The grills will be hot, the lights will be on and the atmosphere promises to be electric on Sunday night as the Kansas City Chiefs take the field at Arrowhead Stadium for a prime-time clash against an old nemesis in the Indianapolis Colts.

It marks just Kansas City’s second game within the rambunctious confines of Arrowhead after a stretch of three road games through the first four weeks of the year, and with a national audience watching, the Chiefs return home this weekend with the intent of starting 5-0 for a third-straight season.

It was nine months ago that the Chiefs defeated Indianapolis in the Divisional Round of the postseason at Arrowhead, 31-13, but the re-match will be without a central figure from last year’s bout following the sudden retirement of Pro Bowl quarterback Andrew Luck during the preseason.

Luck’s departure left many wondering how competitive Indianapolis could be in 2019, but back-up-turned-starter Jacoby Brissett has impressed for the most part with his newfound opportunity.

The fourth-year quarterback has thrown for 911 yards and 10 touchdowns so far on the season, which matches Chiefs’ signal caller Patrick Mahomes for the most scoring strikes in the league. Remarkably, Brissett’s scoring production and passer rating (102.1) are both higher than Luck posted through the first four games of any season since 2015. Furthermore, the 26-year-old Brissett is the only player in the NFL to toss multiple touchdowns in every game this year.

Luck’s retirement was undoubtedly a shock, but Brissett can play.

“He can make all the throws and he can scramble,” said Chiefs’ cornerback Bashaud Breeland. “He came in and he’s been doing exactly what they needed him to do. He takes care of the ball and he puts his team in a good position to make plays. He’s just being the quarterback he needed to be with the situation that they’re going through.”

One of the key factors behind that success is the collective play of Indianapolis’ offensive line, which is certainly one of the better groups in the league. In fact, left tackle Anthony Castonzo and left guard Quenton Nelson have yielded just two quarterback hurries combined this season.

Brissett’s top option through the air is T.Y. Hilton, who leads the Colts in virtually every receiving category with 20 catches for 195 yards and four touchdowns despite missing last week’s loss to Oakland due to a quad injury. In fact, that same injury limited Hilton in practice this week and has him listed as questionable heading into Sunday’s matchup.

Indianapolis is simply a different team with Hilton on the field, so his availability will be something to keep an eye on prior to kickoff.

Tailback Marlon Mack, meanwhile, leads a Colts’ rushing attack that has racked up the sixth-most yards (530) in the NFL. It’s worth mentioning, however, that 70 percent of that production was tallied in the first two weeks as Indianapolis has managed less than 85 yards in each of their last two games.

Mack is also listed as questionable on a crowded Colts’ injury report, making the inactives meeting that takes place 90 minutes prior to the game all the more interesting.

Speaking of game-time decisions, the Chiefs may be receiving some reinforcements on Sunday.

Tailback Damien Williams (knee) and cornerback Morris Claiborne (suspension) both returned to practice this week, but their respective availabilities are all still up in the air. Williams has missed each of the Chiefs’ last two games while wide receiver Tyreek Hill, who also returned to practice this week but is already ruled out for Sunday, has missed the last three.

But as impactful as those players are, others have certainly stepped up in their stead.

The Chiefs are one of only three teams in the NFL to feature four or more players with 150+ yards receiving, and out of the backfield, veteran running back LeSean McCoy has averaged 7.0 yards-per-touch over Kansas City’s last two games.

“It shows the guys are ready. The guys that aren’t necessarily the starters are ready when their numbers are called, and it helps tremendously with the depth that we have with this team,” Mahomes said. “We can just shuffle guys in and pick up where the last guy left off. Whenever teams try to take away certain guys from us, we’re able to trust other guys to make plays, and that will help us out in the long run.”

That trust was on full display last week when Mahomes led the Chiefs on a 13-play, 79-yard scoring drive to take the lead in Detroit with just 20 seconds left in regulation. The game-winning series included a critical fourth down play that Mahomes picked up with his legs, but as impressive as the play – and the drive overall – was, it was the 24-year-old signal caller’s leadership that stood out amongst his teammates.

“It was fourth down, but he just looked at us with a smile on his face and it was time to roll,” said guard Laurent Duvernay-Tardif. “It was an example of great leadership and you want to play for a guy like that.”

Mahomes and company will face a Colts’ defense that has allowed at least 24 points in three of Indianapolis’ four contests but still includes some playmakers such as former Chiefs’ defensive end Justin Houston, who leads the Colts with 14 pressures, but will be without All-Pro linebacker Darius Leonard and safety Malik Hooker.

Those are some major losses in the second and third level of the Colts’ defense, and regardless of who steps in to take their place, one thing the Chiefs can count on is the support of the crowd. Mahomes is 9-2 in his career at Arrowhead Stadium (including the playoffs), leading Kansas City to 32.2 points-per-game in those contests.

Chiefs-Colts Preview

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The primetime showdown Sunday between the Indianapolis Colts and Kansas City Chiefs was supposed to be a matchup of Super Bowl contenders with young quarterbacks poised to begin a rivalry that could stretch the next decade or more.

Then the Colts’ Andrew Luck announced his stunning retirement and all bets were off.

But the most curious of things has happened through the first four weeks of the season: Jacoby Brissett has not only filled in quite admirably for the departed Luck, he has thrived under Colts coach Frank Reich to the point that he, too, is considered a potential star going forward.

Suddenly, that matchup of Super Bowl contenders is back on. And so is that matchup between young quarterbacks, only with Brissett going head-to-head with reigning league MVP Patrick Mahomes.

“Jacoby has really been sharp, really No. 1 just from a perspective of competitiveness and poise, and I think he’s passing his first test here with flying colors,” Reich said. “Nothing is too big for him. He seems the most poised in the biggest moments. Physically, he’s showing his accuracy is very good and his ability to extend plays is very good. And mentally he’s handling our offense.”

Just so happens that those traits are what have made Mahomes special, too.

Brissett has thrown for more than 900 yards with 10 touchdowns and two picks, helping the Colts (2-2) off to a solid start. But there is still a yawning gap from Brissett to Mahomes, who has thrown for 1,510 yards with 10 touchdowns and no picks in helping Kansas City start 4-0.

“It’s honestly just, play our game. You can’t get into the game where you’re playing offense versus offense or defense versus defense, things like that,” Brissett said. “Just go out there and play football. You put your best foot forward.”

The Colts struggled to do that the previous time they visited Arrowhead Stadium.

Indianapolis rolled into town in January for a divisional playoff matchup, and the Chiefs rolled to a 24-7 halftime lead. Mahomes wound up throwing for nearly 300 yards, the Chiefs held Luck to a tick over 200 yards passing, and Kansas City won 31-13 — its first home playoff win in 25 years.

“Any time you get to play at Arrowhead Stadium it’s exciting,” Mahomes said, “but from the experience I got the last few years from primetime games, how the fans show up and they’re loud, it’s going to be an awesome feeling out there.”

As the Chiefs prepare for just their second home game of the season, and the first of three primetime games in a four-week stretch, here are some things to know:

SAFETY DANCE

Indianapolis safety Malik Hooker tore the meniscus in his knee two weeks ago and the other starter, Clayton Geathers, was diagnosed with a concussion following last week’s loss to Oakland.

So, the Colts have spent this week putting together backup plans. Khari Willis replaced Hooker in the lineup last week while George Odum and Rolan Milligan are next on the depth chart, though the Colts have toyed with using cornerback Quincy Wilson at safety.

“He’s played multiple spots for us,” defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus said. “He’s played in the dime package over certain guys and played in our pressure packages at times. We’re going to look at him there. He’s certainly an option.”

KEEPING TABS

Brissett and Mahomes are tied for the league lead in touchdown pass, and some are already making comparisons. But if Brissett gets the chance Sunday, he may sneak a peek or two at reigning MVP.

“It’s kind of cool to see some of the stuff he does,” Brissett said. “Hopefully he doesn’t do it this week, but the things he can do with the ball, it’s very impressive. You just watch and you are like, `Yeah, I can’t do that. But it’s fun to see somebody else do that.”

HOUSTON LANDS

Colts defensive end Justin Houston spent his first eight NFL seasons with the Chiefs, setting all kinds of records. On Sunday, he’ll be using the visiting locker room for the first time.

General manager Chris Ballard, who got to know Houston during his tenure in Kansas City, jumped at the chance to sign the 2014 league sacks champion in hopes of helping the pass rush. He has been productive, recording 11 tackles, three quarterback hits, one sack and recovering one fumble.

“We know certain things to take him out of the game because we’ve gone up against him here in practice,” Chiefs offensive guard Andrew Wylie said. “Our tackles are really cued into his strengths.”

SPEAKING OF BALLARD

Chiefs coach Andy Reid heaped praise on Ballard, a longtime friend, for constructing a roster in Indianapolis that could deal with Luck’s retirement so close to the start of the season.

“They’ve got good leadership with Chris, obviously, and in their front office,” Reid said. “They have a quarterback with over a 100 rating. He’s doing a heck of a job. We liked him coming out. He did well in New England. They’re all doing well over there.”

MO HELP

Veteran cornerback Morris Claiborne is expected on the field for the Chiefs for the first time this season after serving a four-game ban for violating the NFL’s substance-abuse policy. Claiborne is coming off a productive two-year run with the New York Jets, and he is expected to eventually take over the starting cornerback job opposite Bashaud Breeland in the Chiefs’ base defense.

“He has a lot to bring to this team,” Breeland said. “We’re all excited to get him out there.”

INDIANAPOLIS — The Indianapolis Colts have one more game before their bye week, and it’s a big one.

In Week 5, the Colts (2-2) have a nationally-televised rematch of last season’s Divisional Round playoff loss as they take on the Kansas City Chiefs (4-0) at Arrowhead Stadium on Sunday Night Football.

The Colts look to rebound after falling short of victory last week at home, while also making a statement against one of the league’s best teams in the process. It also wouldn’t hurt to get a little payback for the Chiefs booting the Colts out of the playoffs last season.

Here’s everything you need to know heading into this primetime showdown.

Colts lead, 12-9 (4-1 in the playoffs). The Chiefs have won the last two games dating back to 2016.

STORYLINES/THINGS TO WATCH

The Toll Of Injuries — As you can see, there are a handful of very important players on the Colts’ injury report this week. It’s never good to go into this type of matchup while not at full strength, but that’s the nature of the NFL. With the bye being next week, will there be anyone who the Colts keep out of this matchup so they can gain an extra week of rest?

Defending The Run — The Colts are currently 25th against the run and have given up some gashing plays to opposing running backs. The Chiefs have a talented group of tailbacks led by LeSean McCoy and Damien Williams who are more than capable of making big plays. The Colts were mostly outstanding against the run last year, so we’ll see if this is the week they begin to settle in and improve. “When you look at run defense it’s all about gap control. It’s all about gap control,” head coach Frank Reich said this week. “So you’ve just got to be disciplined in that and you’ve got to play your technique and assignment right. You look at it with a very critical eye – like most times it’s one guy here, one guy there. It’s usually never the same guy. It’s a collective whole. So that’s why it’s a great team game and we’ve got to tighten up and I am confident we will. It wasn’t always clean last year, but we found a way I think to get better as the year went on in all phases and I am confident we are going to continue to do that this year.”

Getting A Pass Rush — Like stopping the run, the Colts’ pass rush has tailed off in recent weeks, coming away with just one sack in the last two games. They’ve gotten some pressure on quarterbacks but haven’t been able to bring them down. If the Colts have any hope of holding Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes in check then they’ll need to make sure they rattle his cage a little bit with their pass rush.

Bouncing Back — The Colts were gaining momentum going into last week’s game, winning two games in a row before some self-inflicted wounds led to a loss at home against the Oakland Raiders. Can they clean up the errors and leave Arrowhead with a huge underdog win?

Redemption — As previously mentioned, the Colts were sent home by the Chiefs in last year’s playoffs, and that’s sure to be in the minds of many Colts players in this matchup. A win by the Colts here would also put them back over .500 and would go a long way toward building an entertaining rivalry in the AFC.

The Next Chapter In A New Rivalry? — Continuing on the last point, 10 years from now, we could look back at this game as a memorable piece in a long rivalry similar to what the Colts shared with the New England Patriots in the 2000s. Both Jacoby Brissett and Mahomes are young quarterbacks who are just scratching the surface of what they’re capable of and could be leading these squads for years to come.

INTRIGUING MATCHUPS

Colts RB Nyheim Hines/TE Eric Ebron vs. Chiefs S Tyrann Mathieu — When Mathieu was a member of the division-rival Houston Texans in 2018, both Hines and Ebron had their successes against him in the passing game, scoring a few touchdowns with him in coverage. Mathieu is one of the league’s top defensive backs, but if the Colts know a way to exploit the field in his area, then they’ll take advantage of it.

Colts LT Anthony Castonzo vs. Chiefs DE Frank Clark — The Chiefs did part ways with current Colts defensive end Justin Houston and Dee Ford this offseason, but acquiring Clark from the Seattle Seahawks was a big deal. He may be a 10-plus sack defender, so Castonzo will have his hands full, but the Colts are fortunate to have a left tackle who can handle those duties. Castonzo was recently named to Pro Football Focus’ “First-Quarter NFL All-Pro Team.”

Colts DE Justin Houston vs. Chiefs OTs — There’s probably no tackle that Houston knows better in this league than Chiefs left tackle Eric Fisher, and vice versa. However, Fisher has been on the shelf all week with a groin injury and has been declared out of this matchup. Cam Erving is expected to start in his place. Chiefs head coach Andy Reid is very familiar with the challenges his offensive linemen will face in Houston: “He’s one of the best players I’ve ever had an opportunity to coach and he’s a great guy,” Reid told Indianapolis-area media this week in a conference call. “He was one of my leaders here and he was a leader here before I got here. It’ll be different. I’ve been watching tape on him, so it’s different seeing him in that uniform, but it’s the same player. He plays his heart out and he’s a tough kid. Great player though.”

Colts HC Frank Reich vs. Chiefs HC Andy Reid — One of the most intriguing battles in this one won’t take place on the field, rather it will be on the sidelines between the two head coaches. While both Reich and Reid are their respective teams’ offensive playcallers, this will be a football nerd’s dream to watch the things these two cook up on offense.

NOTES AND QUOTES

Colts running back Marlon Mack needs one 100-yard rushing game to tie Curtis Dickey, Randy McMillan and Lenny Moore (six) for the seventh-most such games in franchise history.

Hines needs five receptions to pass Joseph Addai (81) for the third-most receptions by a Colts running back in their first two seasons in the NFL.

Colts wide receiver T.Y. Hilton needs two touchdowns to pass Dallas Clark (46) for the 11th-most total touchdowns in franchise history, and would also tie Clark for the sixth-most receiving touchdowns in franchise history.

Colts kicker Adam Vinatieri needs one game played to pass Rohn Stark and Jeff Saturday (197) and tie Eugene Daniel (198) for the fourth-most games played in Colts history.

Reich on moving past last year’s Divisional Round playoff loss versus taking things away from it: “I think it’s both. In one respect we are moving past – new team (on) both sides of the ball. But you do learn from it. We have gone back and looked at it. There is a fair amount of turnover on personnel in some areas, but you still can learn a lot from it.”

Reich on how tough it is to face a guy like Mahomes: “He’s a unique talent. He’s fun to watch – I’m not going to lie. Last week when we were playing the Raiders, I was watching a lot of Kansas City’s offense against them and he made a couple throws that you just shake your head and you say, ‘How do you do that?’ So we respect that and like I’ve said before to you guys, I also respect who he is off the field. I think it’s just great for the league when you’ve got players that are that good but also are really pros on and off the field. But make no mistake, everybody can be beat in this league. Everybody can be beat – I don’t care how good you are. He’s great, but this is a team game and it’s going to require our best team effort to beat these guys.”

Reid on Brissett: “I’m a big fan. I think he’s a heck of a player. I love the way he handles himself and the offense. He’s well-coached to. He’s got a good head coach there and good coordinators. He’s in a good situation there.”

The Colts made the following roster moves this week: signed defensive tackle Trevon Coley to the 53-man roster from the Baltimore Ravens’ practice squad signed, waived defensive tackle Jihad Ward, signed wide receiver Marcus Johnson and cornerback Shakial Taylor to the practice squad, and released cornerback Jalen Collins and defensive tackle Brian Price from the practice squad.
