Chiefs 30.6
Texans 20.8Notable Quotables:
Chiefs:“I know everybody is looking for a specific reason [for the Chiefs continued problems in stopping the run]. There is no specific reason. If there’s 20 plays in there that cause issues on over four- or five-yard runs, there may be 20 different reasons. So you just keep playing but you do all the things you talk about. You get off blocks, you make tackles and you get to the football. That’s what you do.”
–Chiefs Defensive Coordinator Steve Spagnuolo
Texans:
“We knew what we had to do, especially offensively. We had to go in and execute, bring the energy, play fast, do what we do and make sure that every time we touch the ball, we try to end with points. The great ones can do those things consistently and that’s what we are”
–Texans Quarterback Deshaun Watson

as Patrick Mahomes and

Mahomes is dinged some with

[/TABLE]It’s the kind of showdown that simply doesn’t happen very often in the regular season.
Two of the best young quarterbacks in the National Football League, who are each off to masterful starts this year, sharing the field in a matchup between division leaders.
That’s the situation on Sunday afternoon as the Kansas City Chiefs, led by reigning MVP Patrick Mahomes, take on quarterback Deshaun Watson and the Houston Texans at Arrowhead Stadium.
Both players have set the football-watching world ablaze after entering the league just two selections apart in the 2017 NFL Draft, and for the first time as professionals, they’re finally set to meet this weekend.
The two signal callers have combined for 22 touchdowns and just one interception on the campaign, with each compiling a passer rating north of 114.0. Mahomes leads the league with 1,831 passing yards through just five games while Watson is coming off a five-touchdown performance in the Texans’ victory over Atlanta last week.
The matchup represents a bounce-back opportunity for the Chiefs, who dropped their first game of the season last Sunday against the Indianapolis Colts. It marked the first time in Mahomes’ career that Kansas City didn’t score at least 26 points, but despite the loss, the Chiefs aren’t wavering.
“You have to be prepared as a team about [defenses] coming out playing man [coverage], pressing it up and trying to be physical with you,” Mahomes said. “Obviously, we’re going to prepare for that because the last two teams we played [defended us that way], but we also have to prepare for zone coverages and stuff like that. I think just having the mentality that you could get that physical-type game and you have to find a way to get yourself open and be on time with the football is something that we’re going to focus on all week.”

Of course, the Texans have a dynamic pass-catcher of their own in veteran wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins. One of the top receivers in the NFL, Hopkins is off to another strong start this season with 31 catches for 347 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
Fellow wide receiver Will Fuller, meanwhile, leads the Texans in receiving yards (400) and touchdown catches (3) after hauling in 14 grabs for 217 yards and three scores last week against Atlanta. The Texans also feature wide receiver Kenny Stills, who they acquired in August from the Miami Dolphins following three-straight seasons with six or more touchdowns. Stills has 11 catches for 188 yards and a touchdown this season but missed last week’s game due to a hamstring injury and is listed as questionable heading into Sunday, making his status something to watch.
Though even without Stills, Houston possesses one of the better pass-catching arsenals in the league.
“They have options all over the field which presents a challenge, so we have to do a good job of keeping [Watson] in the pocket, we have to play physical, press-man and compete with those guys through the ground, especially Hopkins,” said safety Tyrann Mathieu. “He’s going to be in a position to catch most balls, so the attitude that we need to have it to take him to the ground with the ball and finish every play.”
The Texans have some weapons on the ground as well as tailback Carlos Hyde – who spent all of training camp with the Chiefs before being traded to Houston prior to the season – leads the rushing attack with 310 yards and two scores while fellow tailback Duke Johnson is averaging 6.4 yards-per-attempt through 32 carries.
It all starts with Watson, however, and despite his stellar season so far, the Texans have struggled to protect their star quarterback for much of the year. Houston didn’t yield a sack last week, but in the four weeks prior, the opposition sacked Watson 18 times – tied for the third-most in the NFL.
The Chiefs will be without defensive tackle Chris Jones on Sunday as he deals with a groin injury, but defensive ends Frank Clark, Alex Okafor, Emmanuel Ogbah and the rest of Kansas City’s defense will look to replicate that trend when Watson takes the field at Arrowhead.
It all wraps up into a contest that has all the makings of a classic matchup between two of the best young quarterbacks in the sport today, and while things didn’t go the way the Chiefs wanted a week ago, there’s no better time to turn the page.
“You have to have confidence in this league. You have to have the confidence that you are going to go out there and have success every single week,” Mahomes said. “We know we’re playing a very good defense with a very good defensive line [that’s part of] a very good team in general with a good game plan. For us, we’re just going to have the confidence to do what we do and find a way to win the football game in the end.”

Chiefs-Texans Preview
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The relationship between Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes and Texans counterpart Deshaun Watson goes back well beyond the 2017 draft, when along with Mitchell Trubisky they were considered among the best prospects at their position.
It goes back to their college days, when Mahomes was orchestrating the “Air Raid” offense at Texas Tech and Watson was trying to navigate Clemson to a national championship.
“I think we were going into our junior year,” Mahomes recalled, “and we went to a QB camp out in California. I talked to him, back and forth, about how he did his stuff at Clemson, how I did my stuff at Texas Tech. He’s a great player. We kind of hit it off.”
They stayed in touch during the draft process, too.
“We took a lot of the same visits,” Mahomes said, “and we went to the same places, and we would talk to each other about what we went through. But we didn’t necessarily knew where we would go.”
Nobody did.
Trubisky wound up going second overall to Chicago. And when nobody grabbed a quarterback in the next eight picks, the Chiefs traded up to No. 10 and chose Mahomes over Watson as the heir apparent to Alex Smith. Watson wound up going two picks later to the Texans.
All three quarterbacks have flourished to some extent. On Sunday, two of them will get to square off when Mahomes leads the Chiefs (4-1) against Watson and the Texans (3-2) at Arrowhead Stadium.
“He’s been doing a heck of a job putting the Chiefs in contention each and every game, and putting up a lot of great numbers,” Watson said, “because that’s what he’s been doing his whole career, and just being that leader — he’s doing a heck of a job for that organization.”
Yes, it was Mahomes who rewrote the record books during his MVP season a year ago, and he is off to another blazing start this season. But it is Watson who comes into the AFC showdown with the hot hand, having thrown for 426 yards and five touchdowns while running for 47 yards last week against Atlanta.
“He’s a heck of a player. We had him in here before the draft,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said. “We thought the world of him. I know he was a heck of a player in college and he carried it over and he’s playing really good football. I don’t know exactly what they’re asking and not asking him to do, but whatever they’re asking him to do, he’s doing it well.”
The matchup Sunday is more than just Mahomes vs. Watson, though. Here are some other story lines:
INJURY BUG
The Chiefs hope to get wide receiver Tyreek Hill on the field for the first time since breaking his collarbone Week 1 in Jacksonville. But they are poised to play without several key players, such as wide receiver Sammy Watkins (hamstring), defensive tackle Chris Jones (groin) and left guard Andrew Wylie (ankle).
INJURY BUG, PART II
Texans wide receiver Kenny Still is still recovering from a hamstring injury, though it appears his bothersome ankle is finally better. Elsewhere, interior offensive lineman Greg Mancz has been out with a concussion and running back Taiwan Jones has been slowed by a hip injury.
MANO-A-MANO
The Colts slowed down the Chiefs by playing a bunch of man-to-man defense, and the Texans are likely to follow the same blueprint. But the Chiefs also have spent the week trying to fix their issues from last week, resulting in an intriguing offense-defense chess match Sunday.
“They obviously played a great game,” Texans defensive end J.J. Watt said of the Colts. “They went in there and stuck to their game plan and executed very well and came out with the win.”
BEWARE THE HONEY BADGER
Tyrann Mathieu picked off his first pass as a member of the Chiefs last week, and he’d like nothing more than to get his second against the Texans. Mathieu had a big year with Houston last season, and the club wanted to keep him around, only to see the Chiefs win the bidding in free agency.
12 ANGRY MEN
One of the most effective personnel groups for Houston this season has been “12 personnel,” which means a set with one running back and two tight ends. But why has it worked so well?
“It’s a good question,” Texans coach Bill O’Brien said. “It has a lot to do with what you’re going to see defensively. We’ve got a lot of different combinations of personnel groupings we can use and we try to study and we try to think about, defensively, how they’re going to attack it. `What personnel are they going to use? What’s going to be their scheme, and how does that fit what we want to do?’ … And sometimes it works. Hopefully it works more than it doesn’t.”

The Texans (3-2) travel to Kansas City (4-1) for a Week 6 matchup. Here are five things to watch when the two squads square off at noon CT inside Arrowhead Stadium. First Glance is presented by First Community Credit Union.
1) Watson rewind? – Deshaun Watson and the offense erupted for scores on eight of their 10 possessions last Sunday, with touchdowns coming on six of those drives. He tossed for five of those scores, and now has 11 touchdown passes in 2019, with a lone interception.
Houston’s played on the road twice through the first five this season, winning once and losing once, and scoring a combined 55 points. More of the same will likely be needed against a Chiefs’ offense that’s put up 29.6 per game in 2019.
Kansas City head coach Andy Reid is impressed with Watson’s pocket presence, as well as what he can do when he uses his legs.
“He can do that, so if things break down, he can still make things happen,” Reid said. “At the same time, when he’s in the pocket he makes things happen, and their offensive line has done a nice job for him.”
Watson wasn’t sacked against Atlanta, and he was hit just once. Staying clean was a key reason he and the offense were so successful, and they’ll look to continue that against the Chiefs.
“For every quarterback, if you don’t get touched while you’re throwing the ball, you have time, then you can make a lot of plays, especially nowadays with the rules – the DBs can’t touch you after five yards and you can’t really guard for six seconds,” Watson said. “So if you have time in the pocket and you’re not getting pressured like that, of course you can sit back there and kind of throw the ball around and have success.”
2) Pick your poison – Watson can throw to the best receiver in the game in All-Pro DeAndre Hopkins. He can go to Will Fuller V, who exploded for 14 catches, 217 yards and three scores against Atlanta. Keke Coutee needed just three catches to pick up 72 yards last Sunday. Darren Fells caught a pair of touchdowns in that win. Jordan Akins caught two scores at Los Angeles.
There are many reliable, explosive pass-catchers on the Texans offense. Receiver Kenny Stills might play, but will be a gametime decision because of injury. Fuller described the mindset of the receiving corps.
“We feel like our receivers — me, Kenny, Hop and Keke – we can take over a game at any point,” Fuller said.
Hopkins typically draws the most attention in coverage, as he did last week. He still managed to catch seven passes for 88 yards in the win, despite routinely having two or more defenders assigned to him.
“Not a lot of people are going to go out there and just line up in man against me, unless they really believe in them,” Hopkins explained. “But that’s why we’ve got guys like Will, tight ends and running backs to go out there and step up when there are two of three guys on me.”
Keep an eye on how the Chiefs’ secondary tries to account for Hopkins and company.
3) Ground goals – Through five games, the Texans ground game has been excellent. On the whole, the offense is good for 5.1 yards per carry. Running backs Carlos Hyde and Duke Johnson have combined to average 4.9 yards per carry.
Houston won’t force the run. But being able to pick up chunks of yardage on the ground will go a long way toward keeping the Chiefs honest on defense. Hyde, in particular, drew the praise of Kansas City’s defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo this week.
“I see a player that really fits the system and what they’re doing down there, and he’s doing a really good job at it,” Spagnuolo said.
Houston picked up 166 yards on the ground last week and, on average, they’ve gained 129.4 yards per contest.
4) Pester Patrick – Patrick Mahomes is the reigning NFL MVP. He’s tossed 11 touchdowns this season and hasn’t been picked off. The Colts defense limited him and Kansas City to just 13 points in last Sunday’s loss. In 21 career regular season games before that, the lowest point total for the Chiefs had been 26, and they averaged 34.6 points per game in that span.
Defensive end J.J. Watt, who has a combined four sacks and 12 quarterback hits in the last three games, said the Texans need to put pressure on Mahomes. But that’s not an easy task.
“He obviously does a great job handling that, moving around, throwing on the run,” Watt said. “I don’t have to worry about where the ball is going once it’s thrown. It’s just trying to get to the quarterback. I mean, at the end of the day that’s our job and we’re going to have to do a good job of that.”
Mahomes was sacked four times by Indianapolis. In the four games prior this season, he was dropped a combined three times. Whether the front seven can get to him or not, veteran cornerback Johnathan Joseph explained what he and the rest of the secondary have to do in coverage.
“Just stay with your man, stay the course,” Joseph said. “You don’t know if the play’s going to be three or four seconds, or eight or nine seconds, because he has the capability to run back there and extend plays. He can make any throw on the field at any given time, no matter where he is.”
5) Safety first – When the Texans signed safety Tashaun Gipson this offseason, many pointed to his successes in defending against tight ends. Gipson will get a mighty test this Sunday in Travis Kelce. Twice an All-Pro, Kelce’s finished with over 1,000 receiving yards in each of the last three seasons, and he’s caught a combined 22 touchdowns in that span.
“Best tight end in the National Football League, in my opinion,” Gipson said of Kelce. He also lumped Philadelphia’s Zac Ertz in there as well.
“Played him last year. Those two are my tougher challenges. Always look forward to these types of matchups. He’s a familiar foe, obviously. We’ll see how Sunday turns out.”
In three regular season contests and one playoff game against Houston, Kelce’s averaged about seven catches for 92 yards.
“Kelce is a tremendous athlete,” defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel said. “He’s got length, he’s got size, he’s got toughness, he can run. He poses matchup problems, and if you’ve got a guy that you can put on him that can slow him down a little bit, that helps the defensive scheme. Gipson having played him before, I think that will benefit us a little bit when he’s on him.”
Gipson will likely be helped by his fellow safeties, the corners, and linebacker Zach Cunningham.
