6-career-killing-facebook-mistakes: Personal Finance News from Yahoo! Finance

And I couldn’t help but think, as a job seeker, or employee…how fair is it for an employer to spy on you this way?

Sites like this are for expressing yourself…who cares what do you at home? It would almost be like your boss, or future boss spying on you, and it seems to me like an invasion of personal privacy to some extent.

    What do you guys think?

If you’re gonna put it out there, you can’t complain about privacy IMO. Nothing about Facebook is private and it isn’t advertised to be.

I would agree when you put something out there on the internet then you have the risk of someone you might not want to see it seeing it. Its just the way things are.

My point is why should your employer think bad things about you because of your personal life.

There are 2 lives, personal, and work. Work is for work and personal life stays out. It is ridiculous for employers to fire you, or not hire you cause you have a picture of yourself that is crude looking when your at HOME.

In theory I agree with you that personal and professional lives should remain separate, but employers or prospective employers tend to look at how the personal lives of their employees/applicants may reflect publicly on the company as a whole.

My thoughts with reply exactly. As well, realistically many personal lives affect professional lives, and one’s ability to perform on the job.

That said…I agree, in that privacy should be respected on the internet as well as any other place. Unfortunately privacy is invaded not only by employer’s, but by governement, and many other sources…including individuals invading one’s privacy.

Facebook does allow us to control privacy through account settings…so if one posts on public pages, rather than through their own profile page, or network of friends…they’re responsible for the reprecussions, if any. That is unless one of the friends violates confidentiality of course.
