What those people failed to understand is that Derek Carr was a good QB prospect for the Raiders …. not for KC. I had spoken time and again of the Chiefs abysmal record when it came to drafting QB’s, with the only one having any sort of success being Mike Livingston. Livingston and Mahomes have one thing in common…..they both played their college ball in the state of Texas (Livingston was a product of SMU). These are only two QB’s the Chiefs ever drafted from that state & brought in to KC (Don Meredith was drafted by the AFL’s Dallas Texans in 1960, but he opted to play with NFL’s Dallas Cowboys and signed with them).
So with that said, if the Chiefs want to draft a QB in the future, then look to the state of Texas & no further. I believe Andy Dalton would have been a good choice in 2011, but Pioli was too fixated on Matt Cassell & like Matt said, didn’t seem to really want to build an Offense around whoever the QB was.
Not sure I get the science behind it, but it is weird that a lot of our better prospects came from Texas (The team itself came from Texas!).
Think Dalton would’ve suffered the same fate as Cassell; the O-line was pretty much ignored during the Herm Edwards/Pioli years. The idea of Dalton running Reid’s offense does make for a good “what if..” scenario, though.
