This rematch of the AFC Championship game will feature two of the best
in the NFL. Lamar Jackson is playing behind a rebuilt offensive line, which
could be a problem early in the season against a team that loves to blitz.
The Chiefs will be better this year on offense than a year ago, which will
show up here. Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs defense both get off to
good starts. Chiefs take it.

Kansas City Chiefs Team Preview

Coming off their third Super Bowl win in the last five years, the Kansas City Chiefs are riding an unbelievable high. With back-to-back victories under their belt, they’re hoping their offseason will help propel them to their third straight appearance, which takes place in New Orleans, Louisiana.

While this wasn’t the busiest offseason the Chiefs have had, it was a meaningful one. After placing the franchise tag on elite corner L’Jarius Sneed, the Chiefs traded him to the Titans for a 2025 third-round pick and a swap of 2024 seventh-round picks. The Chiefs are confident that Steve Spagnuolo will continue to draft and develop cornerbacks.

While the Sneed move was big, the Chiefs also made significant moves at the wide receiver position.

The Chiefs would trade up to pick 28 and grab Texas wide receiver Xavier Worthy. He’s expected to be an extraordinary compliment to Rashee Rice and the newly signed Marquise Brown, giving Patrick Mahomes a plethora of options to target. These speedy receivers will likely propel Mahomes’ aDOT (average distance of target) which was at 6.8 last season. Over the course of his career, Mahomes’ aDOT averaged 8.2. With the newfound speed on offense, we could see some of those vintage downfield shots Mahomes has been so good with throughout his seven-year career.

With a revamped receiver group and the consistency of Travis Kelce, the Chiefs are once again projected to top the AFC West. No other team in the league is as heavily favored to win their division as the Chiefs are at -230. This line implies a 69.7% chance of the Chiefs to win the division. Next in line would be the Chargers at +320, which is an implied chance of 23.8%. The Chiefs also have the best chance to win the AFC Conference at +300 (25%) and a three-peat as Super Bowl winners at +500 (16.6%).

5 things to watch as the Chiefs host the Ravens in NFL season opener
from ArrowheadPride.com

The AFC Championship rematch will be the first test in the Chiefs’ campaign for three-straight titles.

By Ron Kopp | @Ron_Kopp | Sep 4, 2024, 2:00pm CDT

For the second year in a row, the Kansas City Chiefs will open the NFL season with a pre-game nod to the previous year’s Super Bowl title. Banner night is Thursday evening; the Chiefs are hosting the Baltimore Ravens at Arrowhead Stadium — with kickoff set for 7:20 PM local time.

This game has so much more juice compared to the 2023 opener. Of course, defensive tackle Chris Jones and tight end Travis Kelce will actually be playing — but the biggest factor is the matchup. As opposed to a less-familiar NFC team in the Detroit Lions, the Ravens will bring a playoff intensity to a Kansas City crowd prepared to match it.

Baltimore will be fueled by revenge from last season’s 17-10 home loss to the Chiefs in the AFC Championship. Both defenses made life hard on the opposing offense; quarterback Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce overcame it for the necessary plays, but the Ravens are hungry to get a second crack at it.

That’s where we’ll start with five things to watch in the Chiefs’ matchup with the Ravens:

1. Staying ahead of the sticks

1975446554.jpg

During media availability on Sunday, Ravens’ linebacker Roquan Smith talked through the unit’s strategy against the Chiefs’ offense.

It may sound backward, but Smith refers to the importance of getting the Chiefs in obvious drop-back situations like third and long. In the AFC Championship, Kansas City was 1 of 8 on third downs needing 6 yards or more leading into the game-sealing completion to former wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling. On shorter third downs, the Chiefs moved the chains six of eight times.

The onus is on the Chiefs’ early-down play calling to be aggressive, keeping Baltimore on their heels. They have a stronger core of pass catchers to do that this year, and the payoff can be running back Isiah Pacheco, who has more room to make big plays himself.

In January, the lead back mustered only 2.9 yards per touch (rushes and receptions); the return of left guard Joe Thuney could help spring Pacheco on a handoff or screen play. Left tackle Kingsley Suamataia could also be an underrated upgrade here. The rookie will be most comfortable firing off on run plays and being used out in space.

It’s all about limiting opportunities for the dynamic Baltimore pass rush, headlined by Pro Bowl defensive tackle Nnamdi Madubuike. Avoiding obvious pass downs also protects the 21-year-old starter on Mahomes’ blind side.

2. Sound but physical play from Chiefs’ linebackers

2000656037.jpg

The physicality that Baltimore brings on offense is a staple under head coach John Harbaugh. That’s why All-Pro running back Derrick Henry was not a very surprising signing. The 30-year-old back, listed at 6 feet 2 inches tall and nearly 250 pounds, will be featured in a unit that led the NFL in rushing yards during the 2023 season.

The Chiefs’ defense held Baltimore to a season-low 81 rushing yards in the AFC Title game, but the Ravens only had 16 attempts. The run-game commitment could be stronger in this matchup, and the addition of Henry puts a lot more responsibility on the Chiefs’ linebackers to step up.

Linebackers Nick Bolton, Drue Tranquill, and Leo Chenal are all going to share the field often to match the Ravens’ heavier personnel, and they have to play balanced: it’s important to stop Henry in gaps before he gets a head of steam, but they also have to account for a fake handoff. Jackson can take advantage of a false step with his feet or arm.

3. Playing off Travis Kelce

A big factor in the Chiefs’ playoff run has been the The last time these teams played, Travis Kelce truly had an all-time performance. He caught all 11 passes thrown his way, totaling 116 yards and a score; that stat line is impressive without accounting for how incredible his highlights were.

Baltimore’s coverage focused more on the legendary tight end as the game went on, and that can be expected even more on Thursday. All-Pro safety Kyle Hamilton will naturally shadow Kelce as a strong safety and will be flanked by athletic linebackers like All-Pro Roquan Smith.

Without wide receiver Hollywood Brown, the Ravens may still heavily prioritize Kelce — forcing rookie receiver Xavier Worthy to prove he’s a legitimate threat before adjusting coverage.

Mahomes should give Worthy that chance. Baltimore will offer up plenty of one-deep safety looks with Hamilton up on Kelce, plus necessary attention on wide receiver Rashee Rice. Worthy — and wide receiver Justin Watson — should have space to operate deep with eyes on Mahomes’ favorite targets.

4. Matching up defensively on pass downs

usa_today_22395766.jpg
Geoff Burke-Imagn Images

The first coverage challenge without former Chiefs’ cornerback L’Jarius Sneed will be pretty straightforward. The Ravens’ top wide receiver is a blooming star in 2023 first-round pick Zay Flowers. His electric route running can be matched by Chiefs’ cornerback Trent McDuffie, who may move around the defensive formation to account for that.

That could result in a mix of third-year cornerbacks — Jaylen Watson, Joshua Williams, and Nazeeh Johnson — being relied on to cover the Ravens’ auxiliary options in three-receiver sets: wide receivers Rashod Bateman and Nelson Agholor.

Of course, Jackson likes to target tight end Mark Andrews in key situations. Safety Justin Reid will toughen him up at times, but the Chiefs will get creative with ways to take him away.

5. Setting up pass-rush pressure

1975454895.jpg

When the Chiefs force an obvious pass down, Chris Jones may have his pick of spots to overwhelm in the Baltimore offensive line.

The Ravens’ right tackle spot will either be manned by rookie Roger Rosengarten or sixth-year swing lineman Patrick Mekari; Baltimore traded last year’s starter Morgan Moses this offseason.

Jones could stay inside and wreck the interior as well. The Ravens turned over both guard positions since last season, and the duo has one career start between them. Aside from Jones, the versatility of the Chiefs’ pass rush could mess with an overturned offensive line.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs will spend a few minutes before their season opener against the Baltimore Ravens on Thursday night celebrating their latest Super Bowl triumph.

Former players will return to Arrowhead Stadium, and team owner Clark Hunt will help raise their latest championship banner high above the west end zone.

You can bet the Ravens won’t enjoy the show.

The Chiefs beat them in the AFC championship game just over seven months ago, denying Lamar Jackson and Co. their chance to play for the title. Instead, the Chiefs went on to beat San Francisco for their second straight championship and third in a five-year span.

“We’re not aiming for anybody, and I’m pretty sure they’re not aiming for us,” Ravens wide receiver Rashod Bateman said. “I mean, they beat us fair and square last year, and I feel like we’re just going to play football again Thursday night.”

Whatever the inspiration for Baltimore — a bit of revenge against the Chiefs, a trip to the Super Bowl at the end of the season, merely silencing one of the toughest crowds in the NFL on Thursday night — the driving force for the Chiefs is quite clear: They want to make history. No team has ever won three consecutive Super Bowls.

There are reasons to believe they can do it, too.

Kansas City returned almost its entire defense intact, one that finished second only to the Ravens in scoring last season, and its offense could be better than ever. The Chiefs drafted wide receiver Xavier Worthy for some big-play pop that was sorely missing, and Travis Kelce and the rest of the crew are back alongside Mahomes for another go-around.

They even figure to have Kelce’s girlfriend, pop superstar Taylor Swift, cheering from a suite once again.

They certainly want to get off to a better start, though. The Lions spoiled their banner-raising Week 1 celebration a year ago.

“Obviously, you want to play in the Super Bowl at the end of the year, but this is a big stage as well,” Mahomes said. “To be able to get that experience, play a great football team, I’m excited for these guys to get out there, and for the guys who haven’t been here to see what it’s like to be on that type of stage.”

The rematch between the AFC titans on Thursday night will lift the lid on the NFL regular season.

“Any game I play in, I feel like it’s a revenge game,” said Jackson, who earned his second NFL MVP award last season. “Anybody we’ve played, no matter if we’ve beat them or lost to them in previous years, I just want to win.”

When it comes to the Chiefs, he’s mostly been losing. The Ravens quarterback is 1-4 against counterpart Patrick Mahomes. That includes the 17-10 loss in January, when Kansas City held them to a lowly field goal over the final three quarters.

Honoring Joe and Jacoby

The Ravens will wear helmet decals honoring offensive line coach Joe D’Alessandris, who died Aug. 25 after being hospitalized with an “acute illness,” and former wide receiver Jacoby Jones, who died suddenly on July 14 in his native New Orleans.

“Hopefully those helmet tags of Jacoby Jones and Joe D’Alessandris help to serve as a reminder to all of us that it’s about the people,” Ravens coach John Harbaugh said. “It’s about the people in your life that you share this time on Earth with. Treat them right, cherish them, celebrate them, love them and remember them.”

Turnover up front

The Ravens lost three starters on the offensive line. And while they drafted tackle Roger Rosengarten in the second round, they made no other major additions. The pressure is on internal options such as guard Andrew Vorhees to hold up.

“I feel real good about those guys,” Ravens offensive coordinator Todd Monken said. “They’ve had a great offseason, great camp, so we’re real comfortable with them playing. Excited to see them play.”

Baltimore lost its defensive coordinator when Mike Macdonald became the head coach of the Seahawks. The Ravens gave the job to inside linebackers coach Zach Orr, who played three seasons in Baltimore before becoming a coach.

“Preseason was pretty smooth, but I know it’s going to be a lot different, just because there’s a lot different personnel groups. It’s more game-plan specific,” Orr said. “In the preseason, we just had our call sheet, and we just ran our plays.”

New faces, new places

The Chiefs are keenly aware that longtime Titans running back Derrick Henry is lining up in the Ravens backfield this year. The 250-pound bulldozer has dominated them in the past, averaging more than 111 yards rushing in four previous games.

“You add King Henry to the picture and a team that loves to run the ball is going to love to run the ball even more,” Chiefs linebacker Drue Tranquill said. “He’s a great player and adds a lot to their offense.”

Kickoff concerns

Despite three preseason games to try out the NFL’s new kickoff rules, nobody seems to know quite what to expect when the regular season begins. And that’s saying something given that Harbaugh began his NFL coaching career as a special teams coach under the Chiefs’ Andy Reid, whose own special teams are typically among the best in the league.

“I’m not sure what to anticipate or expect, but we’ll see how it all works out,” Reid said. “You’ve got two good special teams going against each other, plus John’s got a ton of experience there, so we’ll just see how it goes.”
