To me this one wasn’t decided at the end it was decided at the beginning.
The Pats came out ready to play. They were ready for the offense they were ready for all the bags of tricks. They shut it down early. And they were ready to work the defense. They won this on the sidelines. And that is what makes it hurt even more.
Mahomes made a few costly mistakes. We could have had a TD on a drive that ended in a punt And we wouldn’t be heartbroken right now. That being said for a 1st-year starter he was amazing going head to head with Brady. He put up more of a fight then Rivers did that for sure. He will learn from this and now that he has this experience it will make him better.
I have ranted enough about Mr.Sutton I won’t tonight it’s Mr.Reid that is getting my wrath. First of all he’s the one that has kept Sutton around even when it has been clear he needs to go. And this team did not come out ready to play in an AFC championship game. The Pats were ready for everything in Reid’s bag of tricks. They were prepared and shut it down. Like I noted this game was lost on the sidelines. I said in the pregame that Andy was going to have to be on his A game and it wasn’t even close. Yes they made it a game and had a chance to win in the 2nd half. But if they started like they finished the Chiefs would be getting ready to make the trip to Atlanta instead of the trip home. This is on ANDY REID. And Andy Reid alone. Football is about coaching and he just got outcoached in a major way. A franchise QB is great to have and all. But if you don’t have the coach to go with that QB. He’s not going anywhere and I am yet again left thinking why should I think that it’s going to be any different next year.
This sucks. I’ll do a season thing tomorrow when it might not sting as bad. But this game was there for the taking and we lost it on the sidelines that’s just how I feel.
01/21/2019 at 5:50 am #1070950Agreed, Matt. This team was NOT prepared the way they should have been & that is clearly on the HC. They came out flat & there is no way that should have happened with what was at stake.
I’m going to say this & some people aren’t going to like it, but Eric Berry has got to go. It was said elsewhere that his return to the field for today’s game might be a detriment & I did notice that in all three games he played in, the Chiefs LOST. He did NOTHING to help the Chiefs get where they got to in 2018. I’m sorry, but Berry has been little more than a hero-worship icon from the time he was drafted & it was not surprising that Brady & Gronk went after him and had success at critical moments in the game. The Chiefs paid this guy 13+ million in 2018 & was essentially nothing but a big sandbag. He is washed up & has always struggled in pass-defense.
As for the other Eric — Eric Fisher — he has not made the progress that I had hoped to see since 2015. The Chiefs could consider trading him for a mid-round draft pick & move Wylie over to the LT spot, as Wylie was a Tackle in college. Fisher is not another Tony Boselli or Jon Ogden and his lanky frame often gets used against him. Wylie can probably play the LT position just as well as what Fisher has these past three seasons & it would save the Chiefs some cap space, plus they will have a healthy LDT to return to the RG position next year.
And one more thing — what player wasn’t on the field in today’s game that had provided big plays & gashed NE’s defense in the previous two meetings? That’s right — Kareem Hunt. His absence was most certainly felt today, as the Chiefs had no running game to speak of. I’m sorry, but Damien Williams is not as dynamic as Hunt was, nor as gifted a runner. Hunt had totaled 228 rushing yards in the two previous meeting with NE and averaged around 8 yards a carry. Williams only got 30 yards on 10 carries today. Hunt’s absence most certainly showed today & the Offense never really was the same following his departure.
As for Dee Ford, I can’t help but wonder if he’ll ever recover from what happened today & perhaps the Chiefs should just let him walk. His mistake cost them the game & you can’t make critical mistakes like that in a game of this magnitude. All he had to do was look at the football & line up appropriately & the INT would have stood and the Chiefs would have won the game.
As for Bob Sutton, he has to go, as he did not bring the pressure on Brady too many times on 3rd & long situations and Brady was able to just stand back there and throw darts.
As for the Defensive backfield, Berry, Nelson, and Scandrick have got to go and replacements need to be drafted or signed via FA.
Overall, this loss is going to sting & I’m not banking on the Chiefs recovering from it when next season rolls around. Nobody should be getting their hopes up for anything in 2019, but should just take a “wait and see” approach. And they do have to go up to NE to play the Pats next season, just in case anybody is wondering.
01/21/2019 at 6:40 am #1070952The 1st half of the game only possible explanation is they were in shock and didnt believe in themselves that they belonged in the game. If they played the way the played in the 2nd half they would have won easily. I think the 1st half came down to experience. Yes sutton gots to go but our oline couldnt block anyone the 1st half. Sutton made some adjustments but made them to late and also should have adjusted in overtime. Dee ford blew it but then again it should have never came down to that also that bs roughing the passer call but then again 1st half would have changed that.

The O-Line was indeed disappointing. They had played much better in the 1st game up at NE. They didn’t show up in the 1st half & the result was no points on scoreboard & it came back to bite them in arse.
They just weren’t ready & got outcoached.

I think out coached is the kicker. Why i always like Bill hes no nonsense and he demands you to be ready. Also i think a new D coordinator who can adjust in game will be huge. The announcers said that brady told them that they felt once the line uo they perty much know what they will get like the chiefs never try to disguise the looks or make an audibles. I dont know who woukd be a great D cord who still available and dont know if we eant to promote from within promoting the same type of thinkiing as sutton.
I think ward is a starter. Sorenson even made two great olays.
Sutton, scandrick, and nelson should be gone next year.
Draft needs is cb and safety and true MLB. Trade Berry if possible not qorth his contract. Need to resign others.
Of we dradt another olb this year il be pissed. I think speaks is a bust and he played ****ty today.
I cant think of any holes on offense just get them healthy. We really do have a good young nucleus.

I don’t think I would call Speaks a bust yet. Sutton didn’t do a good job this year and that hurt the d. Poor coaching game plans hurt a lot but they really hurt rookie players. Hopefully Sutton’s gone and Speaks is able to do more. I’ll at least give him a shot at it
01/21/2019 at 2:26 pm #1070960We didn’t show up ready to play a four quarter ball game. The Patriots did, and that’s why they are walking off with the LH trophy in our own stadium.
The first half was awful. Offensively, we called horrible plays, then capped it off with missed passes and uninspired running. Worse yet, we put the game in a situation where we had to hope our (ranked 31st) D would keep the New England Patriots in check. It was a miracle that we didn’t ripped apart 30+ points from thinking like that against Tom Brady and Bill Belichick. If we’d scored just one touchdown in the first quarter…But we didn’t.
Second half was a different story. After a slow start, you could tell that the defense was getting a handle on the Pats running game, which forced them to start throwing. When that happened, we were able to start using our pass rush to better effect. Our offense began to click and Sammy Watkins and Damien Williams got rolling, followed by Kelce. Okay, great we’re back in this. Took awhile but we finally wrestled the lead away from NE.
Cue the circus music and the zebra clown car. Took them forever to make any sort of decision on Dieter’s recovery (btw Hat’s off to Dieter for playing heads up and recovering that football, and running it in.) Wasn’t mad at the officials for reversing the call (on the replays you could see it sail past Edelmann’s arm) but was mad that they took forever at just stating it was a wrong call on the field (trying to cover for the ref.). So, okay, fine they made up their minds before February. Then comes the call on Chris Jones. On replay you could see his hand clearly didn’t hit Brady’s facemask. Didn’t get changed, despite the replay being shown in front of 78k fans at Arrowhead. So now the refs started playing the game of makeup call and makeup no-call.
Dee Ford’s offsides penalty sucked, was called correctly. Ford was offsides. He shouldn’t have done it. But in defense of Dee Ford, it was the AFC championship game, and he was looking for any edge to help the Chiefs win. Doesn’t make it right, but he’ll be taking flak to the point where he’ll get traded, and nothing will happen to the ref that completely blew the call on Chris Jones. If that had been called correctly, the Dee Ford play wouldn’t have happened!
Once the zebras settled down, and everyone got back to playing football, the Chiefs did put together a great drive with little time on the clock to take the Patriots into overtime. Then it boiled down to who got the coin toss, because while we’d stopped their run game, we really didn’t have a good answer for Gronk or Edelmann.
We didn’t go down without a fight, so we can hang our hats on that much.
01/21/2019 at 4:37 pm #1070961This may be an insignificant occurrence to some here. I digress.
Andy needs to learn to think outside the box.
Any little advantage can make or break a championship game.
Do you guys remember a couple years ago when Andy “iced” the opposing field goal kicker? It was 5 degrees out, the kicker missed the fg as we were calling time out.
He made the next one to win the game.
The kicker was already iced. Andy essentially gave him a practice kick.
Same thinking here….
Chiefs need a strong start to have a legit chance of beating Brady…
Chiefs win initial coin toss…
Chiefs defer…
Now, why would you ever give Brady the ball – on purpose – in a championship game?
Watching Brady march down the field in a long drive while Mahomes and company sit on the sideline freezing to death didn’t make sense to me. It shaped the entire first half imo.01/21/2019 at 7:15 pm #1070971@Eydugstr 347837 wrote:

Most critical in the 1st half was that 14-yard sack taken by Mahomes that took them out of FG range. That simply cannot happen. You have to get at least 3 points there & that was followed by the Patriots driving to a TD to make it 14-0. That was very pivotal.
All told, the Chiefs just shot themselves in the foot & blew the ball game. The Chiefs did just as much to lose this game as what the Pats did to beat them, if not more so.

Speaks has no talent. I dodnt like him when we picked him. Its not sutton its speaks. Also why use draft pick on olb 2 uears in a row? Im sure a cb or safety in round 2 would have helped more than speaks. I have never thought speaks had any talent. Hes a bust in my mind.
Also hitchens was a free agent bust. Ragland is no better.
Our draft needs is Cb, MLB them safety. Maybe mlb would be 1st. We need to stop the run. The rum is only thing that can beat us. If they can run and est up clock is the only thing that will stop Mahomes.
01/21/2019 at 9:54 pm #1070974Still Very ticked with Reid about this game
It’s the biggest game of the year and you don’t have your team ready at the start. JUST UNACCEPTABLE
2nd year in a row the Chiefs were a better team but get sent home. At least this time it wasn’t against the freaking Titans but UGH this one still sucks

Yeah the inexperience showed badly in the 1st half. Onky way to explain it. Its like the players didnt believe in themselves and was just going through the motions.
01/22/2019 at 3:48 pm #1070980Congrats on a great season. I think you guys have a bright future. Mahomes is the real deal. I think you need a better DC and Reid is not the long term answer for you guys, and I can’t put my finger on it as to why. I have been a Pats fan since 1978, and I know what it feels like to be on this side. We have such an advantage with BB and TB12, it’s almost unfair. In the NBA, talent and athleticism win out. Not so in the NFL. Scheme and coaching make a huge difference.
Again, congrats on a great season.

The thing about Reid after watching one of his teams for years is The bigger the game the more of a safe zone he goes to.
Sunday’s game was an example. Early in the game on one of our first 3 and out drives we had a 3rd and 1 we line up and run it right down the middle (who saw that coming you really showed them there Andy) and the defense was ready for it. Last year we actually came out attacking got a lead against the Titans then the safe zone began. Pretty much every pass for a screen or we just lined up in a run formation and ran it. I have been calling for a change for a while now. But it’s a moot point because I won’t be getting it. They always find someone else to blame.
