The date was January 15, 1967.

It was Super Bowl I, and for the very first time, representatives from the AFL – the Kansas City Chiefs – and NFL – the Green Bay Packers – were set to clash against one another.

The Chiefs ultimately lost that game, but the framework was laid for what the National Football League is today. The two leagues merged a few years later, and the rest is history.

Remarkably, the Chiefs and Packers have met just 11 times since that matchup fifty-two years ago, and only four times since the turn of the millennium. That includes Kansas City’s unforgettable 17-point comeback at Lambeau Field back in 2003 and the Chiefs’ upset of the previously unbeaten Packers late in the 2011 campaign at Arrowhead, making for some instant classics in the all-time series despite only playing every so often.

And, as the Chiefs and Packers take the field this Sunday night, the stage will be set for yet another matchup between the two iconic franchises on the Arrowhead grass.

The contest will not feature quarterback Patrick Mahomes, however, as the reigning NFL MVP recovers from a knee injury that he suffered in last week’s victory over Denver. Mahomes participated in practice this week on a limited basis, but Chiefs’ Head Coach Andy Reid ultimately decided to rule out Kansas City’s 24-year-old quarterback for the game on Friday afternoon.

“He just wasn’t ready right now,” Reid said. “That was our decision, not his. He wanted to play right after it happened, but he needs a little bit of time there.”

The Chiefs will turn to veteran quarterback Matt Moore in the meantime, who performed admirably during his three quarters of work last week following the injury to Mahomes. Moore completed 10-of-19 passes for 117 yards and a touchdown in the game, and while stepping in for a player of Mahomes’ caliber is far from easy, the 11-year-veteran handled it with poise.

“You realize quickly that it’s time to go, there are people relying on you and you have a job to do. That all kind of hit me pretty quick,” Moore said. “I went in the huddle and got some inspiration from the guys, which was good stuff. That’s a great part of the game and we just went [from there]. I told them let’s work together…and that’s what we did.”

It’s worth remembering that Kansas City was only up by a single score when Moore first took over, and alongside a tenacious effort from the defense, the 35-year-old Moore came in and led the Chiefs to a 24-point victory.

Moore will now be relied upon once again on Sunday, and just like last week, the coaching staff is confident that he can put the Chiefs in a position to succeed.

“Matt’s been around for a long time. He’s been there done that. He’s played from a starter’s perspective and from a backup’s perspective. The kid is very sharp,” said Offensive Coordinator Eric Bieniemy. “He has a way of commanding the offense and I know he’s excited about the opportunity that’s been presented to him.”

Fortunately, Moore will have a major reinforcement available at his disposal on Sunday in wide receiver Sammy Watkins, who missed the last two weeks with a hamstring injury but is set to return against Green Bay.

Watkins joins fellow wide receiver Tyreek Hill – who hauled in a 57-yard touchdown from Moore last week – tight end Travis Kelce and the rest of the offense to round out the Chiefs’ electric group of pass-catchers, but in order to get the ball to his playmakers, Moore will need to avoid one of the better pass-rushing duos in the NFL.

With 13.0 sacks and 24 quarterback hits between them, the tandem of linebackers Preston Smith and Za’Darius Smith are as menacing a group as ever, combining to form the only pair of teammates in the league with six or more sacks.

And while the bulk of the damage comes from those two, the Packers try and bring pressure from just about everywhere in order to slow down the opposition.

“They have a good combination of scheme and talent,” said offensive tackle Mitchell Schwartz. “They can bring anybody from any spot at any time. There’s a lot of flexibility there in terms of dialing up the pressure. It can be a corner, a safety, a nickel and a defensive end. Most teams would just rush the four guys that get paid to get after the passer, but for them, it can be any four of the 11 guys out there. That’s what makes things difficult.”

It’s important to note that the Chiefs will be without offensive linemen Eric Fisher (groin) and Andrew Wylie (ankle) on Sunday, meaning the group that yielded just one sack last week against Denver will look to produce similar results against Green Bay’s impressive attack.

On the other side of the ball, the Chiefs will look to generate some pressure of their own against Packers’ quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

Green Bay piled up 42 points and nearly 500 total yards of offense in last week’s victory over the Oakland Raiders behind five touchdown passes from the 15-year veteran, who is in the midst of as strong a season as ever.

“He’s a heck of a player – a future Hall of Famer – and he’s playing at a very high level right now,” Reid said of Rodgers. “It looks like he has a good feel for their offense, the offensive line is playing well, and his receivers are doing a nice job for him. He has some good players around him and [their offense] is playing well.”

Indeed, Rodgers can still sling it.

Through seven games this year, the two-time NFL MVP has thrown for 2,019 yards and 13 touchdowns while posting a 103.7 passer rating. Rodgers’ 21 passes of 25+ yards rank second in the NFL to only Mahomes (23), and he’s only thrown two picks on the season to go along with his impressive numbers.

Stopping Rodgers is no simple task, but even though the Chiefs will be without defensive tackle Chris Jones (groin), defensive end Frank Clark (neck) and cornerback Kendall Fuller (thumb) due to various injuries on Sunday, those that will be taking the field are up for the challenge.

“We just have to play good defense. It sounds simple and cliché, but that’s what we have to do,” said linebacker Anthony Hitchens. “I played against Aaron Rodgers a lot of times when I was in Dallas and ended up on the bad side, so hopefully can get all 11 of our guys playing well and fast.”

Rodgers has thrived under first-year head coach Matt LaFleur, spreading the ball around to pass-catchers Marquez Valdes-Scantling (21 catches for 416 yards and 2 touchdowns), Jimmy Graham (18 catches for 214 yards and 3 touchdowns) and Geronimo Allison (17 catches for 177 yards and 2 touchdowns) among others.

That list doesn’t even include top target Davante Adams, who is listed as doubtful for Sunday’s game with a toe injury, but the Packers’ leader in receptions this season is actually tailback Aaron Jones, who’s hauled in 27 catches for 196 yards and a score.

Jones forms a dynamic backfield alongside fellow tailback Jamaal Williams, tallying 904 yards from scrimmage and 12 touchdowns this season between the two of them.

Kansas City held Broncos’ running backs Phillip Lindsay and Royce Freeman to just 71 yards on the ground last week, and if the Chiefs are to come out with a victory on Sunday, slowing down Jones and Williams will likely be critical.

It all makes for an interesting matchup on Sunday night as the Chiefs, though missing their All-Pro quarterback and some other significant contributors, aim to win their second-straight.

Chiefs-Packers Preview

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — It was supposed to be a Sunday night celebration of two of the NFL’s storied franchises, the Green Bay Packers and Kansas City Chiefs, teams that played in the first Super Bowl and each led these days by transcendent quarterbacks.

That last part was thrown for a loop last week. Everything else remains the same.

The Packers (6-1), fresh off their blowout of the Raiders and with Aaron Rodgers seemingly hitting his stride, are still headed to Arrowhead Stadium for a showdown of division leaders. But his opposing quarterback will be journeyman Matt Moore — not Patrick Mahomes — after the league’s MVP dislocated his kneecap in the Chiefs’ road win over the Broncos.

“I love putting on the film and watching him and his arm angles and throwing ability and eye manipulation,” said Rodgers, who got to know Mahomes while they starred together in State Farm Insurance commercials. “He’s an extreme talent in the league and the league’s obviously better when he’s playing.”

The Chiefs (5-2) insisted that was a possibility until finally ruling him out Friday.

Mahomes couldn’t stand when he hurt his knee while sneaking for a first down in Denver. The kneecap was jerked back into place while he was still on the field, and he appeared to be walking better as he returned to the locker room. X-rays and an MRI exam showed no damage to any ligaments, and Mahomes spent the long weekend off with the training staff at the team’s facility.

When practice rolled around Wednesday, he was throwing passes alongside Moore in the portion open to reporters. But only the Chiefs knew for sure how much work he did the rest of the day, and it became clear by the end of the week that Mahomes would need at least one game off.

It’s not as if Moore doesn’t have experience in this precarious situation. He started dozens of games for Carolina and Miami, and he has plenty of experience preparing as a backup quarterback.

He was solid if unspectacular in the second half against Denver, and that may be all the Chiefs need him to be. He threw a long touchdown pass to Tyreek Hill, made no major mistakes and, perhaps most importantly, rallied the Chiefs around him when their best player limped off the field.

“Watching Pat, it’s easy to want to play like him, which I can’t,” Moore said. “You have to adapt to the offense, I think, and you have to adapt to the guys around you. Some things are being taught maybe different than you’ve had them in the past and so, yeah, we’re adapting every day.”

As the NFC North-leading Packers and AFC West-leading Chiefs prepare to meet, with much of the focus still on the quarterbacks, here are some other things to watch:

MORE MED CHECKS

The Chiefs also will be without defensive end Frank Clark because of a neck injury. Left tackle Eric Fisher (groin), left guard Andrew Wylie (ankle), defensive tackle Chris Jones (groin) and cornerback Kendall Fuller (thumb) also remain out. Wide receiver Sammy Watkins (hamstring) is expected to play.

TOE TROUBLE

On the other sideline, the Packers still hope wide receiver Davante Adams will return this week. He’s been out the past three weeks, sending Green Bay scrambling for reinforcements.

“I think it could go right up to game time, to be truthful,” Packers coach Matt LaFleur said. “I’m not quite sure where we’re at right there with him right now.”

GETTING DEFENSIVE

The Chiefs are coming off their best defensive performance of the season in Denver, holding the Broncos to just 205 yards. It came after a series of games in which Kansas City coughed up so many yards that new coordinator Steve Spagnuolo already was coming under fire.

“We’ve been making strides,” Chiefs safety Tyrann Mathieu said. “I thought the Thursday game we kind of put it all together, from the front end to the back end. Guys playing together. Guys trusting their teammates. It allowed us to have some fun.”

SPECIAL TEAMS

The Chiefs cut wide receiver DeAnthony Thomas, a mainstay on several special teams units, so they could promote rookie quarterback Kyle Shurmur from the practice squad. They needed the insurance in case Mahomes couldn’t play, but it came at the expense of a dependable punt returner.

HISTORIC CLUBS

Perhaps nobody has more appreciation for the Packers and Chiefs than Andy Reid, who cut his teeth as an assistant in Green Bay and is now the coach in Kansas City. Reid also spent many years as the coach in Philadelphia, which means he has worked for three of the NFL’s tradition-rich franchises.

“The Packers are right there, close to the beginning, then the Chiefs with the whole start of the AFL. I think it’s great,” Reid said. “There are not a lot of people still alive that remember all of that, that were there. But the history of it and the way it’s maintained is a tribute to the families and all the people who have run the two organizations.”

GREEN BAY – Za’Darius Smith doesn’t need a reminder of how dangerous Patrick Mahomes can be. He still remembers what happened last December at Arrowhead Stadium.

With Baltimore leading Kansas City by seven points on fourth-and-9 with 1 minute, 29 seconds remaining, Smith appeared to be inches away from sacking Mahomes and clinching a 24-17 win for the streaking Ravens.

But as the eventual MVP quarterback does so often, Mahomes felt the pressure and began scrambling right to escape the pocket. For a fleeting moment, Smith looked to be within range of lunging at Mahomes but he didn’t immediately.

The slight hesitation allowed Mahomes to extend the play an extra second and fire a pass across his body to Tyreek Hill 40 yards downfield, bringing the ball to the Ravens’ 12-yard line.

Mahomes showed remarkable arm strength and vision on the play, causing color commentator Tony Romo to exclaim on the CBS broadcast: “I’m not sure anybody else – Aaron Rodgers maybe – in the National Football league can make this play.”

Kansas City tied the game to force overtime and prevailed 27-24, handing the Ravens their only loss during the final seven weeks of the 2018 regular season.

“It was going to end the game and he scrambled out of the pocket and I had a chance to dive for him and I didn’t,” said Smith, who had four tackles, three QB knockdowns and a half sack in the game. “That was one that I remember. If he does play this game, I know what I need to do in those situations.”

Now whether Smith gets his shot at redemption Sunday night remains anyone’s guess. Mahomes, now a week removed from dislocating his knee cap against Denver, practiced in a limited capacity on both Wednesday and Thursday.

Head coach Andy Reid has been ambiguous about Mahomes’ availability for Sunday, refusing to rule him out for the matchup with Green Bay. Still, Mahomes took the No. 2 reps behind veteran backup Matt Moore in Thursday’s practice.

Moore, 35, has thrown for 7,055 yards, 46 touchdowns and 36 interceptions in a 12-year NFL career spent mostly with Carolina and Miami. He spent last season out of football, but signed with Kansas City after backup Chad Henne was placed on injured reserve with an ankle injury.

Moore completed 10-of-19 passes for 117 yards in relief of Mahomes, including a 57-yard touchdown pass to Hill near the end of the third quarter.

“You have to give him his respect,” linebacker Preston Smith said. “He’s getting the job done and is able to make plays. They still have some weapons on this offense to make them be successful and allow him to be in the pocket and make plays in their system.”

While Mahomes has been at the controls of the NFL’s top-ranked passing offense that’s putting up 28.9 points per game this season, he’s not the only difference-maker the Packers’ defense must account for.

Hill has caught eight passes for 154 yards and three touchdowns since returning from a shoulder injury against Houston, while three-time All-Pro tight end Travis Kelce leads Kansas City in both catches (38) and receiving yards (541).

Meanwhile, receivers Sammy Watkins, Demarcus Robinson and rookie Mecole Hardman each have at least 300 receiving yards and three touchdowns through the first six games.

The ground game had been the one weak spot in Kansas City’s offense early on, but veteran LeSean McCoy (60 carries for 322 yards and two touchdowns) has shifted the tide since moving into the starting lineup in Week 3.

“They have more than just Tyreek Hill,” Head Coach Matt LaFleur said. “They have Sammy Watkins, Mecole Hardman, Travis Kelce. There’s a lot of speed on that field. There will be a lot of speed on that field Sunday night.”

The Packers are expecting Kansas City to be at its best in front of an energized crowd at Arrowhead Stadium. Green Bay’s defense, which had three red-zone stops this past Sunday against Oakland, vows to be ready regardless of who starts at quarterback.

Depending on how things unfolds, neither Za’Darius nor Preston Smith would be surprised if it’s Mahomes starting under center. At least, that’s the mentality they’re practicing with this week.

“It wouldn’t be shocking,” Za’Darius Smith said. “At the end of the day, it’s still football and we’re all football players. To be able to go out there and do what we love, I hope he can play. If he’s not, that’s just the name of the game.”

I don’t expect the Chiefs to win this game but I wouldn’t be surprised if they pull it off somehow. It’s in Arrowhead and the Chiefs are 7-3-1 vs the Packers all time. Of course that goes back 44 years. The offense will have to pressure Rodgers relentlessly and not give up the big pass play, of course, but the best defense is to keep Aaron off the field. Moore will have to be Alex Smith 2.0. Long sustained drives and short quick passes picking up 4 or 5 yards per down and eating up clock. Keep our defense on the sideline and rested, because they are going to have their hands full.

I’m prepared for the worst, but hoping for the best.
