I don’t get the ‘science’ behind it either, but it’s like former Miami Dolphin QB, Bob Griese once said “when you find a good fruit tree, you keep going back for the fruit”. Something like 17 or 18 QB prospects that the Chiefs drafted between Livingston and Mahomes (none of them from a Texas college) all washed out completely. Go figure.

When I think of Texas prospects coming to the Chiefs (although we didn’t draft him, and he’s not a QB)….the first name that comes to mind is Priest Holmes.

From here on out, there should be a page in a Chiefs front office manual that says “If a QB needs to be drafted…1) Examine how Patrick Mahomes was acquired 2) Repeat …”

With Mahomes it looks like KC shed itself of any curses when it comes to drafting QB’s. Really we needed the right front office and coaching situation to make it happen.

Not too long ago read Hank Stram’s “They’re Playing My Game”. At the end of the book, he talked about studying film on another team’s quarterback, but the film projector had been loaded reverse so it made right handed players look left handed. Jack Steadman walks into the film room, takes a look on the screen, and says “…I didn’t know he was left handed!!!…”

Stram, who liked to mess with people when the chance came up, looks over at Steadman and says “He’s amberdexterious. He can throw great with his right or left hand. Very talented.” Steadman just nods and walks out. At this point Stram didn’t have the heart to tell him about the reverse-loaded film or being too busy to re-load it correctly.

Sure enough, it’s the same Steadman that “helped out” in the ’83 draft by picking Todd Blackledge over Dan Marino.

Excellent story about Steadman. I hadn’t heard that one before.

As for Mahomes, while it is true that he was indeed the most talented QB prospect, both on the field & on paper, that they’ve ever drafted — the other 17 or 18 drafted between Livingston and Mahomes washed out completely with an overwhelming majority of them not even becoming serviceable backups.

As for the ’83 draft, it isn’t etched in stone that all those others that were drafted in round 1 of that draft, would have had the same success that they had elsewhere.

By the same token, it isn’t etched in stone that Mahomes would be enjoying the same success elsewhere, that he’s currently enjoying right now in KC. Anybody should be able to see that this was a case of the right QB (Mahomes) coming to the right team (Kansas City) at the right time.
