won’t bode well for a Lions defense facing the league’s top passing offense.
Slay’s availability is critical for the Lions given his status as one of the NFL’s top cornerbacks. The 2017 All-Pro selection and two-time Pro Bowler can’t cover all the Chiefs wide receivers by himself, of course, but his presence on the field will only help.
If Slay is not on the field, it’s basically full-go for Mahomes to enjoy yet another stellar game to add to his growing resume.
Then again, isn’t it basically a green light for Mahomes and his group of pass catchers on any given week?
Limiting mistakes vs. opportunistic Lions defense
Taking care of the football appeared to be the theme of the week when Reid and Mahomes addressed the media on Wednesday, and for good reason.
In their two wins, the Lions forced four turnovers and have five takeaways on the season, a total tied for ninth best in the league.
“They have made a living off of turnovers on defense,” Reid said.
“I think that’s a big thing they capitalize on,” Mahomes said. “So, we’re going to try to protect the ball and move it down the field.”
So far, so good for Mahomes, who hasn’t thrown an interception to go along with his league-leading 10 touchdowns passes through three games.
The Chiefs signal-caller already does a good job of protecting the football, but the focus is heightened against a Lions defensive unit that thrives on forcing turnovers.

Cheat sheet, key factor, matchup to watchby Dave Birkett, Detroit Free Press
Published 6:01 a.m. ET Sept. 28, 2019 | Updated 4:58 p.m. ET Sept. 28, 2019
Know the foe: Kansas City Chiefs (3-0)
Coach: Andy Reid (198-124-1 overall, 68-31 with Chiefs).
Key players: QB Patrick Mahomes, WR Sammy Watkins, TE Travis Kelce, DE Frank Clark, DT Chris Jones.
Last game: Beat the Baltimore Ravens, 33-28.
Last meeting: 2015 season: Chiefs won, 45-10.
The buzz: The Chiefs are a Super Bowl contender and one of the two best teams in the NFL, with the reigning MVP at quarterback and array of skill players who make life tough on opposing offenses. Mahomes is coming off a season in which he threw for 5,097 yards and 50 touchdowns, and he’s on pace to put up even better numbers this fall. He looks like a once-in-a-generation talent, and he’s running an offense perfectly suited to his skills. The Chiefs won’t have top receiver Tyreek Hill in the lineup Sunday because of a clavicle injury, but they’re not lacking for weapons on offense. Kelce might be the best tight end in the NFL, Watkins scored three touchdowns in the season opener and LeSean McCoy looks renewed in this offense. One cause for concern: Left tackle Eric Fisher is out following hernia surgery.
While the Chiefs have maybe the best offense in the NFL, their defense is suspect. Clark and Jones are a nice 1-2 punch on the defensive line, but Kansas City finished 31st in total defense and 24th in scoring defense last year. Clark, the former Michigan star, got his first sack of the season last week and had an interception in the opener, but the Ravens had success running the ball between the tackles last week. Bashaud Breeland has been a revelation at cornerback, and Tyrann Mathieu is a ballhawk at safety. No team has more takeaways over the past four years than the Chiefs’ 115.
The Lions will win if … Kerryon Johnson has 20 or more carries. The Lions can’t expect to trade points with one of the NFL’s best offenses and expect to win. They need to control the clock and extend possessions, and that means they need a big day from the running game. Johnson had 20 carries for a measly 36 yards in last week’s win over the Philadelphia Eagles, and while that type of production won’t cut it Sunday, the Lions must feature Johnson in a similar fashion. The Chiefs haven’t been great against the run this year. They gave up 203 yards on the ground last week, and Oakland’s Josh Jacobs broke a 51-yard run the week before. If Johnson has success, the Lions have a chance to pull off the upset.
The Chiefs will win if … they get at least 10 offensive possessions. That’s about what an NFL team averages per game, and if the Chiefs hit that number Sunday, it means they’re moving the ball well on offense and not allowing any extended drives on defense. Kansas City currently ranks third in the NFL in points per possession (3.26), according to Football Outsiders’ drive stats. The Lions, meanwhile, are tied for 21st at 1.71 points per drive. The more times the Chiefs touch the ball, the more Mahomes sees the field, the better their chances are of winning.
Matchup to watch: Lions DE Trey Flowers vs. Chiefs LT Cam Erving
Flowers finally produced last week against the Eagles after a slow start to the season. He had a team-high eight tackles and was credited with his first sack of the season when Carson Wentz gave himself up on the final play of the first half. Flowers hasn’t put up big sack numbers throughout his career, but he’s a relentless edge player who knows how to get after quarterbacks. With Fisher out, Erving — a first-round pick by Cleveland in 2015 — will start at left tackle, and that’s a matchup the Lions can exploit. Mahomes has never played a regular season game indoors in the NFL. If Flowers makes his life miserable, Mahomes may want to avoid domes going forward.
